It's not often that listening to a cast album makes one think of Richard Strauss, but such is the genius of Scott Frankel and Michael Korie. The composer-lyricist team best known for the brilliant Grey Gardens is back with War Paint, the story of rival beauty moguls Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Here both story and emotion are thinner, but the music is gorgeous--Straussian in its elegiac beauty and bell-like notes--and worthy of its two stars, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, two of the most unique and exciting voices in musical theater. Like a golden-age Hollywood director 'managing' the two stars of a women's picture, the score has to find ways to manage its two leads, giving each an equal role. Ebersole gets an old-fashioned entrance--her Red Door spa staff sings breathlessly, 'She's coming, she's coming...,' bursting into a triumphant 'She's here' LuPone's entrance is less heralded but equally dramatic and separate,...

Ryan Murphy had it easy with his new FX series “Feud.” Bette Davis and Joan Crawford actually met face to face and, hating every minute of it, made a movie together, “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” Broadway’s Doug Wright, Scott Frankel, and Michael Korie have given themselves a much tougher task with their new feud musical, “War Paint,” which opened Thursday at the Nederlander Theatre. Cosmetics titans Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden set up shops near each other in Manhattan during the Depression, but never met during their long reign over the world of lipstick, facials, and nail polish.

Spellbound, the animated test movie from Amazon Studios features five original songs. We asked producer Kevin Bannerman (Anastasia, Ice Age) about the role the songs played and how they shaped the film.
How do songs help shape a movie?
It helps shape the movie’s tone. They can often show screenwriters a side of the character that hasn’t been explored. With a lyricist, the characters can develop a sense of humor and personality through their songs.
What song is the most pivotal in the movie?
Each song is unique in its own way because each individual song has its own special reason for being. “New Breeze Blowing” is important because it takes the relationship between Lottie and Bastien to new heights (pun intended). But “The Road to Riches” is just as important for several reasons: it gives us an insight into Horace, it allows Lottie and Horace to have...

X Factor judge joins team reworking Harvey Weinstein musical, alongside playwright James Graham and director Diane Paulus
Singer-songwriter Gary Barlow has signed up to co-write the score for Harvey Weinstein's Finding Neverland musical, which still has its sights set on the West End, despite receiving mixed reviews on its first outing last year.
The musical, based on the film of the same name, focuses on the personal life of Peter Pan author Jm Barrie, and received its world premiere at the Leicester Curve in October 2012.
Producer Weinstein had reportedly hoped to transfer the production into the West End this year. But he has now brought a host of new personnel to make changes to the musical and its production. Maybe what I'm about to say I'm only saying because I've been away too long (I'm back today from a three-month leave), but: Dear God, is the American musical in trouble or something? Worse still: Is it possible that a doggedly overwrought, diligently misconceived, nobly self-nullifying mini-opus like Far From Heaven is actually doing more damage to the form than slapdash commercial pap does? Pop trash doesn't have capability's power to repel, after all. It takes megatalents the size of Michael Greif, Scott Frankel, Michael Korie, and Richard Greenberg — working with a flawless cast and what appears to be near-perfect musical source material, filmmaker Todd Haynes's clever-but-never-too-clever, surprisingly heartfelt deconstruction of the Douglas Sirk weepie — to create a vacuum of these handsome dimensions, where all the signature gestures, musical and dramaturgical, serve only as you-are-here guidestars to the show's vast shallows. "God, I hate musicals," spat my seatmate, a...

New York – Composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie demonstrated their refined talent for shaping challenging material into emotionally resonant musical theater with Grey Gardens in 2006. With help from playwright Richard Greenberg, the same team delivers a flawed but compelling work of delicate nuances and lingering rewards in Far From Heaven. While the Playwrights Horizons stage seems too confining for the show’s lush flights of feeling and cinematic flourishes, this is an intelligent, ambitious piece that deserves a future life. The musical allows Kelli O’Hara to create a penetrating character study of a woman who has built her adult

Last week, speaking on Front Row on Radio 4, the director of the National theatre, Nicholas Hytner, called on our government to reinstate the money it has cut from the budgets of out-of-London theatres.
His argument gains clout with this world premiere in Leicester of the musical about Jm Barrie's creation of Peter Pan and based on the 2004 Miramax film starring Johnny Depp. The show is produced by Harvey Weinstein, co-founder of Miramax and the force behind numerous award-winning stage and screen hits including The Producers and The King's Speech. The news that Miramax co-founder Harvey Weinstein was to make the leap into theatrical production with a musical version of his 2004 movie aroused a flurry of speculation: that Gwyneth Paltrow might be in it (she isn't); that Bono and the Edge would be paying a visit (they have). It's certainly a coup for the Curve to be the focus for such an event: though what actually emerges is an industriously staged, if slightly anaemic, adaptation of a flawed and semi-imagined biopic.

It takes for granted that Barrie's cuckoo-like inveiglement into the Llewelyn Davies family was more of a blessing than a curse. The boys' mother, Sylvia, is conveniently introduced as a widow (in fact,...

The Weinstein Company's show, Finding Neverland, is based on their 2004 film of the same name starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and tells the story of how Jm Barrie's friendship with a young family inspired Peter Pan. It will be directed by Rob Ashford, whose last West End musical was Shrek, and whose Donmar theatre production of Anna Christie was acclaimed this year. British actor Julian Ovenden is set to play Barrie.

The New York Observer says The Weinsteins, Bob and Harvey, are planning a Broadway musical version of the 2004 Miramax Film "Finding Neverland," which originally starred Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. Quoth the Observer:
"Screen queen Peggy Siegal, who typically arranges lavish movie premieres for the Weinstein Company and other studios, recently sent out a note to would-be investors inviting them to a special reading of the musical, which features music by Scott Frankel and lyrics by Michael Korie, the team behind "Grey Gardens."
The Nyo also reports that the Weinsteins are developing Broadway musical versions of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Chocolat," and "Cinema Paradiso." Sounds like they're diving into the world of weird musical adaptations, but in reality Harvey Weinstein's been building up a large theatrical producing resume for years. His Ibdb page is already formidable, and his credits already include musical versions of "9 to 5," "Billy Elliott," "The Color Purple,...

Audiences can expect to see more film's being turned into Broadway musicals thanks to Bob and Harvey Weinstein. According to a report from The New York Observer, they are actively developing musicals based upon Finding Neverland, Chocolat, Cinema Paradiso and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Seeing as how Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark has turned out, I am surprised that they are even consiering this idea. Finding Neverland has made the most progress so far, with music having already been written by Grey Gardens team Scott Frankel and Michael Korie and investors lining up. The muiscal is based on the 2004 film from director Marc Forster that starred Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie, the man who created Peter Pan.
The New York Observer learned of the developments after Hollywood premiere party planner, Peggy Siegal sent out an invitation to potential investors to hear a reading of the Finding Neverland, including the songs.

The furthest along is Finding Neverland, which already has music written by Grey Gardens team Scott Frankel and Michael Korie and investors lining up. The 2004 film was directed by Marc Forster and starred Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie, the man who created Peter Pan. Read more after the break.
