You know what they say: famous couples who help each other find mansions together, stay together. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spent their first Christmas with 7-month-old son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in Canada this year, opting to spend the holiday at a private location with the Duchess' mother, Doria Ragland, instead of participating in Queen Elizabeth II's holiday celebrations. But how did they choose where to stay? As it turns out, Smash alum Katharine McPhee—who went to school with Meghan in Los Angeles when they were teens—had her husband David Foster help them find the luxurious Canadian...

Dimension Films has found a writer for its reboot of Short Circuit. Variety reports that Matt Lieberman has been hired to write a script that will be directed by Tim Hill (Hop). All details are being kept under wrap, but the film will be a reimagining of the 1986 family film.
The original film followed "Johnny Five, an experimental military robot that develops intelligence and self-awareness after being struck by lightning. With the help of a troubled young boy, the robot tries to evade capture and convince his creator that he's truly alive."
The project has been in the works since 2009, when Dimension optioned remake rights. When Hill signed on to direct in August, the project gained momentum. David Foster, who produced the original, is producing along with Ryan E. Heppe, John Hyde, and Brian Manis. Production is slated to begin at the end of the year, for a scheduled release next summer.

Dimension Films has been tried to remake "Short Circuit" since 2008. Then in August, the studio hired "Alvin and the Chipmunks" director Tim Hill to direct from a script by Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken"), who did a re-write of the SS Wilson and Brent Maddock script. Now comes word that Dimension is once again not happy with the story of the remake and has brought on Matt Lieberman to do another re-write. Lieberman is responsible for the direct-to-video sequel "Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief," a fourth installment in the franchise. And regarding the plan for "Short Circuit," producer David Foster previously said: "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals." Dimension Films have announced the hiring of screenwriter Matt Lieberman to pen a remake of the 1986 cult favorite Short Circuit. An Honors film grad from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Lieberman wrote a draft of the Doctor Dolittle sequel Doctor Dolittle: First Dog, and another couple projects that have never gone into production, including Disney's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. He's a graduate of the Disney screenwriting program, and has uncredited worked on a bunch of the Disney live-action film projects from the past few years. Despite my jab headline, Lieberman seems like an up-and-comer. He is set to work closely with director Tim Hill (Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks). The press release says that "details of the new take are currently being kept under wraps" but its pretty obvious that they are aiming for something much tamer than the original film. Probably best known as Mr. Eko from Lost, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is a British-Nigerian actor with decades of memorable work. None of that could have prepared him for the terror of The Thing.

Tim Hill (Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks) has signed on to direct a reboot of Short Circuit for Dimension Films Deadline reports. The 1986 story as we all remember is about an an experimental robot manufactured to be a weapon until a lightning strike fills it with intelligence. It runs away and befriends a family. Normal.
Hill is being brought in to oversee a fresh take on the script that was written back in 2009, David Foster, who produced the original, is producing the reboot.
So what’s next? A Mac and Me remake? I’ll take it. Will Steve Guttenberg return? If the Stonecutters have anything to say about it he will. Will Number 5 be CGI? Most definitely.

Back in 2008, Dimension Films acquired the remake rights to "Short Circuit" and hired original "Short Circuit" writers SS Wilson and Brent Maddock to pen the script. Then Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken") was brought on to do a re-write. "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals," said producer David Foster, adding that the robot's look won't change. And then finally in 2009, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" director Steve Carr was signed to helm. In 2008 Dimension Films picked up the rights to remake [1] the mid-'80s robot film Short Circuit, but as is often the case with projects like these, actually getting the picture to a position that is ready to shoot is taking some time. Now there's a new director: Tim Hill, who will also oversee the creation of a new script. Deadline [2] has the news on the hire, noting that Tim Hill is the director of this year's Easter Bunny picture Hop, as well as of Alvin and the Chipmunks. If that sounds dodgy, consider that the last director [3] on the project was Steve Carr, who made Paul Blart: Mall Cop, as well as Next Friday, Dr. Doolittle 2 and Daddy Day Care. If nothing else, the sequence of those two hires makes the studio's intent pretty clear: the goal is something very mainstream, and very easily digestible. Original Short Circuit creators S.

Sneak Peek the new poster supporting Universal's upcoming Toronto-lensed feature remake "The Thing".
The production lensed for 4 months @ Pinewood Studios Toronto.
The science-fiction horror thriller, described by the studio as a 'prelude' to director John Carpenter's feature "The Thing" (1982), follows the discovery of an extraterrestrial organism and ship buried deep in Antarctica.
The main character, a paleontologist played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, fights for survival, along with her scientific crew, when the 'shape-shifter' alien is discovered to have the ability to replicate other creatures (including humans).
Carpenter's "The Thing" adapted the 1938 "Astounding Magazine" 'novella' "Who Goes There", by author John W. Campbell Jr.
The short story was also the basis of the 1951 film "The Thing From Another World" from producer Howard Hawks.
Premise of Campbell's original story focused on a group of scientific researchers, isolated in Antarctica, that discover an alien spaceship buried in the ice.

Universal Pictures, Toronto-lensed horror feature "The Thing", produced by J. Miles Dale and directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is scheduled for a reshoot January 21- 29 in Toronto.
The film is a prequel to director John Carpenter's 1982 feature, following a 4 month shoot in 2010 @ Toronto's Pinewood Studios.
"...Antarctica. An extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists.
"The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman.
"In the thriller 'The Thing', paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

As Sneak Peek first reported January 2009, a prequel to director John Carpenter's 1981 horror feature "The Thing" is now prepping for a production start in Toronto.
Shooting on the Universal monster feature begins in March through to June, set on the Norweigan Antarctic base that first encounters a shape-shifting 'thing' from another world.
Director is Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., from a screenplay by Eric "A Nightmare On Elm Street" Heisserer and Ronald D. "Battlestar Galactica" Moore.
Carpenter's "The Thing" adapted the 1938 "Astounding Magazine" 'novella' "Who Goes There", by author John W. Campbell Jr.
The short story was also the basis of the 1951 film "The Thing From Another World" from producer Howard Hawks.
Premise of the original story follows a group of scientific researchers, isolated in Antarctica, that discover an alien spaceship buried in the ice. The men unwittingly recover the alien pilot that can assume the shape, memories and personality of any living creature.

Considering several, if not most, movie bloggers are all of the same generation I am assuming a lot are like me and grew up watching the 1986 sci-fi classic Short Circuit. However, while I enjoyed the film, I don't think I will be falling in line and getting all that upset about the remake Dimension Films is putting together.
It was announced back in June that Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken") would be scripting the film as original producer David Foster told Variety, "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals."
It seems Milano did his job as Variety now informs us Steve Carr, director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, will direct the new Short Circuit for the studio, but there is no word on when production will begin.

If it worked for Star Trek, why not for T.J. Hooker? The man that created the hour-long cop show that was a staple on ABC's line-up in the early 1980s wants to bring the L.A. beat street cop to the big screen, but where the original Hooker was an action-drama the movie is being envisioned as an action-comedy. With a name like "Hooker" that makes sense, donnit?
Rick Husky was the creator of T.J. Hooker and he's attached as a producer on the film along with David Foster and Ryan Heppe. Director Chuck Russell of The Scorpion King and The Mask fame is working out a contract that would see him call action on the set of the film while screenwriters Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson (the Tremors series, Wild Wild West) will write the story. Variety found out that Maddock and Wilson's take on the movie Hooker will...

No, were not referring to any forms of prostitution in here but the early 1980’s series T.J. Hooker. Starring William Shatner and Heather Locklear, the popular cop drama is getting itself revamped on the big screen. Director Chuck Russell (The Scorpion King) is being tracked down to take part of the adaptation, joining the creator of the series Rick Husky who will be producing.
Conjuring up the script is scribes Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson who both at the moment are writing up the remake of 1986 movie, Short Circuit. Joined along with David Foster and Ryan Heppe producing, this quartet of people have been attached to the hip all the way to Tremors. No word yet on who is to be casted in any of the roles.

Showing that no television property is immune from being remade for the big screen, the 80s police drama "T.J. Dimension Films has hired a new writer to plug away at a remake of 1986’s Short Circuit. Stepping up to the screenwriting table is Dan Milano, creator of the show “Greg the Bunny” and a writer for the Emmy Award-winning series “Robot Chicken.”
The original told the story of Johnny Five, a robot built by the military to be a weapon, but it gained a personality after it was struck by lightning. Johnny Five is alive.
When the reboot was announced in April 2008, the original writers, Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson had been hired to write Johnny Five’s return to the screen. It looks like Bob Weinstein was looking for a different take on the character now. It’s a good replacement with talent, but can it save this idea? Number 5 Is Alive! I don't know what rock I've been hiding under, but evidently I've missed knowing about the Short Circuit remake until just now. And frankly, my life is better. Then came the news that "Robot Chicken" writer and "Greg the Bunny" co-creator Dan Milano is writing the script for Johnny 5's comeback to the screen. According to Variety, the writer was approached by Dimension Films to pen the remake of the 1986 film. In case you're not familiar, Short Circuit revolved around an armored robot under the control of the military being struck by lightning, therefore developing free will and a personality of his own (obviously). He then spent the remainder of 90 minutes reading books quickly, dancing with Ally Sheedy, and managing to outwit the U.S. Armed Forces. Oh, and Steve Guttenberg was along for the ride. As was Fisher Stevens playing one of the most blatantly racist characters I can think of. Fuck...

If the Mayan calender is correct and the world does end in 2012, it'll be ok because we will have gotten all of our '80s remakes by then! Whew. Fresh on the heels of Total Recall getting its writer, the Oscar nominated Taraji P. Henson joining The Karate Kid, and Jonah Hill's 21 Jump Street plans comes an update on the Short Circuit remake.
According to Variety, Dan Milano of Robot Chicken and Greg the Bunny fame has been recruited to pen the remake for Dimension Films, replacing original writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. He plans to give it a"subversive edge" similar to his Adult Swim work. I don’t remember seeing any poo in “Short Circuit,” do you? That may change for the remake, given the latest news to emerge on it. “Greg the Bunny” creator and “Robot Chicken” writer Dan Milano has been brought in to pen the remake’s script for Dimension Films, according to a report in Variety.
For those of you who don’t remember — or who have just flat-out never seen it — the original “Short Circuit” dropped in 1986 as a family-friendly comedy about robots. One robot, really. Johnny Five, a military construct which becomes self-aware after being struck by lightning. Not self-aware in the Skynet way of course; it’s more “Look at me! I’m alive! Sweet! Please don’t kill me!” If only he’d realized that thing on his shoulder is a big, nasty laser….
But I digress. Milano is a strange choice for reviving such a family friendly movie.

Dimension Films has signed Dan Milano to write the script for the remake of "Short Circuit."
