In an interview with Vanity Fair, Annie Mumolo, co-writer of Bridesmaids and Bad Moms star, reveals that she’s working on an adaptation of Patrick Dennis’ 1955 novel Auntie Mame for the very Auntie Mame-ish Tilda Swinton.
The book chronicles the comic adventures of a young boy living with his eccentric (read: free-thinking and independent) aunt after his father dies. In 1958, Warner Brothers released a film adaptation that starred Rosalind Russell as the titular heroine. Russell was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for her performance. The film went on to become the highest-grossing U.S. film the following year because viewers found no end to the hilarity of a woman making her own decisions every day.
Mumolo, who was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar for Bridesmaids and also has a writing credit on David O. Russell’s Joy, said she became involved with the ...

Tilda Swinton has become attached to a remake of Rosalind Russell's 1958 Oscar nominated comedy "Auntie Mame" which "Bridesmaids" and "Bad Moms" scribe Annie Mumolo is penning.
The original is based on Patrick Dennis' 1955 novel about an orphaned boy who is placed in the care of his flamboyant, exuberant aunt who hosts frequent parties with eclectic bohemian guests. Speaking with Vanity Fair, Mumolo says:
"She [Swinton] asked me, 'Have you read Auntie Mame?'. I said, 'No, I haven't read the book but I've seen the other version of it made into a film version in the 50s.' She said, 'Would you take a look at it? I want to see if you are interested in writing a modern-day adaptation.' I said yes, because you say yes to Tilda Swinton when she asks if you want to do something.

An Evanston, Illinois, production of the classic musical “Mame” is seeking young male talent to audition for young Patrick Dennis, who’s left in the care of his eccentric Auntie Mame after his father’s death. The ideal candidate will be aged 9–14, sing as a soprano, and be a “bright, curious, precocious, adorable young boy.” The musical, perhaps known best for Lucille Ball’s film interpretation of the title role, is set in New York City during the Great Depression and World War II. Mame Dennis is a bohemian who lives by the motto, “Life is a banquet and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death.” Her life of luxury is taken for a spin with the arrival of her nephew, and together, they navigate the Depression in the big city in a series of songs and adventures. Casting director Kyle Dougan of Light Opera Works is holding...

Almost since the series began in 1994, Encores! has sparked arguments about what kinds of old musicals it should be reviving. If they’re still commercially viable, as Chicago clearly was, do they deserve the reconstructive effort? If they’re artistically minor but historically important, will they interest enough people to fill City Center? And if they’re in between, aren’t they too in-between? Myself, I haven’t cared what shows Encores! does as long as it does them justice. I enjoy understanding what even a creaky old operetta might have sounded like and meant in its time. Yet with Little Me, the first show of its twenty-first season, Encores! may finally have met a musical that doesn’t suit the mission. It’s neither great nor awful, revivable nor irredeemable. In some ways it’s barely a musical at all. That is, it’s barely a book musical — even...

Darkling Presented at Irt, July 5 and 6, 2013
It is 1987 and Trinity, a gnarled-toothed thirteen-year old Goth Girl, will go through almost as many hilarious, overwrought, and absurd trials and adventures as Bell Poitrine in Patrick Dennis's mock-autobiography Little Me experienced in a lifetime -- but with one important difference: Trinity will do it all in one speedy hour. In Darkling, as written and performed by the consummate performance artist, Kim Katzberg, the Trinity character justly earns our sympathy and, through all the hilarity, ultimately grows up.
As demonstrated in her previous work, Penetrating the Space (reviewed herein when it was presented in repertory as part of the Cheerful Insanity show in 2011), Ms. Katzberg in Darkling again transforms herself into various characters. Such a magnitude of skill and theatrical dexterity prompts me to dub her the Meryl Streep of performance artists. In the course of Darkling, as Ms. Katzberg dons the...

When you.ve established a longstanding relationship with an actress like Tilda Swinton, you make sure to keep it going and that.s exactly what Luca Guadagnino plans to do. According to Variety, while promoting their film I Am Love at the Venice Film Festival the duo announced their desire to make a modern version of Auntie Mame. The 1955 novel by Patrick Dennis was adapted for Broadway in 1957 then for film in 1958. There was another cycle of Broadway and cinema reproductions resulting in the 1966 musical Mame starring Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur and subsequent film starring Arthur, Lucille Ball and Robert Preston in 1974. Guadagnino said his version of Auntie Mame would be a "rock-n-roll, super funny, super mainstream movie. and would tell the story of an orphaned boy growing up with his eccentric aunt in the present day. Guadagnino also added, .This is an Sos for Warner Bros. to give...

While promoting their new film "I Am Love" at the Venice Film Festival, actress-producer Tilda Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino announced plans to collaborate again on a remake of "Auntie Mame," previously reworked as the musical "Mame," Variety reports. The duo has no legitimate rights to the original novel by Patrick Dennis nor either film version; they're merely using this opportunity to send out an "Sos" to Warner Bros. of their intentions to remake the film with Swinton as the titular eccentric who takes in her orphaned nephew.
While it's unclear if their plan is to make another musical version of the story, Guadagnino does say it will be a "rock-n-roll, super funny, super mainstream movie," implying at least a soundtrack-heavy project. Fans of the original film would certainly be more okay with something supplanting the remake, with its forgettable vocal performance by Lucille Ball -- though Bea Arthur devotees may protest.
