The Sounds of 2021 mix of movie soundtracks comes in at just over two hours: a synergy of cerebral, graceful, paranoid, turbulent, and wondrous sounds from across all genres, merged to tell its own sonic story. The focus is mainly Hollywood and American indie movies, with a few excursions to Ethiopia, Chile, Japan, France, United Kingdom, Italy, and Sweden. My moviegoing practices became ever more erratic this year after a move to a new country, on-off rule changes in cinemas, and a tendency to have cinematic interests in something specific that was not part of the current slate. That being said, there was excitement in the air when it came to new cinema that felt more powerful this year than last and I hope that grows. New work from Mica Levi, Ludovico Einaudi, and a country soundtrack from Clint Eastwood’s latest film are a few of the exciting moments from...

Abel Ferrara will be awarded the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the Venice Film Festival.
Ferrara, who is based in Rome these days, will be handed the award honoring an artist’s original mark on contemporary cinema during a ceremony on Sept. 5 prior to the screening of his latest doc titled “Sportin’ Life.” The doc is described in a Venice statement as an “intimate and lush” look at his own life.
It’s Ferrara’s “world refracted through his art – music, filmmaking, his collaborators and inspirations… his partner Cristina Chiriac and their daughter Anna, their life in the eternal city, Roma… as the corona virus descends and paralyses the world,” the statement said.
“Sportin’ Life,” which is screening out-of-competition and runs 65 minutes, features turns by Abel Ferrara, Willem Dafoe, Cristina Chiriac, Anna Ferrara, Paul Hipp, and Joe Delia.

Watch out – a bloodsucking fiend is stalking the highways and by-ways of lower Manhattan… and she has a PhD! Abel Ferrara’s vampire mini-epic puts Lili Taylor through an ordeal that’s harrowing, transformational and either profound or pretentious depending on how you roll with existential philosophy. We acknowledge that Ferrara is a good judge of actor-flesh: sharing in the theory-speak and blood-soaked grue are Christopher Walken, Annabella Sciorra, Edie Falco, and Kathryn Erbe.

For this final week of home media releases, June is closing things out on a strong note, as we have plenty of horror and sci-fi offerings to get excited about. For those who may have missed it during its theatrical run earlier this year, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless arrives on both formats (and is absolutely worth your time).
Arrow Video is keeping busy with a pair of Special Edition releases–The Addiction and Vigil–and Vinegar Syndrome is serving up a double dose of cult filmmaking with their multi-format presentations for Grave Robbers and their Blood Theatre/The Visitants double feature. Abel Ferrara’s The Addiction (1995) will be available on Blu-ray June 26th From Arrow Video
The mid-nineties were a fertile period for the vampire movie. Big-name stars such as Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy flocked to genre, as did high-caliber filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, veterans Wes Craven and John Landis, independents Michael Almereyda and Jeffrey Arsenault, and up-and-comers Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro. Amid the fangs and crucifixes, Abel Ferrara reunited with his King of New York star Christopher Walken for The Addiction, a distinctly personal take on creatures of the night.
Philosophy student Kathleen is dragged into an alleyway on her way home from class by Casanova and bitten on the neck. She quickly falls ill but realises this isn t any ordinary disease when she develops an aversion to daylight and a thirst for human blood…

It’s icky, drippy and grindingly gross — and will make your forehead itch — but Abel Ferrara’s Bowery-set dime store horror opus has withstood the test of time. It’s a decent enough psychodrama, if one can set aside all the psychological-philosophical booshwah that’s leaked into horror criticism. Oops, Savant’s guilty of that too.

Zoë Tamerlis has a habit for revenge in Ms. 45.
From the inimitably ferocious New York filmmaker Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, 4:44 Last Day on Earth) comes his notorious 1981 crime thriller Ms. 45.

“Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm (Nasdaq: Cidm), will bring two of its recent theatrical success stories to Blu-ray and DVD in restored and remastered editions: the wildly ambitious and neglected sci-fi/horror epic The Visitor and Ms. 45, legendary director Abel Ferrara’s gritty, gore-filled New York revenge thriller. The films will arrive, respectively, on March 4 and on March 25, 2014, with SRPs of $29.95 for Blu-ray and $27.95 for DVD. They come packed with bonus material in both formats.

Arrow Films is pleased to announce that the highly anticipated deluxe Blu-ray, DVD & Steelbook editions of Abel Ferrara’s cult gangster classic King Of New York, will be released in the UK on Monday June 25th.
We have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away!
Taking influence from the hard-edged crime capers of the 1930’s, King Of New York stars Christopher Walken in electric form as the snakelike mob boss Frank White. Originally released in September 1990, on the same day as Goodfellas, King Of New York is widely regarded as one of the most stylish and visually stunning movies of the decade.
Ferrara perfectly captures New York’s gritty underbelly. The near non-stop action showcases the vast contrasts of a city after the sun goes down; from the luxury Penthouses and restaurants of Manhattan, to crack dens, apartment blocks, and the rattling carriages of the New York subway.

He plays a detective on TV, but in real life he's a vampire. I'm talking about Richard Belzer, who plays acerbic Detective John Munch on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." We've learned exclusively that he's just wrapped a (yes!) very funny music video for "The Vampire Song," which he wrote with composer Joe Delia. "The Real Housewives of New Jersey's" Danielle Staub returns in Season 2 of the Bravo reality series on May 3, shortly before the release of her autobiography, "The Naked Truth," on May 25. But ex-husband Kevin Maher says he has had enough of her lies about him and wants to set the record straight now by challenging Staub to take a lie detector test.
"She went through the first season of the television show just lying with impunity," Maher tells Zap2it exclusively. "Now, she's going to be caught. I'm not going to spare any expense to bring this woman to justice."
Maher was the subject and coauthor of the 1996 book "Cop Without a Badge," about his career as a confidential informant for various police departments, the FBI and the DEA. The book included details of his brief marriage to Staub and claimed she was a stripper, a paid escort and a cocaine user.
