Exclusive: Matt Lanter (Jupiter’s Legacy) and newcomer Sophia Esperanza have joined Prime Video’s Motorheads cast in recurring roles, Deadline has learned exclusively.
From writer-showrunner John A. Norris, Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is the adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of automobiles. And while some characters will be navigating the hierarchy and rules of high school, others will be racing from a dark past.
The series also includes previously announced stars Ryan Phillippe, Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, Uriah Shelton, Drake Rodger, Johnna Dias-Watson, Josh Macqueen and Mia Healey.
Lanter will portray Darren, a wealthy and powerful father of 17-year-old Harris (Macqueen), who, like his dad, is a serious street racer.

Wilson Fisk very much ascribes to the "Speak softly and carry a big stick" philosophy. Except, the crime boss of Hell's Kitchen doesn't need a big stick -- he's got himself. Whether on the pages of a comic book or the screen, the man they call Kingpin always towers over everyone around him. "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," once again demonstrating that animation is uniquely equipped for the superhero genre, exaggerates the proportion of Fisk's shoulders to his head to an absurd degree to literalize the idea of a man who dominates any room he enters. Meanwhile, the late, great Michael Clarke Duncan had little trouble physically embodying the character in the 2003 "Daredevil" movie, being a real-life Jack Reacher at six-foot-five and over 300 pounds.
Vincent D'Onofrio, on the other hand, had a trickier task, having to capture not just Fisk's daunting physical stature but also his vulnerable personality in Netflix's "Daredevil" series.

"Spartacus: House of Ashur",from "Spartacus" creator Steven S. DeKnight, stars Nick Tarabay, reprising the role of gladiator 'Ashur’, in a new 10-episode live-action drama series, despite the character being killed off in “Spartacus: Vengeance”, airing in 2024 on Starz:
"...'Spartacus: House of Ashur' will be a history-bending, erotic, thrilling, roller-coaster experience…
‘…that builds on everything that made the original series a colossal hit.
"The series poses the question: what if 'Ashur', played by fan favorite Nick Tarabay, hadn't died on 'Mount Vesuvius' at the end of 'Spartacus: Vengeance'?
"And what if he had been gifted the gladiator school once owned by 'Batiatus' in return for aiding the 'Romans' in killing 'Spartacus' and putting an end to the slave rebellion?..."

I often lambast the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the "same old, same old" feeling of its movies and television — so I feel a little hypocritical calling the revival series "Daredevil: Born Again" my most anticipated Marvel project.
"Daredevil" ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2015-2018, but was canceled afterward. Like its sister shows, it was a casualty of Marvel and Netflix decoupling from their creative partnership. However, since it was the most consistently acclaimed of the Marvel/Netflix shows and the title character has the biggest built-in audience, "Daredevil" will be born again on Disney+.
As for why I'm excited? "Daredevil" was counterprogramming to the quippy fluff of the MCU movies, with a darker tone and more violence. Plus, what can I say, I'm a fan of the character. If you aren't familiar, Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer blessed with enhanced senses to compensate. At night, he patrols...

Some of the campiest WB teen soaps have taken inspiration from classic films, and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is no exception. The characters in this supernatural high school series rival the complexity of great cinematic figures from the films of acclaimed directors, and it's no accident — some of them were inspired by those very sources. In fact, one of Stanley Kubrick's most famous and terrifying films, "The Shining," had a big influence on one of the most formidable villains in "Buffy."
Jack Nicholson's leading performance in the 1980 psycho-thriller is not among the 12 in his career to bring him Academy Award recognition, and yet it remains one of his most celebrated. His role as the violent off-season inn-keeper of a remote haunted hotel has provided source material for a great many writers and actors alike, including Clare Kramer, who played the hell god Glorificus in "Buffy."

When Charlie Cox reprises Matt Murdock for the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, it will mark a welcome return. While Cox has played the character in small bits in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Born Again will no doubt be the proper return that fans want. But, like fans, Charlie Cox wasn’t so sure he would ever play Murdock / Daredevil ever again, figuring his stint ended when his namesake Netflix series did.
Appearing recently at Wales Comic Con (via GamesRadar), Charlie Cox said he assumed that once Daredevil was canceled, that was it. “I really thought that ship had sailed, you know? I thought it was over…It had been a couple of years since [Netflix’s Daredevil had been canceled]. What I didn’t know was there was an embargo on that. After news broke of Daredevil: Born Again's creative overhaul, series star Vincent D'Onofrio is speaking out.
It was reported earlier this week that Disney and Marvel had let go of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman.
The decision reportedly came after Disney execs screened completed episodes of the series and decided that the show wasn't working in its current form.
D'Onofrio, who is reprising the role of Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk in the series, took to social media to respond to a fan who said the actor's posts celebrating the series had "aged poorly."
"Unless you really know what's going there's a chance you could be wrong about this statement," he responded.
"We are going to bring forward the best series we can. One we can be proud of. Have some trust my friend, trust."

Vincent D’Onofrio says the reports about Marvel’s “Daredevil: Born Again” undergoing a creative overhaul are not actually a big deal, as such changes are common in the film and television industry. Will Daredevil: Born Again even see the light of day?
The latest update on the Disney+ series doesn't instill hope that any of the episodes will make it on the air.
According to Variety, head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman have been let go from the series.
Less than half of the series' 18-episode order was shot before the SAG-AFTRA strike, and the remaining directors have also been let go.
The aim, Variety reports, is to take the series in a new creative direction, which means some of the filmed footage will be left on the cutting room floor.
It's interesting to hear that the show hasn't gotten off the ground running because the recent press hasn't been positive.
As you'll recall, Daredevil initially aired on Netflix with Charlie Cox playing the titular superhero.

With a global box office haul of over $400 million, Pacific Rim was bound for a sequel – we did get one, just not with Guillermo del Toro as director. But it wasn’t for a lack of trying but rather a lack of a paycheck – not to del Toro but sound stages.
As Guillermo del Toro explained to Collider, a missed payment and an obligation to another film caused the director to bow out of helming a Pacific Rim sequel. “We were getting ready to do it, it was different from the first, but it had a continuation of many of the things that I was trying to do. Then what happened is—I mean, this is why life’s crazy, right?—they had to give a deposit for the stages at 5pm or we would lose the stages in Toronto for many months. So, I said, “Don’t forget we’re gonna lose the stages,...

Guillermo del Toro is looking back and reflecting on the scrapped Star Wars movie he was developing that would’ve centered around Jabba the Hutt.
“We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy,” Del Toro said in an interview with Collider. “We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away. Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. We learned.'”
He continued, “You can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there’s something to be learned from it. So, you know, I trust the universe, I do. When something doesn’t happen, I go, ‘Why?’ I...

Guillermo del Toro revealed he had to drop out of directing the sequel to his 2013 kaiju blockbuster “Pacific Rim” due to scheduling conflicts with “The Shape of Water.”
The director walked away from 2018’s “Pacific Rim Uprising” as a result of significant delays caused by a producer’s late payment on Toronto soundstages, Del Toro revealed to Collider in a recent interview.
“We were getting ready to do it, it was different from the first, but it had a continuation of many of the things that I was trying to do. Then what happened is — I mean, this is why life’s crazy, right? — they had to give a deposit for the stages at 5 p.m. or we would lose the stages in Toronto for many months,” Del Toro said. “So, I said, ‘Don’t forget we’re gonna lose the stages,’ and five o’clock came and went, and we lost the stages.

When “Pacific Rim” was released in 2013, Guillermo del Toro made it clear that he envisioned the kaiju film as the beginning of a franchise. But while the monsters-vs-robots blockbuster brought in a respectable global box office haul and became profitable enough to justify a sequel, it never quite became the cultural phenomenon that many expected it to be. The “Pan’s Labyrinth” director eventually had to drop out of directing the second film, “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” to focus on making “The Shape of Water.”
In a new interview with Collider to commemorate the film’s 10th anniversary, del Toro reflected on his plans to direct a sequel that never materialized. He explained that a logistical error involving a producer failing to put down a deposit on soundstages led to a lengthy delay that forced him to exit the project.

There is a lot of confusion surrounding Marvel Studios’ upcoming series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” Is it a continuation of the Netflix series? If not, why have the same actors in the roles? Marvel has been a bit vague on the details, but fans aren’t the only ones a bit frustrated by the lack of clarity regarding the idea behind ‘Born Again.’ Is it a reboot? Is it a revival?

If you’re looking forward to Daredevil: Born Again, one reason could be that you aren’t losing out on any royalties. Steven DeKnight, who served as showrunner for the original Daredevil series’ first season, is coming after Disney for their rebranding of the character and property, saying it’s a “scam” .
DeKnight’s take on the Daredevil reboot comes from a post on X (formerly Twitter) by a grip, who is also a member of the union IATSE. “And not only did they cancel Daredevil once crew got full raise and holiday/vacation pay…. The Disney+ reboot is back to season one IATSE contract terms. It’s a fucking scam. I wonder if @stevendeknight knows that!”
To this, Steven DeKnight responded, “He does. It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!

If fans are wondering why Marvel’s resurrected “Daredevil” series has been given a different name, “Daredevil: Born Again”, the series’ original showrunner is here to explain the renaming is “an old Disney scam” meant to squash contractual deals with the series’ crew.
To recap: Marvel (owned by Disney) produced three seasons of “Daredevil”, which streamed on Netflix. When Disney launched its own competing streaming service, “Disney+”, all Marvel series were eventually removed from Netflix, and now reside on Disney+.
“I’m not going to see a penny from ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ because they added the ‘Born Again’.”
In July 2022, Marvel president Kevin Feige revealed that part of the MCU’s Phase 5 would be a new “Daredevil” series, “Daredevil: Born Again”, featuring star Charlie Cox reviving the role of blind lawyer/vigilante Matt Murdock.

Steven DeKnight, showrunner on Netflix’s Marvel Daredevil series, calls the upcoming Disney+ series “an old Disney scam” that will keep the Netflix series creatives from getting what is due to them financially.
Written and executive produced by Covert Affairs‘ Matt Corman and Chris Ord, the new installment centers on Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, otherwise known as Matt Murdock, an attorney by day and crimefighter by night. Vince D’Onofrio reprises his role as mob boss Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.
DeKnight served as the showrunner for the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil, which launched in 2015 and ran for three seasons.
DeKnight was responding to a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) by a grip named Thomas, who is part of the IATSE union that represents film, TV and stage crew workers.
Thomas wrote that the retitling of the series is “a f***ing scam”, designed to reset guild contract terms to Season 1 levels.

Steven DeKnight, who served as the showrunner on the first season of Netflix’s “Daredevil,” recently took to social media to criticize Disney for running a scam with its upcoming reboot series “Daredevil: Born Again” (via Entertainment Weekly). The 18-episode series features the returns of Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Bernthal, who starred on the original Netflix series as Daredevil, Kingpin and Punisher, respectively.
“It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season,” DeKnight wrote on X/Twitter. “Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!”
“From what I understand, I’m not going to see a penny from ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ because they added the ‘Born Again’ and can claim it’s a completely different show,” he explained. “You know, with the exact same two lead actors (who I love!) playing Daredevil and Fisk.

Steven DeKnight, known for the Netflix version of “Daredevil” and “Jupiter’s Legacy,” has called Disney+’s upcoming reboot of the superhero drama an “old Disney scam.”

When news broke in July 2022 that Daredevil would be staging a comeback on Disney+, there was a collective sigh of relief.
In the aftermath, though, plenty of announcements about Daredevil: Born Again have given even the franchise's biggest fans pause.
While Charlie Cox is set to return as Matt Murdock, many of his costars from the original Netflix series are not.
Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson are out as Karen and Foggy, respectively, meaning that Matt will be without his two closest allies.
However, Vincent D'Onofrio is back as Wilson Fisk, meaning that our titular superhero will not be missing his biggest adversary.
But Fisk's wife Vanessa was recast, with Sandrine Holt joining the cast of the 18-episode next chapter.
Disney+ hasn't called Daredevil: Born Again the fourth season, so there's been plenty of debate about what, if anything, will be the same as the Netflix iteration.

Members of the striking Writers Guild of America voiced their frustrations about the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers’ latest attempts to resume negotiations following a meeting Friday that was designed to determine if there was a path forward. The guild informed members Friday — day 95 of the strike — that the talks with the group that represents the studios and streamers produced no agreement.
Included in the update to WGA members was the union’s summary of the issues both sides planned to bring back to the table when negotiations formally resume.
According to the Writers Guild memo, the AMPTP is seeking to use the deal that the Directors Guild of America agreed to earlier this summer as a template for shared issues like pay increases and expressed a willingness to increase their offer on a few writer-specific TV minimums — but not such core writer issues as the minimum size...

At first glance, They Cloned Tyrone seems to find John Boyega on well-trodden ground. For the first 20 minutes of the Netflix release, Boyega’s face never changes from a hardened scowl as his character Fontaine goes through his day. Fontaine’s actions will seem familiar to anyone who’s heard an “urban” narrative, as Hollywood once often called them; Tyrone buys a 40 and some scratch-offs, he beats up a competitor on his corner, and he threatens a pimp who owes him money.
More than the generic constraints of Fontaine’s day, however, viewers may recognize elements of Boyega’s breakout character from more than a decade ago now in the unrepentant drug dealer he plays in Tyrone. Moviegoers first met Boyega as Moses in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block (2011), a film directed by Joe Cornish. We all know that the entertainment industry is unfair and that, in most cases, those who work the hardest get the smallest piece of the cake. Well, how about that piece of cake being small yet never arriving at your table?
In the wake of the strikes that are shaking up the industry (and rightfully so), many writers, producers, and showrunners are coming out with their stories about the money entertainment corporations owe them.
For instance, Cody Ziglar, a writer for MCU’s ‘She-Hulk’ series, says his residual check for the show was $396. For those who are unacquainted with the term, residual payment (also known as backend payment or backend compensation) is part of a contract that agrees upon profit sharing after the work is finished and receives profits.
For example, if a writer contractually agrees upon 1% of backend compensation, and the show/movie earns a profit of $100000, his residual check would be $1000.

The Directors Guild’s tentative agreement for a new film and TV contract “is the biggest we’ve ever negotiated” and “is almost double what we got last time,” former DGA President Paris Barclay says in a new video posted on the guild’s website featuring members touting the deal.
Barclay, currently the DGA’s secretary-treasurer, served as president from 2013-2017. He also co-chaired the guild’s Outreach Team that supported membership awareness and engagement going into the contract negotiations, which began May 10.

While Barclay may have been speaking rhetorically and a bit off the cuff about the gains being “almost double what we got last time,” the 5% pay increase in the first year of the new contract is indeed double the 2.5% pay raise achieved three years ago, while the 4% pay hike in the second...
Barclay, currently the DGA’s secretary-treasurer, served as president from 2013-2017. He also co-chaired the guild’s Outreach Team that supported membership awareness and engagement going into the contract negotiations, which began May 10.

Early responses are beginning to come in regarding the details of the Directors Guild of America’s deal with studios and streamers, which were revealed on Wednesday night.
Amid a Writers Guild of America strike, and as performers’ union SAG-AFTRA negotiates with entertainment companies represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers following its own strike authorization, the DGA reached a tentative pact it called “historic.” Some of its members aren’t so sure.
During a Zoom meeting to explain the deal to membership on Thursday, DGA leadership justified the timing of the pact, struck on June 3. “We went as late as one could go within our window” and negotiated for one day later than planned, one guild executive told The Hollywood Reporter, seemingly addressing criticism that the DGA pulled the trigger too quickly rather than holding out for more leverage.

As the Writers Guild enters its second calendar month of a strike, a key alliance in its fight for increased residuals, wages and AI protections has struck a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
In a tentative deal that is poised to be submitted for approval Tuesday to its National Board, the Directors Guild of America spent all day Saturday at the table and reached a tentative agreement with the AMPTP just before midnight Sunday. The three-year agreement sees the 19,000-member guild receive pay and benefits gains, increases in global streaming residuals and protections against the use of artificial intelligence, which sources say was the last sticking point to a deal that came after less than a month of negotiations with the AMPTP. The DGA’s current contract, along with that of SAG-AFTRA, expires June 30. The actors branch currently has members voting to authorize a strike,...

Updated: Reaction is coming in after the Directors Guild and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reached a tentative deal on a new three-year contract late Saturday night. Striking writers express some disappointment in their sister union while showing resolve in their own fight for a fair deal with the studios. And, with the Succession finale still fresh in everyone’s mind, many are using memes from the saga about corporate intrigue and backstabbing to illustrate their reactions on social media.
“I wasn’t around in ’08, but this feels like that from what I’ve heard,” a writer working on streaming series told Deadline Sunday. “The WGA takes a stand, the DGA reaps the rewards.”
A veteran showrunner assessed the impact of the DGA pact while also looking ahead to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization vote which concludes Monday.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s newly launched Max lumped film directors and writers under a single “creators” heading — a change that prompted a backlash from filmmakers and Hollywood’s directors and writers guilds. Now the company says it is reverting the listings back to how they were presented on HBO Max, blaming the issue on a technical “oversight.”
“We agree that the talent behind the content on Max deserve their work to be properly recognized,” a Max spokesperson said in a statement to Variety. “We will correct the credits, which were altered due to an oversight in the technical transition from HBO Max to Max and we apologize for this mistake.”
Max’s move to consolidate writers, directors and other creatives under the single “creators” listing drew ire amid the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, as the union is seeking to reach a new contract with major studios through the...

Updated June 28: Max says the rollout of the updated credits will begin rolling out the week of June 28.
Previous: Max has responded to the controversy with the following statement: “We agree that the talent behind the content on Max deserve their work to be properly recognized. We will correct the credits, which were altered due to an oversight in the technical transition from HBO Max to Max and we apologize for this mistake.”
The decision to fix the credits comes as the writers and directors guild took a hard line against the Max grouping:
“For almost 90 years, the Directors Guild has fought fiercely to protect the credit and recognition deserved by Directors for the work they create. Warner Bros. Discovery’s unilateral move, without notice or consultation, to collapse directors, writers, producers and others into a generic category of ‘creators’ in their new Max rollout while we are in...

Spike is a monster. Whatever else you think of the vampire-turned-love interest of the influential tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, actor James Marsters wants you to know that he’s a monster. Sure, it’s easy to see how he became a favorite among fans, with his shocking blonde hair, leather duster, and bad attitude. But it’s also hard to narratively justify a vampire turning from Slayer-killer to trusted ally to love interest.
This tension is not lost on Marsters, who admits he wouldn’t have kept his character around. “If it had been me producing that show, I would have killed Spike off in a heartbeat,” Marsters admitted to Radio Times. “As soon as the audience said, ‘Oh, we want him. Oh, have him with Buffy. Oh, we love that character.’ Like uh-uh. He’s ruining the whole thing.” But Marsters has nothing but gratitude for the...
