Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of brilliant African-American women working at Nasa, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big. Photo Credit: Hopper Stone.

As Hurricane Harvey’s floodwaters took over his first-floor apartment in Dickinson, Texas, 13-year-old Virgil Smith left his building and entered the dangerous waters to heroically come to the aid of his neighbors—all while using an air mattress.
Virgil and his mother, Lisa Wallace, took shelter in a nearby neighbor’s second-floor apartment after water rushed into their ground floor home. It was around 2 a.m. when young Virgil received a call from friends requesting help because they couldn’t swim.
“I was like, ‘Man, I gotta go get them right now,’ ” Virgil told ABC 13 News. “I gotta go help my friends.

As you can probably tell by some of the reviews I have here on Nerdly, I am a fan of classic pornography. Between the early 70′s and mid 80′s, there were many classics not just being churned out, but being released with as much care and attention as some of the biggest “legitimate” films of the era. Performers who could genuinely act, directors with actual artistic vision, script writers and talented individuals behind the scenes. These were actual films. Fast forward to today and although there is still some genuine talent, one can’t help but feel that the industry has lost some of its artistry and craftsmanship. Instead of performers who can deliver lines, we now have a pretty face with a shelf life...

A serial killer has plagued Days of Our Lives for weeks, strangling people with (don't laugh) neckties. While most of the victims have been far from fan favorites, consisting mostly of people that needed to be culled from the cast, today the killer claimed a surprising victim — Will Horton. Will famously came out of the closet in 2011, garnering the show a slew of press, Daytime Emmys, and GLAAD Awards. Will has been a focal point in storylines since his birth on November 16, 1995. He's been played by several actors over the years, most notably Chandler Massey (during his coming out storyline) and Guy Wilson (his most recent portrayer). Will's death, brutally strangled to death on Friday's episode, leaves one remaining gay character on canvas — Paul Narita (Christopher Sean) who joined last year and was revealed to be the secret son of ex-Priest/current-international spy John Black, because...

Our friend Steve Dalachinsky reports that Long Shot publisher Danny Shot says poetry scene icon Herschel Silverman passed away quietly today. Silverman, the least bohemian of the Beat poets, served in the Navy in World War II and the Korean war, then worked for thirty-four years at his candy store in Bayonne, New Jersey and raised a family, but also wrote and published poetry on the side after being inspired by Allen Ginsberg's 1955 poem "Howl." The candy store was named Hersch's Beehive, and Beehive Press was his self-publishing outlet, though he was also published in many magazines. A children's book about him, The Candystore Man, was written by Jonathan London.
The not-always-complimentary Ginsberg said of him, "There is inventive energy New Jersey beauty and charm in his compositions. This writing is marked by soulful perception of life around him and language as it falls from his mouth, it includes...

Batman/Planetary: Night on Earth
Written by Warren Ellis
Artwork by John Cassaday
Published by DC/Wildstorm Comics
In the pantheon of unarguably great comics, Warren Ellis’ Planetary holds a permanent seat, being both devilishly clever in its premise and magnificent in its execution. For some 27 issues Ellis, along with artist John Cassaday (with occasional help) opened the chest cavity of 20th century genre fiction, performing the most reverent, respectful and gleeful autopsy known in either fiction or reality. Pulp adventure crimebusters, comic book superheroes, kung-fu cinema, Kaiju Eiga, and more came under Ellis’ knife, both tied together in one beautiful circulatory system and carefully extracted and brought gleaming like new into the light of day. There was also one issue with Batman in it, and it kicked a lot of arse.
The crossover took place in Batman/Planetary: Night on Earth, a one-shot released in August of 2003, which saw...

After several cast changes and an eight-year journey to the screen, Matthew Weiner’s feature directorial Are You Here finally made its Hollywood premiere last night at the Arclight on Sunset Blvd. This Friday, Millennium Entertainment will unspool the film, which stars Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler, in limited theaters as well as on DVD.

Despite his reputation for creating the monumental, award-winning period TV drama Mad Men, Weiner’s uphill battle to get Are You Here made further underscores the challenges of getting adult feature dramas off the ground. For actors who yearn for creative and professional empowerment—and don’t mind a bit of rain—Seattle may be the theater industry’s best-kept secret. “One of the things we try to do as much as possible here is keep actors employed,” says Bill Berry, producing artistic director of Seattle’s historic 5th Avenue Theatre. When casting a new season, the city’s biggest companies gather to resolve booking conflicts and maximize local artists’ time onstage. “We get on the phone with each other and say, ‘Hey, we both want the same actor, can we work it out?’ That way the actor can have 14 weeks of work as opposed to just seven weeks at one theater,” he says. If you’re struggling for work elsewhere, the idea of such consideration might seem foreign. The Seattle theater scene is a well-oiled machine fueled by a commitment to community-building, a home...

"Suits" is committed to keeping Mike's secret away from Louis Litt, and "Yesterday's Gone" makes it clear why: Louis loves the letter of the law and won't let anything compromise that.
Since the rest of the episode is about people sticking closer to truth than to the law, Louis is in the minority. Maybe that's why he caves to the peer pressure and doesn't destroy Mike when he has the chance.
Is it over? Probably not, but Mike and Harvey at least get a reprieve. Find out how it turns out in this recap.

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and this October we see a couple of items that we could certainly circle as potential Cannes 2014 bait. Thanks to our friends at Production Weekly for the helping hand in curating our list of future must see items.
Among the top foreign film productions, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover‘s Peter Greenaway is looking at a late October, possible November start to begin filming a fragment of the great Soviet master filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s bio timeline. Eisenstein In Guanajuato will cover the portion of the filmmaker’s post Battleship Potemkin career, with Eisenstein landing in Mexico after Hollywood studios balked at the idea of working with him and in its place finds romance. The Girl Who Played with Fire‘s Daniel Alfredson...

An acting great British of the post-war era, Trevor Howard's the subject of a new movie box set. Aliya looks at its five classic films...
It's difficult to describe Trevor Howard. I could start by saying he was a great leading man of British post-war cinema, but that leaves out his supporting turns in films like The Third Man, and his character performances, such as Captain Bligh in Mutiny On The Bounty (1962), or Sir Henry At Rawlinson End (1980). He could be called an upper-class gentleman, but in Sons And Lovers (1960) he played a Nottinghamshire miner perfectly.
I could talk about how he wasn't traditionally handsome, but the look in his eyes when he falls passionately for Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter) contains a male beauty that continues to define cinematic love today. Or maybe I could mention how perfectly he inhabited the role of...

A question mark continues to hang over Lamar Odom's future in the NBA—and the L.A. Lakers won't be providing any answers at this time. John Black, the team's VP of public relations, tells E! News that there is "no truth at all" to rumors that the Lakers are reserving a roster spot for Odom—or any other free agent—for the coming season. Odom, who won two championship rings and a Sixth Man of the Year Award during his seven-season run with the Lakers, is currently a free agent. He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 and then was part of a four-player trade that landed him with the L.A. Clippers, the team he started his career with, for the 2012-13 season. But while...

New York — The subject of bad dates comes up during an interview with Krysta Rodriguez, and she offers up a doozy.
A few years ago, she and her boyfriend spent a ton of money on an expensive meal to celebrate their one-year anniversary. Around the dessert course, a man at a nearby table had a seizure and collapsed.
An ambulance was called and the man was taken away. He turned out to be Ok, but Rodriguez's romantic date was a casualty that night.
"My boyfriend was so upset by it that he vomited the whole dinner. He had to run outside in the flower bed out front of the restaurant and throw up," she says, laughing. "I ended up taking care of him all night long on our anniversary while he literally vomited $400 worth of food."
Rodriguez tells the story because romantic missteps are on her mind these days: The...

Some details on the fourth season of The Walking Dead are beginning to shuffle onto the net, and the latest tidbit from TV Line introduces us to three new faces that'll have to beware the biters when AMC's excellent series returns to our screens. “The show could just as easily wind up being too busy with new recurring characters like Laura, a single mom and ex-nurse who isn’t quite as strong as she first appears; Melody, a ‘just one of the guys’ kinda gal in her 20s; and Don, who sounds like Hershel, if Hershel were crankier and two-legged.” There was a character named Don in the comics (a King County Sheriff's deputy) but unless my memory is not what it used to be I don't think the other two are Robert Kirkman creations. Either way, It'll be interesting to see how they fit into the story as the...
