I’m beginning to think Harry Ambrose is too old for this ish.
The Sinner‘s Season 4 opener picks up a year after the Jamie Burns case, and the since-retired detective (again played by Bill Pullman) is still haunted by visions of the night he shot and killed the sociopath. (He continues to suffer from post-traumatic stress, and he’s only recently weaned off of antidepressants.) He and his partner Sonya (fellow returnee Jessica Hecht) travel to Hanover Island in northern Maine for some much needed rest and relaxation, but an unexpected tragedy occurs almost immediately upon their arrival. Once again, Peepers, a film I saw on Sunday at the Just for Laughs Film Festival, is a proof that in Canadian cinema, there are no taboo topics. As a matter of fact, Peepers adds itself to the growing list of smartly written Canadian comedies that deal with sexual desire.
A group of peeping toms led by Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a loser who lives in his mom's basement, enjoys taking Montreal's chilly rooftops during the night. However, the peeping toms' life is about to change when Annette Fulvish (Janine Theriault), an academic interested by "male gaze", enters the domain of peeping, which is dominated by men.
At the same time, some members in the group begin to question their interest for peeping. Bobby (Ricky Mabe), the youngest member of the group,...
A group of peeping toms led by Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a loser who lives in his mom's basement, enjoys taking Montreal's chilly rooftops during the night. Through the unshuttered windows, they want to have a glimpse at a “hottie hookup,” a “panty party” or a “big booty buffet”.

As usual, Montreal's Just for Laughs Film Festival has two Canadian films in store and they both come from the province of Quebec. The one we're going to talk is called Peepers, a comedy that follows three peeping toms from Montreal.
Led by the eagle-eyed Steve Sherman (Joe Cobden), a rag-tag group of Peepers take to Montreal’s chilly rooftops under cover of night. They’re on the prowl for the perfect peep—desperate to glimpse a “hottie hookup,” a “panty party” or a “big booty buffet” through unshuttered windows.
But their lives are about to change. Enter Annette Fulvish (Janine Theriault), a brazen academic who turns the tables by setting her sights on the Peepers themselves. Soon it’s a battle royale for rooftop supremacy—will these die-hard obsessives manage to defend their turf, or will Peeping as they know it never be the same?
The ensemble cast also...

HBO Canada announced that it renewed its half-hour series Living in Your Car for a second season.
With the unstable economy as a backdrop, we follow Steve Unger (John Ralston), a fallen corporate executive whose rule of the financial world comes to an abrupt halt when he is arrested and charged with fraud, obstruction and racketeering. After cutting a deal to get out of prison, Steve quickly realizes his old life no longer exists: his former colleagues shun him, his wife, Lori (Ingrid Kavelaars), and daughter, Kate (Mariah Horner), don’t want to live with him, and even his own parents refuse to help him. As he clings desperately to the last vestige of his former self – a luxury sedan – Steve finds himself under court order to teach an ethics class, forbidden from working in any position that involves other people’s money, and making a new home for himself in his car.

From July 13th to the 18th, the Just for Laughs Festival will hod its 14th edition of Just for Laughs Film in Montreal. Besides, The Cultural Post got wind of Just for Laughs Film's line-up.
First of all, speaking about Canadian feature films, there will be two ones: Alain Desrochers's Cabotins and Seth W. Owen’s Peepers. The first film stars Rémy Girard, Yves Jacques, Dorothée Berryman, Gilles Renaud and Pierre-François Legendre. It tells the story of a ruined ex-showman and actor who would like to get back in the world of burlesque theatre with his former colleagues and organize a tour. As for Peepers, it stars Joe Cobden, Paul Spence, Jessica Paré, Janine Theriault and Ricky Mabe. It tells the story of three men who sneak across Montreal's rooftops with binoculars. However, a young female student gives to these men a taste of their own game.

Yesterday, The Cultural Post learnt through Twitter that the teaser for the upcoming feature film Peepers is already online.
While the film's director is Seth W. Owen, the story was created by the imagination of Automatic Vaudeville, a Canadian comic trio made of Owen, Mark Slutsky and Daniel Perlmutter.
The story follows a group of voyeurs - or "peepers" (Joe Cobden, Paul Spence and Howard Bilerman) - who like to sneak across rooftops with binoculars at night. Moreover, they have an eye on women. However, an university student (Janine Theriault) plans to give to the "peepers" a taste of their own game. With a plot like that, needless to say that the film's story has been compared to Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window.
Besides, the film also stars Jessica Paré, Ricky Mabe and Amy Sobol.
Finally, a theatrical release date has yet to be announced for this comedy that was shot in Montreal.

Prolific Canadian director Anne Wheeler, whose 1999 film "Better Than Chocolate" was a sharp, sexy breath of fresh air, is back with another adult-themed romantic comedy that promises more of the same.
Alas, "Suddenly Naked" seldom makes good on that promise.
A sitcom-y portrait of an older woman/younger man liaison set in the world of book publishing, the picture is mired in flitty, formulaic scripting and marked by a go-for-broke lead performance by Wendy Crewson that could have been toned down a couple of notches without losing its larger-than-life appeal.
While it is understandably hoping to cast a reasonably wide commercial net with its frank sexuality and deliberate avoidance of Canadian specifics, "Naked" will likely fall considerably short of "Chocolate"'s much-better-than-average performance.
Crewson plays Jackie, a 39-year-old best-selling author who is equal parts Collins and Susann.
Stuck in a rut of writer's block and meaningless one-night stands with admirers (whom she categorizes in a database according to physical attributes and stamina), Jackie is watched over by fellow author Lionel Heathcoate (trusty Peter Coyote), who cooks disgusting-sounding low-fat dishes for her, secretly hoping to one day become more than just her confidant.
Enter Patrick McKeating (Joe Cobden), a lanky, slightly goofy, promising writer half Jackie's age who works part time at Shawarma King juggling torches and whose idea of sophisticated snacking involves Trix straight from the package.
Despite her initial protestations, Jackie ultimately surrenders herself to Patrick's young, idealistic advances, and, after a couple of false starts, she finally learns what it means to be true to herself.
Cue the commercials.
Although the script, by Elyse Friedman, has its share of witty lines, there's a forced quality to the situations that prevents them from being involvingly believable.
Wheeler, who directs with her usual visual energy, works hard to make the material sing, but the notes that are produced tend to come off as either sharp or flat rather than natural.
One of the few exceptions is a winning sequence in which Jackie and Lionel take a stab at a physical relationship, but everything they do to set the mood ends up feeling awkward and silly.
More moments like that would have made "Naked" the kind of candid, sophisticated big-screen comedy worthy of Wheeler's proven touch.
