Christian Bale has acted in many genres in the film industry, including musicals. He famously starred in the 1992 film Newsies, which developed a bit of a cult following over the years. It also allegedly had an unexpected effect on Bale’s movie career.

Bale was still on the rise as an actor after doing the 1992 feature Newsies. The film was a musical where a very young Christian Bale played a homeless newsboy who later goes on strike. At the time the film came out, the Batman Begins star found himself starring in many critically and financially underwhelming movies.
Empire of the Sun, which he did with Steven Spielberg, didn’t earn as much as Spielberg’s other successful projects. Bale also had a small part in Henry V, which didn’t make much money at the box-office,...

No two people get their start in Hollywood the same way. Take Leonardo DiCaprio, for instance, who made his movie acting debut in, of all things, "Critters 3" in 1991. By that point, his peer Christian Bale had already worked on films with the likes of directors Steven Spielberg and Kenneth Branagh.
The duo's careers have deviated pretty wildly since then, even as they've evolved into two of the most respected working actors in their age bracket. Where DiCaprio has made it his practice to avoid superhero movies and sequels, Bale has starred in everything from "Terminator" films to movies about Batman and Thor, in-between far more esoteric and anti-commercial undertakings with Terrence Malick and Werner Herzog. But for all the ways their paths have differed from one another, the duo has also joined forces with many of the same directors, including Spielberg, Adam McKay, and Christopher Nolan.

Christian Bale's former publicist has released a new tell-all biography of the actor. Harrison Cheung, Bale's co-worker for a decade, has written the book Christian Bale - The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman, which reveals his time spent with the Dark Knight Rises star. Cheung claims that Bale had often cited Leonardo DiCaprio as his nemesis when it came to landing big movie roles, as the Departed actor would often land parts that he had also applied for. "DiCaprio. The name burned Christian like a branding iron," Cheung writes. "Over the years, Christian had lost This Boy's Life and What's Eating Gilbert Grape to DiCaprio. Christian had read for the part of Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet but was told that they had decided to cast an African-American in the part instead. "Christian (more)...

Christian Bale‘s former assistant Harrison Cheung seems like he’s out for blood with his new tell-all Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman, claiming, “It only took me five years of therapy to get past my Bale years. My therapist would describe my condition as post-traumatic stress disorder.” While the details like the fact Christian refused to pay Cheung unless he signed a confidentiality agreement after Cheung started working for him seemed profoundly sketch, other bizarro specifics…actually make us like Bale more. Let’s be real, after the world heard his rant from the set of Terminator: Salvation, we all knew this guy was a little nuts. Certain anecdotes from Cheung’s tell-all, however, make Christian seem nuts in an fabulous, eccentric movie star way. For example…

A new picture of Christian Bale emerges in a just-released biography by his former publicist and assistant, Harrison Cheung. Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman, published May 29 on BenBella, reveals an actor who fought desperately to emerge from the world of independent British cinema into a complex, often incorrigible but above-all, ambitious global superstar.
HuffPost Entertainment read the book and found the following 14 details to be of particular interest. Some of these tidbits were previously covered in the media, but others -- like which of his characters he most identifies with -- appear to be new information. Before reading, consider one important note: Cheung once worked for the "Dark Knight Rises" star and no longer does. The following items are all taken from a book that is written from the former publicist's point of view. Cheung writes in the book that he was never actually paid for his years of service,...

Christian Bale's former assistant Harrison Cheung has described the Dark Knight star as a 'deeply troubled soul'. Cheung, who worked with the actor for ten years, said Bale would be "mortified" by the publicity he received following his arrest for alleged assault last week. He said: "I am sure he is mortified by the publicity he's generated this week with the row between him and his mum. But it was (more)...

Actor Christian Bale's fiery temper was triggered by the pressures of fame, his former assistant has claimed.
The Dark Knight star, 34, was arrested earlier this week (ends25Jul08) over claims he assaulted his mother and sister on the eve of The Dark Knight premiere in London.
And ex-employee Harrison Cheung blames Bale's early start in Hollywood for his temper.
He says, "When he filmed a movie called Metroland (1997), his nickname was Tandy because he was always throwing tantrums.
"He would yell until he was red in the face. It was very intimidating.
"Fame started to change Christian. He went from earning GBP100,000 ($200,000) a movie to earning millions."
Cheung believes Bale, who also played a convincing American Psycho in the chilling movie adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis' novel, is not that far removed from his Batman character.
He explains, "People say Christian is a great Batman because he brings a darkness to the role. But I know the real Christian and I know the darkness is not an act."
Cheung also claims Bale never really wanted a career in Hollywood and was forced into acting by his father, Davd.
The former assistant insists the Batman Begins star was insecure and lacked confidence.
He adds, "He'd never trained as an actor and told me there were demons inside him saying, 'You can't do this. You're not good enough.'
"He thought about quitting many times. Then he'd say, 'But who would support my family?'...

Batman star Christian Bale is "mortified" by the publicity surrounding his arrest for alleged assault last week, according to his former assistant.
Harrison Cheung - who worked for Bale for a decade - says the actor would be feeling embarrassed by the incident, but insists Bale is not a "bad soul".
The 34-year-old actor was arrested in London last week over accusations he attacked his mother Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, at the capital's Dorchester Hotel.
Bale was questioned by police over the incident and was subsequently released on bail.
He recently requested the media to respect his privacy in what he has branded "a deeply personal matter", but Cheung insists the family feud has been brimming for years.
He says, "I am sure he is mortified by the publicity he's generated this week with the row between him and his mum. But it was a row that has been years in the making.
