The house invasion sub-genre has been around long before it become one of the standard tropes in modern horror cinema. It’s usually a good way to build suspense by keeping the action confined to a restricted setting. The Audrey Hepburn vehicle “Wait until Dark” upped the ante with this by making the heroine blind which only further added to the tension by increasing the vulnerability of the lead. In turn it became much more cathartic when they would finally get the upper hand. “Three Days of a Blind Girl” is of a similar vein as it seeks to be a rollercoaster ride of suspense for its audience.
Jack Ng (Anthony Chan) is with his wife (Veronica Yip) as she leaves a consultation with her doctor (Alfred Cheung). Due to a complication following an eye operation in the states, she will be temporarily blind for three days.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of Ricky Lau’s Hong Kong comedy horror show-cum-mystical martial arts romp. Introduced to the vampire mythos are some novel ideas, like scary-looking vampires that get around by hopping on two legs. Effective horror scenarios include expertly choreographed martial arts routines. However, the score on the genre mash-up front is “two out of three ain’t bad:” the brand of broad comedy that Mr. Vampire peddles is hit and miss when it comes to generating genuine laughs.

The Taiwan Film Institute has restored Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “Cheerful Wind”. The movie was released in 1982 for lunar new year, and is part of Hou Hsiao Hsen’s more commercial movies, earlier in his career. It reunites three popstars that were already in his first feature.
“Cheerful Wind” screened at Udine Far East Film Festival 2020
Hsiao Hsing-hui (Feng Fei-fei) is a photographer working on a commercial with her boyfriend, Lo Zai (played by Anthony Chan). As they are shooting on the Pescadores Islands, they run into a blind man who plays the harmonica and the flute: Ku Chin-tai (Kenny Bee). The young woman and her boyfriend go back to Taipei, only to run into the flute player. From there, an (ambiguous) friendship grows between Hsing-hui and Chin-tai.

The eyes of the world were pointed at Donnie Yen after the end of the spectacular “Ip Man” saga. His choice of an action comedy as a follow-up might be seen as a bit of a surprise, but “Enter the Fat Dragon” blends the well-known elements, like the breath-taking, laws-of-physics-defying action, humor, references and a bit of covert social commentary into an efficient time-killer about the good cops, bad cops and even worse gangsters in Hong Kong and Tokyo. It premiered in the Chinese New Year slot earlier this year, but its theatrical run was impaired by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this type of film is equally suitable for video formats, where we also caught it.

Some movies are as interesting due to their theme and aesthetics as due to the context that surrounds them. “House of the Rising Sons”, a biopic about The Wynners, an extremely popular during the 70’s, Hong Kong teen idol group definitely falls under this category for a number of reasons. The group itself is the first, since their success was responsible for kick-starting the career of Alan Tam and Kenny Bee, both musician and actors. The second one is the director, Anthony Chan, who was actually the drummer of the original band, who returns to the seat of the director after ten years and “My Americanized Wife”. The last is the cast, which includes Hk legends Kara Hui and Simon Yam. Let us take a closer look at the film itself though.

The hopping dead of the 80s Hong Kong Mr. Vampire movie series is brought back to live in this lively but less comedy orientated tribute by Juno Mak, in his debut as a director.
The story is pretty simple; a middle- aged man moves into an apartment in an old, rundown block of building. As it turns out, he intends to end his life there because of his career and family problems. However, he fails his suicide attempt and becomes possessed by some evil spirits that still haunt his apartment.
From here, we are introduced to the rest of the occupants as he slowly gets to know them and learn about their everyday life, while strange things start to happen. Soon enough, besides the living, we encounter death, the undead, ghosts and the granddaddy of them all, the hopping vampire (Jiangshi) fully dressed in his finest traditional costume of course.

Vampire. Envision the creature. Do you picture the classic cloaked version? Or the frilly shirt-wearing kind? Or the feral? Or god forbid the sparkly ones? Vampires come in all shapes and sizes, and with Rigor Mortis coming to Blu-ray and DVD on July 8th, we decided to take a look at some of our favorites.
Ever since Bram Stoker brought us Dracula, filmmakers and storytellers have been modifying vamps and making them into all sorts of unique beasties. Some are pretty and some are really, really ugly… but they all drink blood and use humans like we use cattle.
Rigor Mortis features a very unique type of vampire, and it's always fun to see a creature that expands the legend.
So let's take a look at some of the coolest types of vampires that have come into our lives.
For starters, we'll begin with the classic vampire. And what do we mean by "classic" vampire?...

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Juno Mak. Producers: Takashi Shimizu and Juno Mak. Cast: Chin Siu-ho, Nina Paw Hee-ching, Anthony Chan, Kara Wai, Richard Ng and Chung Fat. Rigor Mortis is a Chinese film from Hong Kong. The film was developed by filmmaker Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and inexperienced director Juno Mak. A true visual marvel, Rigor Mortis offers lots of horror elements. Though, the film's story is fractured by a number of sideplots. Still, Rigor Mortis offers lots of action in its short runtime. This film viewer enjoyed the many practical effects and Mak's experimentation with the camera. The story begins with a reluctant hero. Siu-ho (Siu-ho Chin) is a former actor and he has been kicked out of his home, by his wife. He chooses suicide as an escape from his pain, but a neighbour intervenes. Tung (Richard Ng...

Rigor Mortis
Written by Lai-yin Leung and Philip Yung
Directed by Juno Mak
Hong Kong, 2013
Asian horror cinema is one of the most original and frightening forms of storytelling around. Films like Ringu and Ju-on: The Grudge are solid proof that the far east offers exciting new platforms for supernatural creatures (like ghosts) to scare and entice. A slightly interesting but overall mediocre new film, Rigor Mortis continues this trend, but, sadly, the results are somewhat disappointing. This horror-action hybrid from Hong Kong is actually a tribute to the 1985 horror-comedy Mr. Vampire, and contains some of the same actors from that film.
Taking place in an apartment housing complex in Hong Kong, Rigor Mortis focuses on washed-up actor Chin Siu Ho, played, appropriately enough, by Chin Siu-Ho. With his family out of the picture and his career in the toilet, Chin decides to end it all by hanging himself. When he attempts to do this,...

Juno Mak's directorial debut Rigor Mortis is a lot of things. Some of it sticks and some of it doesn't. First and foremost though, Rigor Mortis is a love letter to 80s vampire classic Mr. Vampire. Starring original cast members Chin Siu Ho, Anthony Chan, Richard Ng, Billy Lau and Chung Fa, as well as veteran actors Paw Hee Ching and Kara Hui, Juno Mak is clearly not afraid to take chances. Japanese horror master Shimizu Takashi acts as producer, which probably explains why Rigor Mortis is an uneven blend of vampire folklore and Japanese-style ghost story. On a visual level it can't be faulted, with Juno Mak introducing himself to the filmmaking world in ballsy fashion. There is, after all, a very good reason why it was nominated for three 2013 Golden Horse awards, including Best New Director and Best Makeup & Costume Design. Action star Siu Ho (Chin Siu Ho...

A quick update for those of us (that would be most of us) awaiting the DVD debut of Rigor Mortis. The Hong Kong version, complete with English subtitles, goes on sale January 23, 2014. Best known for performances in Revenge: A Love Story and Dream Home, Juno Mak has turned his attention to directing, and judging by the quality of this sneak peak, there's a strong possibility he might be on to something. Starring Anthony Chan and Siu-hou Chin, Rigor Mortis is an effects-laden, but ultimately striking, horror debut from the Best Actor at the 2011 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. Co-produced by J-Horror icon Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On), and reuniting some of the original cast members of the classic Mr Vampire series, Rigor Mortis is set in a haunted housing tower overrun by ghosts, vampires and zombies. Chin Siu-ho is a washed-up, former vampire hunting actor, down on his luck and penniless. He...

We've had our eyes on the Hong Kong vampire flick Rigor Mortis for a while. U.S. audience have to wait several months before Juno Mak's bloody mixture of comedy and horror sees a Stateside release, but it's nice to see overseas audiences are embracing it.
Variety is reporting that Rigor Mortis has taken in a total of $17.5 million (that's $2.23 million Usd) since its opening four weeks ago. That success was repeated last week when it became the top newcomer at the Taiwanese box office, pulling down Nt$13 million (or $400,000 Usd) in just ten days.
It's always interesting when a horror film captures the public's attention, no matter what corner of the world we're talking about. Sure, Rigor Mortis probably won't take the U.S. box office by storm, but it will be interesting to see what's got international horror fans all worked up.

Not too long ago we saw a rather impressive list of films announced for the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival 2013. With titles like Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and The Fifth Estate all set to appear, I simply cannot wait for September to arrive. With all the Oscar contenders flying around though, it’s easy to forget about some of the other films at the festival.
With that in mind, the Midnight Madness lineup has been announced today, showcasing some quality horror/thriller films that will serve as a break from the serious, weighty dramas that popular the majority of the festival lineup.
Amongst the highlights are the world premiere of Ei Roth’s The Green Inferno as well as the next film from Lucky McKee, All Cheerleaders Die.
Additionally, Tiff also revealed their documentary lineup today, which can be seen below along with the Midnight Madness films.

The Toronto International Film Festival celebrates 25 years of Midnight Madness with a murderers’ row of wild cinematic thrills. Programmed by Colin Geddes, the international lineup aims right for the jugular with everything from an extraterrestrial gore-thriller and sinister sex-comedy, to an Asian exotic horror film and a visually-stunning reinvention of the Italian cannibal genre.
“Since its 1988 launch, the Midnight Madness programme emerged as a touchstone of cinematic shock, satiating the adventurous palate of bloodthirsty cinephiles from all over the world,” said Geddes, International Programmer for the Festival. “When the witching hour strikes and the human brain starts slipping into dream mode, the Ryerson Theatre will once again serve up a feast of phantasmagorical characters and jaw-dropping scenes, playing host to bizarre biological monstrosities, ruthless dominatrix gangs, paranormal mirrors, and the hijinks of supernatural cheerleaders.”
