The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day to reflect on the legacy of one of the most important leaders America has ever seen, and for those who want a deeper dive into the life and impact of MLK Jr., there are a number of films worth checking out. On this national holiday, we’ve rounded up a list of some of the best MLK Jr. movies to watch and where to stream them. They range from narrative films that take some liberties to dramatize the civil rights leader’s life, to deep-dive documentaries.
Selma
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s 2014 film “Selma” offers a wonderfully complex portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. that chronicles the man’s inspiring impact, but also doesn’t neglect his personal shortcomings. The film covers the events surrounding the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, with David Oyelowo playing the role of Martin Luther King Jr.

What's Christian Bale's best performance? For me, it's still the American psycho himself, Patrick Bateman. Why does his acting in the 2000 horror-thriller stand above the rest of his filmography? Because Bale acted like he was in a comedy. Director Mary Harron said that she ultimately decided to cast Bale because she "sort of had the feeling a lot of the other actors kind of thought Bateman was cool. And he didn't." Together, she and Bale made a pitch-black, gut-busting comedy.
Bale's Patrick, even when's he not violent, is too phony to be charming. It's possible that Bateman is only imagining being a serial killer, but he's definitely a psychopath. His preppy accent is layered on top of a dull monotone and too-slow staccato intonations. Whether rattling off praise for his favorite musicians or championing political causes, it all sounds rehearsed because Bateman doesn't know what sincerity sounds like. When he laughs,...

In alignment with Gold Derby’s odds, Colman Domingo was just awarded the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actor for his work on HBO’s “Euphoria.” This is the 52-year-old performer’s first Emmy nomination and win following a quarter century’s worth of small screen credits.
With the exception of “Ozark” guest Tom Pelphrey, all of Domingo’s challengers hailed from the most-nominated program of the year: “Succession.” The quartet of men who earned notices for making non-regular appearances during that show’s third season were Adrien Brody, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed and Alexander Skarsgård. Cromwell was the only returning Best Drama Guest Actor nominee in the bunch, having previously been recognized for “ER” (2001), “Six Feet Under” (2003) and “Succession” (2020).

Domingo was given this honor based on his brief yet powerful performance in the second-season “Euphoria” episode “Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys.

Few shows, if any, can hope to rival "The Wire" in terms of quality, pop culture influence, or even just the sheer amount of stars-in-the-making who came and went throughout all five seasons of the acclaimed HBO series. From the various Baltimore cops attempting to navigate (and oftentimes directly contributing to) the corrupt system to the gangbangers carving out their territory in the streets to the various individuals caught in between them, creator David Simon made sure to cast each and every role with as much authenticity, talent, and gravitas as he could. After all, when one's ensemble boasts the likes of Lance Reddick, Wendell Pierce, Dominic West, Andre Royo, Michael K. Williams, Reg E. Cathey, and even a young Michael B. Jordan, you must be doing something right.

In 2019, Billy Porter made history as the first openly gay Black man to win a Primetime Emmy for acting. Prior to his Best Drama Actor victory for “Pose,” the only such nominee across all performance categories had been Tituss Burgess, who received his first of four supporting bids for the sitcom “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” in 2015. Now, two years after limited series lead Jeremy Pope (“Hollywood”) joined this groundbreaking group, newest member Colman Domingo has a shot at emulating Porter by taking the gold for his guest work on the HBO drama series “Euphoria.”
To date, Domingo has appeared in eight episodes of “Euphoria” as recovering alcoholic and drug addict Ali Muhammad. The second-season installment for which he is nominated, “Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys,” involves Muhammad and his Narcotics Anonymous sponsee, Rue Bennett (Zendaya), temporarily parting ways after she crudely shirks his friendship. With all that’s going on in the world today, the discussion around the entertainment industry’s lack of diversity is once again back in the headlines, and this has even extended to one of the worst blockbusters in recent history. Ever since it was released, most of the talk surrounding Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four has been about how much of an unmitigated disaster it was, and the effect that it had on the director’s career.
However, given the current climate and the initial backlash from the more narrow-minded sections of the fanbase that had an issue with Michael B. Jordan being cast as Johnny Storm that’s become timely once again, Trank revealed that the studio rejected his request to have a black actress play Sue Storm, which then ironically led to the same people that protested against Jordan’s involvement complaining that they’d changed the...

Josh Trank said that when he was directing the 2015 Marvel Comics flop “Fantastic Four,” Fox executives gave “pretty heavy pushback” on casting a black actress to play Sue Storm — even though she’s the superhero sister of Johnny Storm, played by Michael B. Jordan.
“There was a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind the scenes,” Trank said in an interview on Geeks of Color released Friday. “When it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a black woman in that role.”
Kate Mara, who is white, wound up playing the invisibility-powered Sue Storm — and she was explained to be the adopted daughter of Reg E. Cathey’s surgeon Franklin Storm.

Josh Trank suffered a raw deal when his 2015 Marvel movie “Fantastic Four” failed explosively at the box office and earned a dismal 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the “Chronicle” director has emerged on Letterboxd to comment on his own movie — which he reviewed harshly on the cinephile platform.
“The movie is Alright,” Trank wrote in his two-star review of “Fantastic Four,” which was a reportedly disastrous production involving reshoots and on-set drama that spiraled out of control. “I was expecting it to be much worse than it was. I literally haven’t seen it since like two weeks before it came out, and I was in a heavily fucking traumatized state of mind. Why? Eh, save that for another time.
“Anyway, movie review: Great cast. Everyone in the film is a great actor, and overall there is a movie in there, somewhere. And that cast deserves to be in That movie,...

Michael Kelly is on his fourth Emmy nomination for playing Doug Stamper, the former chief of staff for President Frank Underwood on “House of Cards.” He contends for Best Drama Supporting Actor for the sixth and final season of the flagship original series from Netflix. But the show almost didn’t get a proper sendoff at all after the Kevin Spacey scandal threatened to halt production. With the lead actor fired, Frank was killed off the show, and in this final season Doug tried to take down the new president, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). Kelly has submitted the series finale, “Chapter 73,” to Emmy voters for consideration.
The episode opens with Doug staring up at the camera asking what Frank would do. Later he addresses the press at the White House, angrily saying that Frank thought Claire was unfit to be president. Then Doug sits with a reporter, revealing the contents of Frank’s audio diary,...

For her fan-favorite role as Kim Wexler, Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”) currently ranks fourth in Gold Derby’s collective odds for Best Drama Supporting Actress, which has six nominations slots. This confidence is striking because the Emmys snubbed her for the first three seasons of AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” but Seehorn has much in her favor this year that she did not previously. Below, I lay out four reason why Seehorn will finally score her first Emmy bid this year.
SEEthe “Better Call Saul” DVDs that Emmy voters received.
1. She is out of the probationary period
It often takes years for the Emmys to nominate breakthrough performances, with consensus only forming initially for more familiar names. The most obvious parallel is Anna Gunn in “Breaking Bad.” Gunn was not nominated until the fourth season, then won Best Drama Supporting Actress the next two years. Co-star Aaron Paul became...

Last year Netflix won its first-ever lead actress Emmys for Claire Foy (“The Crown”) and Regina King (“Seven Seconds”), but the streaming service has yet to take home a trophy for any of its lead actors. Might Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) make history for Netflix by becoming the first? Bateman just won the Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on the gritty money-laundering drama, and is now our Emmy Experts’ prediction to win Best Drama Actor at the 2019 ceremony.
See‘Ozark’ is about to explode at the Emmys, just like ‘Breaking Bad’ did 10 years ago
In recent years such leading men as Kyle Chandler (“Bloodline”) and Kevin Spacey (“House of Cards”) earned nominations for Netflix’s dramas, Bateman (“Arrested Development”), Ricky Gervais (“Derek”) and Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”) scored bids for its comedies, and Gervais (“Derek: The Special”) and Jesse Plemons (“USS Callister: Black Mirror”) were recognized for its telefilms.

There was only a slim chance that Robert Kirkman’s Outcast could go to a third season, and that is now gone. “There are no further plans for Outcast at this time,” a spokesman for the network said in a statement.
The news comes as a little surprise. Outcast had been on the back burner at Cinemax, with its second season finally airing this summer, two and a half years after it was ordered and about two years after it was produced. The options on the cast have long lapsed, and everyone had moved on.
A few months after Cinemax renewed Outcast for Season 2 in March 2016 ahead of its series premiere, the network overhauled its programming strategy, pulling away from expensive, dark hometown series like Outcast in favor of fun, high-octane, action, pulpy dramas done in a cost-effective way primarily as international co-productions.

Jordan Peele’s Get Out was brilliant in its satirical take on race relations in today’s America, but another Sundance feature proved to be even more harrowing in its realistic depiction of how subtle racism can play out. Sebastián Silva’s latest film Tyrel follows Jason Mitchell’s character Tyler placed in a testosterone-heavy, white man-filled weekend and the anxiety-inducing isolation he’s faced with. Ahead of a December release, the first trailer has now arrived.

According to hundreds of Gold Derby users currently predicting the Creative Arts Emmys, Cameron Britton (“Mindhunter”) is the front-runner to win Best Drama Guest Actor for his role as real-life serial killer Ed Kemper. But on paper that might seem unlikely. “Mindhunter” got no other nominations, so can he really take down actors from Best Drama Series contenders like “This is Us” (Gerald McRaney and Ron Cephas Jones), “The Crown” (Matthew Goode) and “Westworld” (Jimmi Simpson)? To win under those circumstances is somewhat rare, but not unprecedented.
The Emmys introduced guest-acting categories in 1986, and since then eight people have won on their shows’ only nomination. It happened three times in Best Comedy Guest Actor: Cleavon Little, Tim Conway and Peter Scolari.
It happened three times in Best Drama Guest Actress: Viveca Landfors, Amanda Plummer and Cloris Leachman.

“She really proves why you can win an Emmy with one scene,” Amanda Spears says about Best Drama Guest Actress front-runner Diana Rigg in an Emmy slugfest with me and fellow Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright, Zach Laws and Tom O’Brien (watch above). “Talk about going out in style; she does it amazingly well,” O’Brien adds about Rigg’s final “Game of Thrones” appearance. And Bright recalls, “When that episode aired, a lot of ‘Game of Thrones’ people were chatting about everything that’s going on in the episode, but then that scene happened at the end of the episode and that’s all anyone was talking about.”
Her episode, “The Queen’s Justice,” closes with the defeat of Olenna Tyrell (Rigg) at the hands of the Lannister army. But Olenna gets the last laugh when she confesses to Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) that she’s the one who...

We’re just a few days away now from the return of Outcast, Cinemax’s horror drama based on Robert Kirkman’s comic series of the same name, as season 2 premieres this Friday, July 20th. Co-starring Patrick Fugit and Philip Glenister, Outcast is centered around demonic forces that have taken root in Rome, West Virginia, threatening to destroy the very fabric of the tight-knit community, with Fugit and Glenister doing their very best to battle against the sinister powers at play.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with both Kirkman and Outcast executive producer/showrunner Chris Black about the upcoming season on the show, and they discussed how they mixed things up for this next run of episodes, handling storylines between the comic series (which is still going strong) and the TV series, finding the balance between the horror and the heart of the stories being told in Outcast,...

F. Murray Abraham has this year garnered his second Emmy nomination as Best Drama Guest Actor for portraying the shadowy CIA black ops specialist Dar Adal on Showtime’s “Homeland.” Abraham, who is also the recipient of an Oscar for his chilling turn as composer Antonio Salieri in “Amadeus” (1984), was previously nominated for “Homeland” in 2015, falling short to Reg E. [Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Luke Cage” Season 2, including the finale.]
“Luke Cage” series creator Cheo Hodari Coker is a longtime comic book fan, and it shows with the number of fun Easter eggs he includes in the show’s first outing. Since then, Netflix’s Marvel world has expanded, and therefore in Season 2, the show doesn’t hold back when it comes to pop culture references and full-blown crossovers. Many are obvious, but some are for diehards or eagle-eyed, pause-button-happy fans.
“Luke Cage” is the type of show that references the Avengers but never names them. It also exists in the present but feels retro thanks to the heavy ‘90s hip-hop influence and nods to the original comics when Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was drafting off the blaxploitation craze. Check out all the Easter eggs and pop-culture references we could find below, and let us know what we’re missing in the comments.

Jonathan Groff is a two-time Tony nominee for his work on Broadway, and his musical theater work even won him a Grammy. But despite a significant TV resume he has yet to be nominated for an Emmy. Now he’s a contender for Best Drama Actor for Netflix’s psychological thriller “Mindhunter.” It doesn’t hurt that the series is directed and produced by David Fincher, who has directed many nominated performances in film and TV.
Groff stars as Holden Ford, an FBI agent in the 1970s who is fascinated by the psychology of serial killers. It’s a far cry from the actor’s previous roles, like “Glee” villain Jesse St. James and lovelorn “Looking” protagonist Patrick Murray. But it’s a change of pace that could appeal to the television academy, who have nominated other G-Men before him like Kyle MacLachlan in “Twin Peaks” (1990-1991) and David Duchovny...

After the events that unfolded in season one of the hit Netflix/Marvel series “Luke Cage” we were a bit unsure of just where season two would pick up for Harlem’s hero Luke Cage, as he was certainly dealing with his new found fame on the streets and wrestling with the idea of being a super hero overall.
Deep down Luke Cage truly wants to be a normal guy, however his bulletproof skin and extreme strength certainly forced him almost unwillingly into the spotlight. In season two we find Luke Cage dealing with an increasing need to protect his beloved Harlem, while also coming to the realization that despite his abilities he doesn’t always have the ability to save everyone, especially those that do not want to be saved.

In the upcoming “Luke Cage” Season 2, the titular Marvel hero has moved out of the shadows and is now a well-known part of the Harlem community.
“This season, the stakes have risen because Luke’s expected to be a leader in a community that has a lot of problems,” series star Mike Colter told Variety. “In his way are people who think they should be able to rule Harlem as a queen, as Mariah [Dillard] would call it, whereas Luke looks at that more as a dictatorship. He sees Harlem as a democracy…It’s a completely different way of doing things, so that’s going to come to a head.”
Cage is also grappling with the fact that being a hero is great, but it ultimately does not pay the bills.

"Man, I am so sick of this shit," the bulletproof title character of Luke Cage (Mike Colter) vents about his nemesis, politician-cum-crimelord Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard). "It's always rinse and repeat with her."
By that point in Luke Cage's second season (it debuts on June 22nd), viewers will likely feel the same way – not just about Mariah, but about this whole repetitive slog, perhaps the worst offender yet of the Netflix/Marvel drama approach of filling up a 13-episode bag with only three or four episodes' worth of story at best.

Cameron Britton gave a memorable performance in the Netflix drama series “Mindhunter” as real-life serial killer Ed Kemper. Now he’s an Emmy contender for Best Drama Guest Actor for his role. But will voters embrace him or be turned off by his sociopathic character? Oftentimes the television academy — and all awards voters for that matter — tend to reward roles that are sympathetic, but there’s good news for Britton: voters in this category pick killers more often than you might think.

Mike Colter's bulletproof superhero stares down a formidable rival in the intense Season Two trailer for Marvel's Luke Cage.
The equally unshakable John McIver/Bushmaster (Mustafa Shakir) serves up Harlem's hero with a hand-to-hand ass-kicking, leaving a disoriented Cage spitting blood in his bathroom sink. Tobias Menzies said farewell to “Outlander” last season on his way to greener pastures — or, more golden pastures as least as he’s about to don “The Crown” as Prince Philip in season three of the Netflix series about the British royal family. Menzies played the devoted Frank Randall and his evil ancestor Black Jack in “Outlander” until Frank’s death last fall in the season three episode “All Debts Paid.” Now our readers think he deserves an Emmy nomination because “poor Frank is overdue for some love.” Scroll down for our complete poll results.
A whopping 93% of readers said Menzies deserves an Emmy bid for his final three episodes of “Outlander.” And it might just happen since being cast in a leading role in the Emmy winning “Crown” has raised his industry profile significantly. But he’s already been well known by his peers, even if he hasn’t always been a household name.

The diagnosis looks good for Dr. K: Gerald McRaney has the early lead in our odds to take home Best Drama Guest Actor again for “This Is Us,” which would make him the first person to win the category twice for the same role.
Only three people have won Best Drama Guest Actor twice — all for different roles: Patrick McGoohan won the very first guest award in 1975 for “Columbo: By Dawn’s Early Light” and then won again as a different character on “Columbo” in 1990. John Lithgow nabbed his first guest Emmy in 1986 for “Amazing Stories” and received his second one for his chilling work on “Dexter” in 2010. Charles S. Dutton went back-to-back — something McRaney is also trying to do — in 2002 and 2003 for “The Practice” and “Without a Trace,” respectively.
See Gerald McRaney returns to ‘This Is Us’ and makes us cry all over again — did he just win Emmy No.

Cinemax has set Friday, July 20 at 10 Pm for the Season 2 premiere of Robert Kirkman’s suspense-horror series Outcast.
The U.S. launch comes a year after the series’ second season aired on the Fox International channels.
Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming talked about the series’ future beyond a second season last fall, noting that the show is expensive, and, because its U.S. airing comes more than a year after the season was filmed, the options on the cast have long lapsed.
“I think the new season is very strong, and I hope it’s got a bit more fun and entertainment in it, and is a step forward,” Antholis told Deadline. “In success, we left open the possibility that we could have a conversation about figuring out a way to bring it back.” Because the show is so expensive, “part of the consideration in doing that will be,...

Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming talked about the series’ future beyond a second season last fall, noting that the show is expensive, and, because its U.S. airing comes more than a year after the season was filmed, the options on the cast have long lapsed.

"Does your mother know you're going down there on a Friday night?" Abramorama has released the first trailer for a hazy, indie drama titled Flock of Four, the feature directorial debut of director Gregory Caruso. The “In Memoriam” segment of the Academy Awards is guaranteed to be two things: moving and frustrating. While we laud the academy for its efforts to be even more expansive at the 2018 Oscars with the number of people to whom it pays tribute (51), it is vexing that certain famous faces were excluded. Above, watch as Eddie Vedder sings the late Tom Petty‘s “Room at the Top” as the three minute video unspools.
Among those missing from this “In Memoriam” video, the most glaring omission is 1956 Best Supporting Actress winner Dorothy Malone (“Written on the Wind”). After more than a decade as a contract player at both Rko and Warner Bros., she changed her good girl image with her searing performance as an alcoholic in Douglas Sirk’s lush drama and took home an Oscar for her efforts. She went on to headline TV’s version of the Oscar-nominated “Peyton Place.
