Later this month on August 24th, the Orange County Regional History Center will be holding a special day of presentations related to Orlando’s famed Halloween Horror Nights – including both a special effects demonstration and a speakers event with the artists and authors behind Universal Orlando Resort’s Halloween Horror Nights.
From 11Am to 1Pm, attendees will be able to meet Michael Burnett, a special effects artist whose work has been seen in such films and tv shows as Aliens, Darkman, Little Monsters, Universal Soldier, Star Trek: Voyager and many more. The special presentation will give fans and chance to learn about the secrets and techniques behind practical effects during Burnett’s special Prosthetics Demonstration as part of the Year in the Life: Backstage to Onstage at Universal Orlando Resort exhibition.

One of the things I most admire about esteemed actor Boman Irani is that I never recognize him at first in his films. He has given us roles that range from comedy, to drama to everything rolled into one and with each of these characters he puts on a completely different persona, which to me is the mark of a truly great actor. For example, though I knew he was in Don: The Chase Begins Again, when I first saw some of the stills of the upcoming Don 2 it took me a minute to realise it was Mr. Irani in the shot. Once again, he has so encompassed the character that everything about him is different, you certainly wouldn’t recognize him as the actor who played Virus in 3 Idiots, Michael Burnett in Home Delivery or Jahangir Hayaat Khan from Veera Zaara. For the sequel to Don, Mr. Irani...

The Fantasia Film Festival is officially over and we here at Sound On Sight will always remember it as the year of brilliant first time features with the likes of Bellflower, Absentia, Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, You Are Here, Beyond The Black Rainbow, Attack The Block and Retreat, to name a few. The final audience numbers are yet to be confirmed, but Fantasia estimates it has welcomed more than 100,000 audience members in the past three and a half weeks. 150 international directors, actors and producers came to present their films and we had a great time meeting new faces and drinking the nights away with some of the filmmakers. I can’t stress how fun the festival is and highly I recommend our international readers who love genre cinema to one day travel here to Montreal, and check it out.

From the Press Release: sThe festival opened with a bang with the Canadian premiere of Red State by director Kevin Smith. This was only the first in a long line of sensational special events that took place over the course of the festival. Among those was the incredible homage to the great John Landis (Burke And Hare), marked by the presentation of Fantasia’s new trophy “Le Cheval Noir.” Mirroring our strong launch, the festival closed with the Canadian premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s Don’T Be Afraid Of The Dark. Other memorable events included: the homage to André Link and John Dunning...

So I do my best to get to bed early the night before my first full day at Spain’s Sitges film festival (see first entry here), but after only five hours, I’m wide awake and unable to sleep another wink. Nonetheless, I will do my darnedest to persevere through at least three movies today.
First film on my line-up is the premiere of director Andrew Monument’s documentary Nightmares In Red, White & Blue: The Evolution Of The American Horror Film, which is screening at one of the festival’s secondary venues, the Prado, located in town. With none of the filmmakers on hand, including writer Joseph Maddrey, whose book served as the basis of the film, I’ve been asked to moderate the screening, as I am one of the interviewees in the production. Although it is 10 a.m. and no one in Sitges seems to hit the sack until 7 a.
