It’s a certainty that within any given calendar year, there will exist a small handful of films set during World War II whose plots involve resisting Nazis. Art house audiences seem especially fond of the sub-genre. Novelty tends to steer these stories. They’re filled with zookeeper’s wives, brave children who steal valuable books, and other souls whose courage stands as a beacon of hope amidst savagery. “The Exception,” the latest of these, from Tony Award-nominated theater director David Leveaux (making his feature film debut), and written by Simon Burke (“Strike Back”), based off Alan Judd’s novel “The Kaiser’s Last Kiss,...

By all accounts Kaiser Wilhelm II was hardly a great leader. He put Germany onto its fateful course towards World War I and shortly after defeat was forced to abdicate the throne into exile at the secluded Netherlands mansion Huis Doorn. Alan Judd would eventually write an historical fiction novel entitled The Kaiser’s Last Kiss about the former crown holder and an incident involving the Nazis, Gestapo, and Hitler’s right-hand Heinrich Himmler—with the potential for redemption. Christopher Plummer would read said book, let his manager know of his interest, and wait ten years before another’s option lapsed so it could fall into their hands. Simon Burke would crack the screenplay, theater director David Leveaux would be hired to helm his debut, and The Exception would be born.
Plummer takes on the role of Wilhelm, now an aged master of the mansion living on the allowance of the Reich’s pity.

Despite the fact that he’s proven lethal to nearly every project he’s participated in to date, from A Good Day to Die Hard to Terminator Genisys, Jai Courtney is inexplicably still landing plum roles left and right. Now, he’s signed on to lead drama The Kaiser’s Last Kiss, opposite the genuinely talented Lily James and Christopher Plummer.
Written by Simon Burke and based on Alan Judd’s book, the film is set in early WWII in the aftermath of the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. Double win marks the first time two films have shared Australia’s top film prize.Scroll down for full list of winners
Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner and Jennifer Kent thriller The Babadook have both won the Aacta (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Award for best film, marking the first time that two titles have shared the country’s top film prize.
The event in Sydney, hosted this year by actresses Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman, is only the 4th annual Aacta Awards but they were the result of an overhaul of the AFI (Australian Film Institute) Awards, which were established in 1969.
The two winning films could not be more different from each other. Kent’s meticulously crafted low-budget claustrophobic thriller, The Babadook, is about a single mother who battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house.

Just 48,000 people watched the two-hour premiere of Devil.s Playground on Tuesday September 9 on Foxtel.s showcase, but with repeat screenings over the next six days the audience totaled 150,000.

Comparisons with other Australian series and miniseries screened on Foxtel in recent years are difficult because Devil.s Playground airs on the movie tier, which reaches about 56% of the platform.s subscribers. Crowley said the most recent like-for-like comparison is with the drama Tangle, which it has tripled.
A sequel to Fred Schepisi.s seminal 1976 semi-autobiographical movie The Devil.s Playground, the six-hour series stars Simon Burke as a newly-widowed Sydney psychiatrist as he.s hired by the Catholic Church to counsel troubled clergy.

We’ve got a pretty awesome new clip from Strike Back Season 3 Episode 2. This clip features a high-speed car chase, where Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) are racing away from the cartel. There are a few cool cinematic shots of the cartel targeting Scott and Stonebridge with a shotgun. Bodies and coconuts hit the floor with style. You’ll just have to watch and see.
I’m still anxious to see what happens to Dalton (Rhona Mitra). Hopefully, she finishes her vengeance mission in Beirut unscathed. I’d hate to see another member of the Section 20 team bite it. Plus, it’s always good to see the Dalton, Scott, Stonebridge dynamic. Perhaps it’s just me, but I think there’s some lingering sexual tension from last season – between Dalton and our team – that needs to be shown off and worked out in true Strike Back fashion.

Screen Australia says it has not mismanaged its finances by spending its annual production funding in just six months - a state of affairs which it says reflects the strength of the local film industry.
The government screen agency revealed in mid-December 2012 that it had spent its entire annual $42 million drama production allocation due to the unprecedented number of quality feature film and television projects seeking support. The shock announcement was reminiscent of the agency's abrupt decision to cut its investment cap in 2009 while several films were mid-financed. That decision.threw several major Australian productions into dissaray including The Tree and the biggest box office hit of.2010, Tomorrow When the War Began (Omnilab Media had to increase its investment at the last minute to ensure production).
Overspending on such a scale has never occurred before, even going back to the era of Screen Australia.s predecessor funding arm, the Film Finance Corporation.

There are so many regional detectives cluttering up British television that executives have started to look abroad for inspiration. But why bother importing a foreign series and subtitling it (as BBC4 did with French crime drama Spiral) when you can simply film British actors overseas, pretending to be foreigners. First out of the gate was an English-language remake of Wallander, where Kenneth Branagh played a dour Swedish detective in a country suddenly populated by “Brits”, and now it’s the turn of late author Michael Dibden‘s Italian detective Aurelio Zen, played by the smouldering Rufus Sewell. The benefit is we get detective shows crammed with exotic scenery, with a cultural backdrop that’s unfamiliar and thus fascinating to explore. On the downside, it might take some people awhile to adjust to seeing Italians played by people who sound like they’re from the home counties, but I found myself...
