[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 6, Episode 13, “Saul Gone.”]
The final season of “Better Call Saul” has seen both death and resurrection. There’s a growing body count that’s been offset by a handful of reappearances, of characters either presumed or confirmed dead, in the life of a notorious defense lawyer on the lam. These weekly reviews have made definitive statements that a certain persona was all but cooked. They’ve also teetered on the brink of making assumptions that his one-time partner was all but marked for a death of her own.
So it’s only fitting that the series finale many assumed would carry physical and emotional carnage (as its predecessor show fit into its final hour) offers one last zig in the face of expected zags. “Saul Gone,” written and directed by showrunner Peter Gould, isn’t solely a parting tale of rebirth. But it certainly offers more...

In March 1971, Aretha Franklin took the stage at the Fillmore West in San Francisco to deliver a concert that was then turned into the Queen of Soul’s third live album. Video footage from that concert is in black and white and grainy at best, due to the technology available at the time. For the fifth episode of National Geographic’s “Genius: Aretha,” though, the talented artisans behind the limited series brought Franklin’s (played by Cynthia Erivo) vibrant voice to life in equally bright colors and textures with a recreation of her cover of Diana Ross’ “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand).”

A French thriller gets the remake treatment, starring Jamie Foxx and Michelle Monaghan. Here's our review of the rather silly Sleepless...
Constructing a decent thriller's like building a house of cards: get it right, and you have something that stands by itself. Make a mistake, and the whole thing collapses in a heap. Sleepless, a remake of a French thriller, Sleepless Night, in turn adapted from a novel by Frederic Jardin, is one of those frustrating genre films that, after half-an-hour or so of decent construction, starts to wobble before your very eyes.
The set-up is this: Jamie Foxx plays a Las Vegas cop, Vincent Downs, who's robbed a huge stash of cocaine as part of an undercover investigation into his own precinct. Determined to get their drugs back, some ruthless gangsters stab Vincent in the gut and kidnap his son as leverage. Meanwhile, Internal Affairs officer Jennifer Bryant (Michelle Monaghan...

If Sleepless doesn’t seem like it is doing anything new it’s, well, not. A remake of Frederic Jardin’s 2011 thriller Nuit blanche (Sleepless Night) rebooted as a low-rent Luc Besson-style affair with half the wit, Sleepless isn’t an unbearable experience. It’s just not a terribly original film, one that seems to suffer a fate like many Hollywood-ized imports taken on by foreign directors: they bring all the style, but leave behind the substance and wit. As often happens, something is lost in translation, even if the absurd hand-to-hand combat and action “thrills” in a contained setting remain intact.
Swedish director Baran bo Odar helms from a script by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) that, truth be told, could have been adapted into a tense little thriller in the right hands. One sequence involving a stabbing had me nostalgic for Park Chan-wook and what he might have brought to the table.

Someday, when you least expect it, you’ll hear someone singing the praises of Sleepless. Not now, but once it inevitably enters syndication rotations on TBS or Fxx. That’s where this dad-thriller is destined to find glory – playing in the background during chores or between naps. In a theater, Baran bo Odar’s darkened kidnapping thriller charges forward like a billion other Taken wannabes before it. But without investment or attentive demand? You can come in-and-out of this Sleepless Night remake without being weighed down by the heavy generics that plod with sluggish commitment. That’s not meant to be a backhanded compliment, just a realistic assessment and expectation-setter.
Jamie Foxx stars as Vincent Downs, a dirty Vegas cop who gets tangled-up with the wrong underworld bosses. His partner, Sean Cass (T.I.), hears of a 25 kilo drug shipment coming in, so the two pull an off-hours smash-and-grab heist. Unfortunately,...

The listless, shoddy sort of remake where it feels like all of the characters have already seen the movie they’re in, “Sleepless” reduces one of the best action films of the 21st century into one of the most benign. Released in 2011, Frederic Jardin’s severely under-seen “Sleepless Night” is a French-language brawler with universal appeal — bruising, relentless, and blissfully frenetic, it remains a masterclass in how to layer cinematic mayhem so that every new punch lands where the last one left off.
Needless to say, a lot has been lost in translation. Directed by Baran bo Odar (“The Silence”) and designed to swindle money from starry-eyed January theatergoers who’ve been shut out of “Hidden Figures” or “La La Land” but might as well see something because they’ve already trekked to the multiplex and paid the babysitter for the night, this lifeless photocopy proves that American exceptionalism is...

Don Draper, Barney Stinson and now, Howard Hamlin.
Better Call Saul has proven to be a juggernaut in the ratings, and now it's providing men everywhere with their newest fashion icon. On the AMC drama, Patrick Fabian plays Howard Hamlin, the rich, well-dressed lawyer with a smile so perfect you can practically hear the "ping" when you look at his photograph. Basically, Howard is everything that Bob Odenkirk's character, Jimmy McGill, aspires to be.
In episode four of the Breaking Bad prequel, fans were delighted to watch Jimmy use his large sum of hush-money to transform his wardroom from desperate and dingy into a dead-on doppelganger of Hamlin, complete with real mother-of-pearl buttons — none of that "fake plastic crap."

Open Road Films has today announced details of its forthcoming thriller, Sleepless Night, which is set to include The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s Jamie Foxx and True Detective star Michelle Monaghan in leading roles. A loose re-telling of Frederic Jardin’s French film Nuit Blanche, the Americanized take will shift the focus to the shimmering deserts and illuminated sidewalks of Las Vegas.
At the helm is German filmmaker Baran Bo Odar, who will make his English language debut with this corrupt law enforcement caper. As previously mentioned, Sleepless Night will re-invent Jardin’s original film, and focus on Foxx’s shifty Las Vegas cop. He finds himself under the gun when a crew of gangsters kidnap his son for a hefty ransom… after he stole a cocaine shipment from them. Eager to retrieve his boy, he must contend with the mobsters who don’t know he’s actually lost the...

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

It's a little surprising to hear costume designer Jennifer Bryan refer to Breaking Bad as her dream job. After all, it's not exactly Gossip Girl. But what the AMC drama lacks in fashion forwardness, it makes up for with impeccable attention to detail and character. After three seasons of creating Gothic period costumes and trendy high-school ensembles for CW's The Vampire Diaries, Bryan is delighted to join creator Vince Gilligan's world, where a single hemline or shade of green can speak volumes about a character. Vulture spoke to Bryan about Gilligan's marching orders, and how the changes in Walter, Jesse, and Skyler's lives are affecting their wardrobes. When you first met with Vince Gilligan to discuss season five, what sort of notes did you get?Vince is a very hands-on creator of the show, and so he spent a couple hours with me, and we went through the characters one by one.

The Vampire Diaries Review, Season 3, Episode 20: “Do Not Go Gentle”
Written by Michael Narducci
Directed by Joshua Butler
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on The Vampire Diaries: Mystic Falls High continues its tradition of terrible Decade Dances, Ric pulls a Bill Forbes, and Bonnie can not catch a break
It’s that time of year again- time for the teens of Mystic Falls to dust off the frankly ridiculous stash of gorgeous vintage clothes they have lying around, put on their dancing shoes, and head over to the school gym for the Decade Dance. It must’ve been a fun episode for Jennifer Bryan, the costume designer for the series, as well as the hair and makeup departments, who dress the cast to the nines. It’s notable that they don’t neglect the men- Tyler in particular gets into it and rocks his fabulous ensemble.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns with an episode where Stefan is tortured. When the producers teased earlier this year that Paul Wesley's abs will get more screen time, this would be it.
When Stefan and Damon make a dangerous new enemy, Stefan suddenly finds himself in a perilous situation. Damon and Elena try to convince Alaric to work with them to help Stefan. Those bare torsos of The Vampire Diaries' Paul Wesley and Ian Sommerhalder? You don't get those easily on TV, nope, not at all. There's a secret science to producing the shirtlessness, a precise discipline to allowing shirts to be removed easily, simply and gloriously.
From EW's interview with Jennifer Bryan, costume designer for the show:
Entertainment Weekly: "Do you ever have weird moments on the set where you have Paul trying on different shirts to see which one is going to come on or off easiest?"
Bryan: "I do, actually. It depends on the weight of the fabric, and it has to fit a certain way so if he’s pulling it off on-camera, it’s not awkward. It doesn’t look like a three-year-old trying to get out of a snowsuit. It’s done with a lot of grace. [Laughs]

Even though you know it’s not their doing, it’s easy to get a little angry with shows when they’re not on for a month. But watching this episode of Vampire Diaries reminded me of that scene from Pretty Woman. Vivian: You're late. Edward: You're stunning. Vivian: You're forgiven. And not just because we got to see that Ian Somerhalder is now cut like an opposable Ken doll. So, we began by watching a hiker get drained and stripped by Harper, the vampire that escaped from the tomb at the end of the last original episode. It was one of the weaker openings,...

At last, The Vampire Diaries returns tonight (The CW, 8 p.m. Est)! To get us through the last leather jacket-less month, we phoned costume designer Jennifer Bryan as she was out and about in Atlanta looking for pumps to talk about all the shirtlessness we were missing, the secret to buying a leather jacket (one of the excellent reader questions submitted for her), and what we have to look forward to next (Damon on a bender!). Entertainment Weekly: Let's just get right to it. The shirtlessness: Is that something that's usually in the script, or something you negotiate with the actors?...

A Vampire Diaries insider has revealed that the show's two time-frames will soon collide. In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, costume designer Jennifer Bryan said that the past and present storylines are not as separate as they may first appear. Asked if the flashbacks will become more prominent, she replied: "Yes they are [going to] and they're really stretching them out - you will start to see more of a connection between present day and flashbacks. "There is a lot of crossover in the storyline. I can't tell you any more, though - I've probably given (more)...

Melinda Clarke has been praised for her recent Vampire Diaries guest stint by a show insider. The former O.C. actress was recently cast as Matt Donovan's estranged mother Kelly for a multi-episode arc. Jennifer Bryan, who is a costume designer on the supernatural series, said that the cast and crew were "thrilled" to have her join the show. "She was a ton of fun!" Bryan told Digital Spy. (more)...

We're going through Vampire Diaries withdrawal. If we can't see a shirtless Stefan or Damon until March 25, the least we can do is talk about them with the show's costume designer, Jennifer Bryan. She's agreed to answer your questions, too, so if you've got 'em, post 'em before 3 p.m. Et Thursday. Perhaps you'll want to know her inspiration for a particular character or look. Me, I'm most curious about the mechanics: Do the scripts detail the level of heavage we're so often treated to, or is that something she and the actors feel out on their own? When a...
