A Los Angeles Superior Court Judge ruled Tuesday that Johnny Depp’s oral contract with his former talent attorney Jacob A. Bloom is invalid.
“There’s not a special rule for entertainment people,” said Judge Terry Green, according to Variety. “Why isn’t it in writing? Why not have something that memorializes the agreement so we don’t end up in court fighting like this?”
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, who last year sued his former managers The Mandel Company, has now sued his former lawyer and his firm, accusing Bloom and company of costing the actor “tens of millions of dollars” through the “unauthorized taking of Mr. Depp’s film residual and other economic rights for themselves” as well as via “conflicts of interest, self-dealing, legal malpractice” and other means.

Vanity Fair is previewing online a portion from its upcoming profile of troubled actor Charlie Sheen. Here are 2 pretty juicy excerpts, in which Sheen's manager Mark Burg recollects how Sheen closed his most recent $100 million deal for Two and a Half Men last May during a Lakers game and how the actor first met the series' co-creator/executive producer Chuck Lorre and agreed to do the show, from which he was recently fired. “Don’t ever play poker with him,” says Sheen’s manager, Mark Burg, recalling how, in 2010, he made Sheen’s $100 million deal with CBS between the national anthem and the start of a Lakers game. “Warner Bros. was like, ‘We’re offering a million dollars [per episode] for two years, and nobody walks away from $48 million.’ I said, ‘Guys, he’s going to walk. I’m not bluffing.’” Burg tells (Vf contributing editor Mark Seal) that CBS chairman Les...

Charlie Sheen's manager has defended him against Brooke Mueller's allegations the star sent her an anti-Semitic text message detailing how he wanted to "execute" his longtime representative.
Sheen's estranged wife obtained an emergency restraining order against the troubled actor on Tuesday after she was refused physical custody of the couple's twin sons in an ongoing court battle.
In legal papers, Mueller claimed she feared for her safety, as well as that of her two kids, after Sheen had reportedly threatened her, and according to the New York Daily News, she also alleged he sent her a text message branding his manager Mark Burg a "stooped jew pig".
But Burg has refused to believe his embattled client would write such an insult - because his entire team, including recently resigned publicist Stan Rosenfeld, are Jewish.
Burg tells the publication, "We've managed Charlie for 12 or 13 years, and I don't think it's a text that he would ever send.
"Charlie Sheen's entertainment lawyer Jake Bloom is Jewish. Charlie Sheen's litigation attorney Marty Singer is Jewish. Charlie Sheen's (former) publicist Stan Rosenfeld is Jewish. Charlie Sheen's ex-wife is Jewish, as are his two boys Bob and Max."
Sheen and Mueller split following a Christmas Day fight in 2009, for which the actor received a stint behind bars and an assault charge.

Brooke Mueller, in court documents, has accused Charlie Sheen of sending an anti-semitic text message about his manager, Mark Burg. Mueller alleges that Sheen wrote, "I must execute mark b like the stoopid jew pig that he is."
It's a powerful accusation, and one that Sheen denies -- he says that Mueller has a history of stealing his phone to send scandalous text messages, something that Burg, who says he doesn't believe Sheen is anti-semitic, backs up.
In a statement to RadarOnline.com, Burg said:

The explosive claims made by Brooke Mueller against Charlie Sheen are lies, according to the actor. Mueller, 33, says in a sworn statement filed Tuesday in Los Angeles court that her ex-husband once referred to his manager, Mark Burg, as a "stoopid Jew pig," which Sheen disputes, saying that Mueller manipulated text messages on his phone. "I would never, ever say that about my dear friend Mark. [Mueller] is trying to create discord," Sheen, 45, told People Wednesday. "I caught her on my phone a year ago texting. She was trying to cause discord among my immediate family. I caught her red-handed and she confessed.

While John Hughes's The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Home Alone proved to be both box-office powerhouses as well as culturally significant landmarks, his sudden death from a heart attack Thursday is proving equally noteworthy, for the shockwaves it is sending throughout the acting community that he helped to launch. Known as the "Brat Pack" - a term coined in a 1985 New York magazine feature on the then-rising Hughes and the cast of his coming-of-age comedies - the writer-director-producer's stable of fresh-faced performers included such now-household names as Sean Penn, Steve Carell, Macaulay Culkin, Matthew Broderick, Jon Cryer,...

Warner Bros. and producer Larry Gordon have set a date to figure out who's responsible for the legal fracas that led to Fox owning a piece of "Watchmen." But given the pic's lackluster boxoffice performance, there might not be much loot to fight over.
Attorneys for the two sides have agreed to meet May 13 in a confidential, nonbinding mediation before showbiz mediator Daniel Weinstein. At issue is how much, if anything, Gordon owes Warners after a judge ruled that Fox -- which initially developed the property with Gordon -- owned a distribution right to the superhero pic.
Heated chain-of-title litigation between Fox and Warners ended in a January settlement that gave Fox a cash payment and up to 8.5% of the film's proceeds, depending on how well it did. The $138 million-budgeted pic has grossed $180 million worldwide after a heavy marketing campaign.

Of all the people watching how "Watchmen" does at the boxoffice, Larry Gordon might have the most complicated feelings.
The veteran producer has an A-list backend deal on Warner Bros.' R-rated graphic novel adaptation and stands to gain financially if it becomes a hit. But if Warners has its way, Gordon also could be on the hook to Warners for a hefty percentage of the film's grosses based on his role in the legal debacle that ended with Fox owning a piece of the "Watchmen" property.
For this reason, Gordon and Warners have put off until after the $130 million Zack Snyder epic opens next Friday to resolve their standoff over what amount -- if anything -- Gordon should reimburse the studio for the cost of settling the litigation.
A clear idea of what Gordon might be liable for won't emerge until the film has largely played out, which could be a month or two,...

Production begins Monday on the sixth and final season of FX's "Nip/Tuck." As the show's actors get back to work, behind the scenes their representatives are deep in salary renegotiations.
Talks for stars Julian McMahon and Dylan Walsh and regulars Joely Richardson, Kelly Carlson and Roma Maffia have been ongoing for weeks.
Heading into production on Season 5 in summer 2007, McMahon and Walsh saw their compensation upped to about $125,000 an episode, with Richardson close behind at about $100,000.
This year, McMahon and Walsh reportedly are seeking to double their salaries, and the other cast members also are seeking substantial raises.
Because all of the show's actors are under contract with "Nip/Tuck" producer Warner Bros. TV, talks have been held primarily with FX, which funded last year's cast paycheck bumps in the form of cash bonuses. A similar arrangement is expected this year, but the sides remain apart on money terms...

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ray Liotta are answering the call for Millennium Films' Hero Wanted.
Brian Smrz will make his directorial debut with the film, which centers on a garbage collector who stages a bank robbery so he can be the hero and stop it in order to impress a girl who works at the bank. When the plan goes awry, he seeks revenge against the double-crossers. Chad and Evan Law penned the screenplay.
Shooting is set to begin next month in Bulgaria.
Richard Salvatore, Johnny Martin and David Ornston are producing. Millennium's Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson are executive producing.
Smrz worked as a second-unit director on such tentpoles as Superman Returns and X-Men before landing the Hero gig.
"I was very impressed by Smrz's creative vision and felt he would bring real style to this project," Martin said.
The Oscar-winning Gooding's most recent credits include Norbit. He next will appear in Ridley Scott's American Gangster opposite Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. He is repped by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment and attorneys Jake Bloom and Ralph Brescia.
