Exclusive: Forced to halt production after just three weeks of shooting in South Africa when the Covid pandemic struck back in March 2020, and picking up again in Romania seven months later, Around The World In 80 Days is due to have its world premiere at Canneseries on October 10.
Star David Tennant, who plays English gentleman-turned-adventurer Phileas Fogg, is expected on the Riviera to unveil the first two episodes of this mega-adaptation of the Jules Verne classic. An airdate has yet to be set, but is likely around the holidays via such outlets as France Télévisions, PBS/Masterpiece, the BBC, Rai and Zdf. Check out the first-look teaser above.
Joining Tennant in the eight-part adventure are French actor Ibrahim Koma (Oss 177) as Fogg’s irrepressible valet, Passepartout, and Leonie Benesch (The Crown) as determined journalist, Abigail ‘Fix’ Fortescue.
A Slim Film + Television and Federation co-production for the European Alliance, the series boasts a new spin on Fogg.
Life On Mars creator and 80 Days head writer, Ashley Pharoah says, “We wanted Fogg yes to be a preposterously upper middle class over-educated Englishman, but I wanted to give him a sort of childlike sense of wonder because he’s never traveled, he’s never left London or his club. As soon as I hit on that, I thought it’s a love letter to the world, if that isn’t a bit pretentious. He goes to Paris and India and Hong Kong and Yemen and he’s so excited to see a camel, the different colors and cultures. It felt like resetting our relationship with traveling and seeing the world like that.”
In terms of scoring Tennant for the lead, former Kudos boss Simon Crawford Collins, who runs Slim Film + Television, says, “We wanted somebody who could believably do the action adventure, could play the stiff-upper-lip Englishman, but at the same time you never fall out of love with him and you really want to get under the veneer of that and go, ‘Wow, this is actually a complex man.’ David manages that so brilliantly.”
Pharoah, who is also an executive producer, hints at more Fogg adventures to come. “We are in the early stages of wondering — if this goes well — if we could do it again. Taking those three characters and doing a different adventure with them.” Hopefully not under the same conditions, however, which Pharoah recalls as “a really hard shoot.”
It was also expensive, as pandemic-related issues added about £4M in costs, Crawford Collins tells Deadline. “The first lockdown was a killer, but once we got going again we felt very blessed.” Production in South Africa was originally stopped in March 2020 and picked up again in November in Romania. “In an ideal world we would have carried on filming in South Africa where our sets were, but South Africa was coming out slowly so we did the big shift to Romania,” adds the executive producer. This year, production was able to move back to South Africa and the result is “very vibrant and cinematic.”
Around The World In 80 Days counts co-production partners Masterpiece in the U.S., Peu Communications in South Africa, and Belgium’s Be-films and Rtbf. Daro Film associate produces. Seven West Media has also backed the production and will broadcast in Australia. The series has further been acquired by the BBC in the UK and Rts in Switzerland.
While there are myriad partners on the series, Crawford Collins says development and production were “very straightforward.” France Télévisions “came back saying, ‘We love this and really want to make it and we don’t want to be the secondary broadcaster.’ They wanted to be lead, so immediately put in a sizable amount of money. It was a wonderful building block and they then brought the Alliance partners on board.”
The entire process (apart from the shutdown), “was incredibly stress free… We never had any big disagreements… The specter of Europudding still sort of lives heavily in our minds and we all know those days. But I think the trouble with that is when you have a project originated just to secure financing then it really shows through. The difference is that we had a clear vision of what we wanted to say, but just knew we needed a lot of people to help fund it.”
Also starring as series regulars in 80 Days are Jason Watkins (Des) and Peter Sullivan (Poldark). Guest actors include Lindsay Duncan (A Discovery Of Witches), Dolly Wells (Dracula), Richard Wilson (Merlin), Faical Elkihel (The Spy), Anthony Flanagan (The Terror), Gary Beadle (Patrick Melrose) and Giovanni Scifoni (Doc – Nelle Tue Mani).
Around The World In 80 Days is adapted by a team of writers led by Pharoah and Caleb Ranson (Child Of Mine). Steve Barron (The Durrells) directs with Brian Kelly (Downton Abbey) and the late Charles Beeson (The Mentalist).
Federation Entertainment handles distribution rights. Exec producers are Crawford Collins for Slim, Lionel Uzan and Pascal Breton for Federation, Winnie Serite for Peu and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.

Charles Beeson, the British television director who helmed episodes of The Mentalist and worked on the upcoming adaptation of Around The World In 80 Days, has died.
Actor Jim Beaver, who collaborated with Beeson on The CW’s Supernatural among other shows, revealed the news on Twitter. Beeson’s agent also confirmed his passing when contacted by Deadline.
“Rip my great friend Charles Beeson,” Beaver wrote. “A sweeter and more gently gregarious fellow you couldn’t meet.” In reply to a question from The Mentalist executive producer Ashley Gable, Beaver said Beeson suffered a heart attack.

In this week’s jam-packed International TV Newswire, Variety catches you up on HBO’s first Danish original series “Kamikaze,” the first deal between ViacomCBS-owned broadcasters since the merger, David Tennant’s upcoming 80-day global circumnavigation, an un-scripted deal between Japan’s Nippon TV and the U.K.’s The Story Lab. Also on the mix: Eccho Rights’ newest global pickup from Sweden, U.K. Creative Content Eis Fund’s first investment, and the Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize’s jury announcement.

Many fan hearts were ruptured when not one, not two, but three big deaths rocked Supernatural season 15, episode 3 to its core.

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 3
In “we don’t play by your normal season arc rules anymore” news, Supernatural decided to kill off three major characters and not relent with tearing out fan hearts until the credits rolled over sad theme music. Let’s dive in.
The “gate” Chuck opened to hell is actually a rupture (hence the title). The title also echoes “The Rapture” another episode directed by Charles Beeson and written by Jeremy Carver. Notably, the mausoleum that the boys and Rowena go back to (same as the premiere) also says Carver above the door. Another interesting tidbit? The Rupture was written by Robert Berens, who we learned in our interview with Ruth Connell also wrote her audition sides. Some things truly come full circle.

NBC has cut a trio of freshman series.

The future of NBC’s Abby’s, A.P. Bio, The Enemy Within and The Village is “still under discussion” but Co-Chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy refused to hand out formal cancellations to the shows after they did not make NBC’s 2019/2020 schedule.
Speaking on NBC’s press Upfronts call, the pair said that no decision had been made on the shows, although sources suggest that it is unlikely that they will return to the network.
Telegdy said, “Anything that’s still on air is still under discussion, so no cancellations.”
Cheeks added, “The next season’s schedule is fluid, we want to give those shows a chance to fulfill their run and we’ll take another look at them then. Remember we program 52 weeks a year so there are a lot of slots.”

Vancouver, BC. Three weeks ago, I had a position on the 200th Episode Gala red carpet for The CW's "Supernatural," a little-show-that-could that has gone from being seemingly near cancellation a few years ago to taking a regular place as one of the network's steadiest hits. Over the course of nearly two hours of red carpet time, I had swift and efficient conversations with many of the people who make the '67 Impala that is "Supernatural" hum and purr. I talked with stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who have anchored "Supernatural" from the beginning, but also with co-stars including fan favorites Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard and Internet favorite Felicia Day, plus a trio of writers and producers. With the 200th "Supernatural" episode airing on Tuesday (November 11), I'll be running those quick Q&As in three parts, starting this this series of red carpet chats with a slew...

Despite our belief that Miles and the gang were far away from the room where Truman is about to pour mustard gas onto unwitting Willoughby residents and the Texas president, the crew uses its cunning (and a steam train, presumably) to make it back and derail Truman’s plan. This gives us one of the best one-two punches of the finale: Miles throwing down the very last spit of swordplay we’ll get from this series, and one more classic, resigned Milesism: “Run, you idiots,” he implores to the masses gathered to hear from the Texas and U.S. presidents, while firing a rifle in the air.

Revolution, Season 2, Episode 10: “Three Amigos”
Written by David Rambo & Anne Cofell Saunders
Directed by Charles Beeson
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
With a finger firmly poised on the reset button, “Three Amigos” rolls into town almost like it had never been away.
It keeps up the frequently relentless pace of the season to date. The core gang are shifted into fresh groupings and sent on their merry ways through various circumstances. Giancarlo Esposito gets to be a menacing badass. It has all the elements of a successful episode, and thankfully it doesn’t disappoint.
Miles, Monroe, and Rachel are on their merry way to Mexico in search of Monroe’s son. There are a couple of solid twists here. Just when you see the fence at the border and think “great, another immigration parable,” the rug’s pulled out from under you when you realise it’s...

Revolution, Season 2, Episode 8: “Come Blow Your Horn”
Written by Rockne S. O’Bannon
Directed by Charles Beeson
Airs Wednesdays at 8 pm (Et) on NBC
Another episode of Revolution, another set of key characters in captivity. Both Aaron and Gene find themselves guests of Dr. Horn and the Patriots (Gene is also subdued by his own family, and we’ll get to that). The act of placing its characters unwillingly under the care of enemies is a well the show draws from time and time again. While it can work effectively as a tension-building device, having our main crew fall into Patriot (or Militia, or another enemy) shackles time and time again contributes to the law of diminishing returns, especially when the more handy members of the gang bust out of their predicaments within minutes.
That said, “Come Blow Your Horn” offers some nice character beats along with the requisite action,...

Revolution, Season 2, Episode 4: “Patriot Games”
Written by Anne Cofell Saunders and Paul Grellong
Directed by Charles Beeson
Airs Wednesdays at 8 pm (Et) on NBC
The problems with “Patriot Games” start right at the teaser. Charlie is grabbing a drink alone in a bar. She’s just about to leave when a gang of burly men appear ready to commit unspeakable acts of horror on her opiate-weakened body, despite her best efforts in fighting them off. She luckily manages to escape, with the aid of Monroe. Charlie is one of just two women in the main cast, both strong characters most weeks, and yet both are subject to overt rape threats this week. Later, Rachel is also held captive, unable to stop the man intent on killing her from running his fingers across her cheek as he admits a long-held crush toward her. Directed by Charles Beeson
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
With the second half of Revolution’s first season focusing on The Tower that could turn on the power for the world at large, the leadup to this week’s season finale saw several factions descending on the place, with a group of well-trained and well-equipped individuals found to be guarding the place against those with the same intentions as Rachel Matheson and her group. This week’s episode culminates in an ultimate struggle for control and power, with several shifting alliances and one last surprise from Randall opening the door for a new antagonist in season two from an unexpected quarter in a thrilling episode.
The power shakeup that occurs throughout this episode promises some very interesting events next season.

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 16: “The Love Boat”

Revolution is not so much about bad guy-of-the-week as it is weapon of mass destruction-of-the-week. Following a nuclear threat a couple of weeks ago, the big bad facing the rebels is that of anthrax.
Needless to say, they snuff it out, but fail to advance anything in the process beyond showing that Miles Matheson is still a ruthless bastard at heart and will do whatever it takes for the greater good after threatening the anthrax manufacturer’s family.
It takes us on yet another minor sidequest to the main plot, which is some kind of struggle between the rebels and the Monroe Republic. Probably. There’s too much stuffing to really push forward the thrust of the show, and beyond the very brief heist sequence where the gang...

The show's based on the British series and is a psychological thriller which has Lee as Tanner, a New Orleans lead detective with ocular disorder which leads him to have horrifying hallucinations. With the doctor reassuring him he won't lose his sight, Tanner takes the disorder as side effects of a gift. Clive Owen starred in the original series of 1999 created by Charles Beeson. Revolution, Season 1, Episode 9: “Kashmir”
Written by Charles Beeson
Directed by Jim Barnes
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
There’s a massive problem in “Kashmir” which derails the main premise of the train-tunnel-set episode. Having the central characters hallucinate over a lack of air is one thing, but to do it in miles and miles of a tunnel system which had been open to the outside until minutes before is preposterous. It’s poor writing, and lets down what is otherwise an entertaining outing.
The hallucinations themselves give an intriguing insight into our heroes’ innermost regrets and fears. Miles frets that he’d accept an invitation to rejoin the Militia if offered to him; Aaron is wracked with guilt over the wife he abandoned. Nora has a slightly more impersonal if violent hallucination, and Charlie’s isn’t really a result of the oxygen outage, yet shows us...

Revolution takes place in a world with no electricity, which means no iPods, no CD players, no tape decks, no turntables. So it’s not easy for creator Eric Kripke to find ways to put his love of classic rock on display in the new hit post-apocalyptic show. But when the opportunity arose to feature Led Zeppelin in an upcoming episode, Kripke jumped at the chance and found a way to light up the show with a bit of rock and roll.

Revolution, Season 1, Episode 7: “The Children’s Crusade”
Written by Charles Beeson
Directed by Matt Pitts
Airs Mondays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
An oddly subdued episode, “The Children’s Crusade” feels like a placeholder episode despite some big revelations and moments. The flash-forward sequence in the teaser seems out of place, yet there are few other complaints about a solid episode.
It provides with an intriguing look at a band of hardy kids who live together without an adult. When one is captured by the Militia to be brainwashed and conscripted into a soldier, Charlie leads the charge in bringing him back in the reasonably entertaining lead story.
While it’s a spin on the bad-guy-of-the-week trope, Charlie being branded is a bold move, and should provide greater tension in the weeks ahead. The troubles that clearly lie ahead because of this is neatly foreshadowed when the kids check...

Director: Charles Beeson. Writers: Eric Kripke and Matt Pitts. Executive Producers: Jon Favereau, and J.J. Abrams. Cast: James Alcorn, Nadej K Bailey, Griffin Freeman, Billy Burke, Tracy Spiridakos, Giancarlo Esposito, Zak Orth, David Lyons and Daniella Alonso. In "The Children's Crusade," Miles (Billy Burke) and his group are again distracted from their search for Danny (Graham Rogers). This time Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) is caught up and sucked into a sob story involving several orphaned children. One in their group has been captured, Peter (Griffin Freeman), and his brother, Michael, wants him back. Rescuing Danny can pretty much be forgotten at this point. The next fourty minutes is spent in a swashbuckling episode that puts Charlie in a precarious position. This was an exciting episode despite the show's main plot moving forward ever so slowly. The children, "a hairless group of Ewoks" (Aaron), have been left alone by their parents for eight years now.

Airdate: 11/05/12 Writer: Eric Kripke Director: Charles Beeson Synopsis: After stumbling upon a group of parentless children (Or as Aaron put it, “Hairless Ewoks!”), Charlie and Miles let their conscious get the better of them by agreeing to rescue the kidnapped older brother (Peter) of the group’s de-facto leader (Michael). Revolution, Season 1, Episode 2: “Chained Heat”
Written by Eric Kripke
Directed by Charles Beeson
Airs Mondays at 10pm Et on NBC
After a too-busy pilot that shrunk six hours’ worth of plot into 42 minutes, Revolution slows things down for its second episode. If the first outing was designed to lure in hesitant viewers with action and quickfire plot developments, here the show attempts to reveal a little more about the characters’ psyches.
The structure of the episode plays well, as it bisects the central quartet and gave both duos something to do. Miles (Billy Burke) and Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) free Miles’ friend Nora and subsequently a cadre of Militia slaves. Aaron (Zak Orth) and Maggie (Anna Lise Phillips), meanwhile, set off to take Ben’s weird Usb key to Grace, though she’s facing a struggle with someone keen to take her own version of the device.

When Fringe introduced the Other Side, they broke new ground for genre fiction. Plenty of films and TV shows have toyed with the idea of alternate universes, but none have used the trope to do such in-depth character analysis or exploration of identity. Besides giving the cast fantastic opportunities to stretch themselves and demonstrate their range, the Other Side has given the series any number of intriguing storylines, not to mention doubling the character count without doubling the budget.

Nicknames for this episode- Olivia/Fauxlivia, Astrid/AUstrid
After seasons of underuse, finally Jasika Nicole gets a spotlight episode. “Making Angels” gives us our first details about Astrid and goes so far as to introduce us to her father. Nicole does well and bringing AUstrid over to hang with the gang makes for a lot of fun. Of course she and Walter get on famously, but it’s her instant camaraderie with Astrid, and vice versa, that stands out. This is the first example we’ve seen of two doppelgangers actually getting along and liking each other. It seems everyone likes Astrid- including herself.
