“Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” has been renewed for a second season at HBO Max.
The show’s 10-episode first season, which premiered in July, is described as a “coming-of-age, horror-tinged drama” that is set miles away from the original I. Marlene King-created Freeform series’ hometown of Rosewood, but within the existing “Pretty Little Liars” universe.

A new generation of liars are up to no good in the first trailer for “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,” premiering this summer on HBO Max.
A sequel to the popular 2010 ABC Family/Freeform teen drama “Pretty Little Liars” — based on Sara Shepard’s book series of the same name — “Original Sin” follows the chronology of the original show, which ran for seven seasons and 160 episodes, but focuses on a completely new set of teenagers in a new town
Bailee Madison, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Chandler Kinney and Zaria play the five main characters: Imogen, Minnie, Noa, Tabby and Faran, a group of friends tormented by “A” — an anonymous identity assumed by villains in the original series. Whereas the As from the original show harassed the girls with their personal secrets, this A is going after the friend group for the mistakes their mothers committed while they were in high school.

It seems like “A” still has a penchant for murder and torment.
On Wednesday, HBO Max released the trailer for its upcoming series “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,” revealing a masked assailant who is hellbent on making a new crop of teenagers pay for sins committed by their parents two decades ago — as well as their own.
The trailer sets the scene at Millwood High School. After experiencing a tragedy, Bailee Madison’s character stands up to her bullies and insists that she’s going to become one of the popular kids.
That is, until “A” arrives. Things start to turn dark as a student is seemingly murdered at the school dance. From there, the girls begin receiving haunting text messages and find themselves being watched at every turn.

‘Pretty Little Liars’ Villain Has a New Set of Teenage Targets in ‘Original Sin’ Teaser Clip (Video)
Just when you thought “A” was finally gone…the anonymous assailant is terrorizing a new group of girls.
HBO Max dropped a teaser for “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” on Wednesday, and it looks like moving the franchise to a streamer has made it even more creepy. The teaser begins with someone opening a jewelry box, as a music box version of the “Pretty Little Liars” theme begins to play.
Gloved hands (presumably belonging to “A”) pin a police report and a few photos to a cork board. The the music quickly becomes distorted, and a demonic voice whispers the familiar words: “Got a secret, can you keep it?”
As the music descends into madness, the gloved hands slice a portrait of Bailee Madison in half and shred a missing persons report for another girl named Minnie “Mouse” Honrada. The trailer ends on another ominous lyric from the theme song:...

Bailee Madison has been cast in a lead role in HBO Max’s upcoming “Pretty Little Liars” reboot, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The “Good Witch” actress will star as Imogen, who is described as “a true survivor” by HBO Max. “Like all of the Liars, Imogen is a final girl. She will drive the mystery of uncovering ‘A’ as she fights for her life and the lives of her friends.”
She will star opposite Chandler Kinney and Maia Reficco, who were announced as the show’s first two leads earlier this month.
Titled “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin,” the series is set within the same universe as the Freeform hit but centers on a different set of characters in a new town. The project is the fourth entry in the “Pretty Little Liars” franchise, following the flagship series (which ran for seven seasons) and the short-lived spinoffs “Ravenswood” and “Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists.

There are numerous ways to get a book to screen: by gut instinct, by pre-emptive calculation, by sheer luck. But the best ones may be those done the right way for the right reason, out of pure passion. Case in point: “Bel Canto,” which hits theaters today.
The novel, by Ann Patchett, became a best-seller not long after it was published in 2001. It tells the harrowing tale of an opera star and others of different nationalities being held hostage in a mansion in an unnamed South American country. Even (or perhaps especially) after 9/11, people continued to read this tale of terrorism. What is rather amazing is that it has taken over 16 years to be adapted to the screen.
Not that someone wasn’t trying throughout those years. When producer Caroline Baron read the novel, she instinctively believed she was the one to turn it into a movie. She had produced...

Screen Media picked up the North American rights to Paul Weitz’s “Bel Canto,” the company announced Tuesday.
The film, which Weitz and Anthony Weintraub adapted from the best-selling 2001 novel by Ann Patchett, stars Julianne Moore as a famous American soprano who travels to South America in the 1990s to give a private concert at the birthday party of a wealthy Japanese industrialist (Ken Watanabe) — and then gets caught in a hostage situation.
The cast also includes Sebastian Koch, Christopher Lambert, Ryo Kase, Tenoch Huerta, and María Mercedes Coroy.

Opera star Renée Fleming contributes vocals to the film — whose story is based on the real-life hostage crisis at the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru in 1996-97. Patchett’s book also inspired Jimmy López’ 2015 opera “Bel Canto” as well as a parody in the second season of the FX animated comedy “Archer.”
A national theatrical release is planned for September 2018.

Documentarian Matthew Heineman is the front-runner to win his second Directors Guild Award in three years thanks to his tense film “City of Ghosts.” That’s according to the combined predictions of more than 1,200 users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby in advance of the DGA ceremony on Saturday night, February 3. But for Heineman to win again he’ll have to get past a few legendary filmmakers: Steve James (“Abacus: Small Enough to Jail”), Errol Morris (“Wormwood”) and Ken Burns (“The Vietnam War”).
Heineman previously won Best Documentary Director for “Cartel Land” (2015), in which he explored the tension between drug cartels, Mexican groups fighting back against cartel violence and border patrol agents monitoring the crossing between Mexico and the United States. Heineman’s latest film is also about a group resisting violence in their homeland: “City of Ghosts” profiles the Syrian citizen journalists who make up the group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.
