Two young women uneasily living in a religious community in Quebec embark on a secret affair
There’s some soap-operatic gusto to this story of two teenage gay women in a Jehovah’s Witness community in Quebec; it’s got something of Jeanette Winterson’s tenderness, if not exactly the wit, and the movie is interesting and even faintly subversive in its implied analogies concerning conversion and enclosed behaviour systems.
Anwen O’Driscoll brings some Anna Kendrick energy to the role of Jaime, a smart teen whose mum suffers a breakdown after the death of her dad from a heart attack. She has been sent away to live with her aunt Beth (Liane Balaban), who with her husband Jean-François (Antoine Yared), is a devout Jehovah’s Witness and expects Jaime to obey their rules and show up to their religious services wearing the very uncool Handmaid’s-Tale dress they’ve picked out for her.

As long as religion is so preoccupied with queerness, queer artists must reckon with religion. While the closeted zealot trope may be played out at this point, it seems every sect wants its shot at the clandestine queer romance. Of course, there is plenty of Sapphic fun to be mined from the queering of rituals, sacrifice, and self-flagellation, as with the sensual tension of recent entries like “Disobedience” or the outrageous heresy of “Benedetta.” More somber entries into the sub-genre include 2018’s conversion therapy duo of “Boy Erased” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”
Amidst such a crowded field, the Jehovah’s Witness drama “You Can Live Forever” doesn’t quite stand out, short of opening a door into one of the lesser explored religious sects. Though the well-crafted film makes use of a unique regional setting for some moving moments, its straightforward approach to well-worn territory offers few surprises.

"You're in the deep end now... I hope you can swim." 101 Films has revealed a new official US trailer for an indie film from Canada titled A Small Fortune. This originally premiered a few years ago and it already opened in Canada in the fall of 2021, but is only now getting its US release if anyone still wants to watch. From writer / director Adam Perry, adapting his award-winning short film A Blessing from the Sea (2017). When a desperate man finds a bag of lost money off the shores of Prince Edward Island, his decision to keep it secret turns his quaint fishing village into a growing crime scene. Everyone knows that finding a bag of money always leads to more problems and violence. The film stars Stephen Oates, Liane Balaban, Joel Thomas Hynes, Andrea Bang, and Matt Cook. This looks like it has solid production value, but will the...

"Thank you for choosing us to be your witnesses." Have a look at the official trailer for this indie LGBTQ drama from Canada titled You Can Live Forever, which originally premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year. When lesbian teen Jaime is sent to live in a Jehovah's Witness community, she falls hard for a devout Witness girl and the two embark on an intense affair with consequences that will reshape the rest of their lives. When their attraction becomes too obvious to hide, the community moves to separate the two, forcing them each to make a terrible choice between faith and love. The film stars Anwen O'Driscoll & June Laporte as Jaime & Marike, Liane Balaban, Deragh Campbell, Tim Campbell, Antoine Yared, and Hasani Freeman. I just hope this film is properly critical of religion, because it doesn't help to hide the truth about how destructive & deadly these institutions often are towards freedom of expression.

As the film opens the couple gets a package of baby things from Rachel’s mother. They belonged to Rachel’s sister Vivian who lost both her baby and her husband under strange circumstances. Why her mother would send them and why they would actually use them is one of life’s great mysteries.

"She's strong… but she's not as strong as faith." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Lullaby, directed by the Dp / filmmaker John R. Leonetti - who doesn't exactly have the most impressive filmography. Landing in theaters in just a few weeks. A new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith — from the Hebrew phrase "Lilith-Abi" which translates to "Lilith, begone." Lullaby stars Oona Chaplin, with Rámon Rodríguez, Liane Balaban, Kira Guloien, and Moni Ogunsuyi. This looks like a mostly derivative, generic horror without anything new to offer us. I feel like some of these exact shots have been in other films before this. It still might have a few good scares? ›››

Back in February of 2020, right before the world shut down for a while, it was announced that John R. Leonetti, director of the horror films Annabelle, Wolves at the Door, Wish Upon, and The Silence, had signed on to direct the folklore-inspired horror movie Lullaby for Alcon Entertainment, with Game of Thrones‘ Oona Chaplin attached to star. Lullaby has since made its way through production and is now ready to be released. Deadline reports that Vertical Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights and will be giving Lullaby a theatrical and VOD release on December 16th.
Scripted by Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell, Lullaby centers on a new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith.

High school is often an angsty, unpredictable time, but even more so under the pressure of a strict religious community. Perhaps it’s easier if you’re born into it, but for outsider Jamie (Anwen O’Driscoll), at the center of “You Can Live Forever,” the claustrophobic nature of her aunt and uncle’s Jehovah’s Witness community is almost too much to bear.
It all feels so alienating and strange until she meets Marike (June Laporte), who promises to show her the Truth.
“You Can Live Forever” is the debut film of writer-directors Mark Slutsky and Sarah Watts, the latter of whom grew up gay in a Jehovah’s Witness community in Canada. Though the film is not autobiographical, it touches on much of the discomfort, repression and ultimate hope felt by those struggling with their feelings under a repressive religious atmosphere.

Canada has a wealth of cinematic talent, and always has. From our comedic genius to our often cerebral approach to filmmaking, this country has a lot to be proud of.
Of late, and especially this year, Canada has really dominated the movies landscape. Our homegrown actors (Sarah Gadon, for example) and directors (Xavier Dolan, "Mommy") have been everywhere, earning accolades around the world. Movies shot within our borders have won rave reviews and received praise from the highest-ranked critics and film festivals.
Perhaps most outstanding is our growth. No longer are we satisfied with melancholic snow landscapes (though sometimes those still appear); we've branched out, and we're trying new things. Here, in no particular order, are my favourite Canadian movies and moments of 2014.

Only ten years have passed since Canadian comedy Seducing Doctor Lewis was released, and yet now comes a remake in the form of Don McKellar’s The Grand Seduction. It’s not the first time that a screenplay by Ken Scott has been recomposed for a more luminous cast, having been the man behind Starbuck – and then its Vince Vaughn reimagining, Delivery Man. Sadly, this is also not the first time that such an endeavour has seemed somewhat superfluous.
Set in the intimate harbour of Tickle cove, we shine a light over a washed up society, struggling to make ends meet as the residents all collect their welfare cheques, with so few job opportunities available to them. However when a new factory is proposed to the locals, they realise that for it to become a reality, they need to have a doctor – and so when Dr. Lewis (Taylor Kitsch) arrives for a month,...

Brendan Gleeson is perfectly cast in The Grand Seduction, a comedy drama that aims to send up the postcard image of rural life. Unfortunately, Canadian director Don McKellar falls into his own trap with a storytelling style that wavers between wry cynicism and twee romanticism.
American muscle-head Taylor Kitsch (Battleship, John Carter) loses some of that action hero bulk to play Dr Paul Lewis, but he still looks out of place in a small fishing village where he is forced to act as Gp after getting caught with cocaine at customs. Just the name, Tickle Cove, is enough to conjure a picture of seaside tranquillity, but on the contrary, the fishing business has dried up and its residents need to find an alternative source of revenue...

The Grand Seduction
Starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, Liane Balaban, Gordon Pinsent, Mark Critch
Directed by Don McKellar
Written by Michael Dowse and Ken Scott
Canada, 2014
One has to acquire a taste for eccentric dramedies that are populated by infectious quirky characters, a far-fetching premise, gentle-minded absurdity and an appreciation for the small-scale cinema experience to embrace the giddy gumption of director Don McKellar’s odd yet highly-spirited The Grand Seduction. Breezy, mildly confusing and charmingly off-kilter The Grand Seduction is an English-language Canadian film that tickles the funnybone in its cheeky conviction detailing the desperate economical times of a financially-strapped Newfoundland fishing village.
Now American television audiences in particular may inevitably view the witty Seduction as a knockoff to the critically-acclaimed early 1990′s series Northern Exposure where the off-base, fish-out-of-the-water quirks and kooky culture shock of revolving personalities co-existing in a quaint scenic hamlet may seem grudgingly familiar. Taylor Kitsch’s film career did not get off to the best of starts in 2012, when John Carter, Battleship and Savages all disappointed at the North American box office. However, the actor, who shot to fame with his role as Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights, chose wisely to try his hand at some smaller projects with more refined stories. He has two films set for May, the HBO drama The Normal Heart with Julia Roberts and Mark Ruffalo, and the film festival favourite The Grand Seduction, a Canadian comedy from director Don McKellar (Last Night).
The Grand Seduction feels like a modest, charming crowd-pleaser that will hopefully not get trampled over by blockbuster behemoths when it comes out on May 30th. In the remake of a 2003 French-Canadian film, Kitsch plays Dr. Paul Lewis, employed by the small Newfoundland town of Tickle Bay. Since the tiny, beleaguered population wants to...

If you are a member of the Brendan Gleeson fan club (and really, who isn’t?), then this summer should be a blast for you. While you are most likely aware of his upcoming film “Calvary,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to solid buzz and comes out this August, you may be surprised to learn that he co-stars in yet another comedy this year. That film would be “The Grand Seduction,” which finds Gleeson starring alongside Taylor Kitsch. And a new trailer has arrived. This indie comedy from Canada takes place in a fictional town in Newfoundland, where the townspeople are looking for a doctor who will take permanent residence so that they can obtain a contract in order to build a new factory. Taylor Kitsch plays the doctor and Gleeson is a resident of the village who leads the campaign. The rest of the cast includes Gordon Pinsent,...

While you're being bombarded by the explosions, monsters, robots, and superheroes of the summer box office, there may come a point when you need a good palate cleanser. For me, the best films to fit that mold are light, airy, and fun indie dramas or comedies and it looks like The Grand Seduction will fill that need graciously. Starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, and Liane Balaban, the story is a familiar one, especially if you've ever seen Doc Hollywood or Funny Farm, in which a small...

While aware that there is another Maniac review here on Nerdly, I felt the urge to review it myself after sitting down with the movie for the second time and being filled with the need to unleash words.
The original Maniac hit our screens in 1980 with Joe Spinell sludging up our televisions with his disturbingly dirty portrayal of Frank, the scalp obsessed nut-job with a heart of mould. It was a great horror movie with a fantastic lead performance and top notch gore courtesy of the maestro of visceral explosions, Tom Savini, who also has a small but memorable part in the original film.

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.
Amongst the many, many films making their presence felt out in Toronto will be Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated 12 Years a Slave, which launched a powerful first trailer earlier in the month. The film sees Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a fantastic cast, with Michael Fassbender returning to work for his Hunger / Shame director, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, and many more.
Opening the festival will be Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and Stanley Tucci.

More from the Garden State: De Rosa Searchs For Romantic Eccentricities
Director Carlo De Rosa’s debut feature is yet another addition to the long list of films about a down-on-his-luck guy who falls for a quirky girl who miraculously gets him out of his comfort zone and saves him from a life of loneliness. Finding Joy is plagued with cliches so much that it would be easy to refer to it as Garden State 2.0 or Seeking a Friend for the End of the World minus the imminent, probably redemptive, destruction of the planet. In fact, the two protagonists uncannily resemble Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. De Rosa desperately tries to create the illusion of having well-developed characters by adding random eccentricities to each one of the supporting roles.
The premise is basic. Kyle (Josh Cooke) is a writer who hasn’t found much success and must go back home...

Liane Balaban made an impression as Dustin Hoffman’s sweetly sad, set-to-wed daughter in “Last Chance Harvey,” and will be recognizable to plenty of folks from her recurring role on the small screen’s “Supernatural.” In her latest film, however, Balaban gets to channel a wild, daffy femininity whose unhinged, slightly damaged siren call will strike a chord of familiarity in many a guy. In the vein of “Mad Love” and “Sweet November,” “Finding Joy” finds disillusioned author Kyle (Josh Cooke) returning home and having to cope with various indignities tossed his way by his estranged father (Barry Bostwick) and new stepmother (Lainie Kazan), when he meets Balaban’s spunky bohemian title character.
