Independent distributer Second Sight is re-releasing two cult Afro-American urban films, Juice and South Central this Monday. As both films deal with similar subject and were released in the same year, a joint review seemed appropriate. Both films are about young black Americans struggling to beat the cycle of violence that threatens their lives and their cultures.
Juice
Stars: Omar Epps, Tupac Shakur, Jermaine ‘Huggy’ Hopkins | Written by Ernest R. Dickerson, Gerard Brown | Directed by Ernest R. Dickerson
Juice boasts an impressive cast, including the likes of Omar Epps (best known as House’s Dr Foreman), Samuel L Jackson, Queen Latifah and, best of all, late rap legend Tupac. The film follows a group of four school-skipping friends in Harlem, all of whom are fairly dopey, huggable hip-hoppers, rather than violent gang-bangers. Q (Epps) dreams of becoming a superstar DJ and auditions for a prestigious competition. Bishop (Tupac) however, wishes...

It's a tough life being a committed fan of British thespian Sean Bean, much of which can be brutal and frequently crushing. It's a cold existence, marked by long stretches of harsh, barren wilderness and punctuated by episodes of wailing despair and bleak, existential darkness from which there can often seem to be no respite. It's a lot like Cormac McCarthy's The Road, only less jolly. But you make do. A classically trained Shakespearian actor of substantial ability, Sean Bean's weathered physicality and gruff, Sheffield accent has seen him forever sidelined to the fringes, playing hardcases (Outlaw), headcases (The Hitcher), and rent-a-villains (National Treasure), occasionally managing to score a truly great role (Richard Sharpe, Boromir, John Dawson) along the way. This, sadly, is not one of those roles. Although, to his credit, Bean makes a far better fist of it than such pedestrian material typically permits.

The first tip off that Ca$h is probably going to be a terrible movie is that it's got a goddamn dollar sign in its title. The second tip off is probably Sean Bean (oh, cram it -- the guy's a B-actor and doesn't even deserve that), and the third tip-off? Well, it's starting to look like Chris Hemsworth.
Hemsworth is supposed to be the next Sam Worthington, the dude, the man. The end-all-be-all, the A-list fuck-bunny extraordinaire. He's cast as Thor; he's in Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods; and he's the star of the Red Dawn remake.
And he looks like a Cinemax actor. It could just be that he's working with a bad director here (Stephen Milburn Anderson), but the guy who once looked like a legitimate future star in Star Trek looks like the next Thomas Jane. Let's just hope that Thor isn't his The Punisher,...

Before local talent Chris Hemsworth was picking up leading roles in big-name Hollywood pictures, he starred in a Us film called CA$H, a psychological thriller that is set for a small theatrical Us release, before hitting DVD. Writer and director of CA$H, Stephen Milburn Anderson (South Central), said he recognised Hemsworth's star quality immediately. "Chris had been in the Us only a few weeks when he auditioned for CA$H. We saw immediate potential in him, and CA$H became his first film. We knew he was going to be a star." It seems Anderson made a rather accurate prediction with the former Home & Away star proving he's got the goods to make it in Hollywood.
