Starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the 1997 film Men In Black was a huge hit upon its release, earning critical and commercial success, which was followed by two sequels along with a stand-alone fourth installment. However, crafting the intricate world of aliens and secret agents proved a formidable challenge for the creators.

In a 2022 oral history of Men In Black discussion, director Barry Sonnenfeld, production designer Bo Welch, and screenwriter Ed Solomon reflected on the process of making the movie and revealed how they spent close to $1 million on an animatronic bug, ultimately abandoning its use in the final cut.

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

Did Beauty kill the Beast? Or was it the other way around? Or maybe they lived happily ever after? Writer-director Caroline Lindy plays with classical expectations in her enjoyable debut feature Your Monster. Actress Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) is just out of surgery when the film starts. We quickly learn she’s survived some unnamed cancer and, in the tough year of treatments, her theater-director boyfriend of five years Jacob (Edmund Donovan) broke up with her. To make matters worse, he also moved forward with producing a Broadway musical that they developed together, one with a lead role he’d promised to Laura.
Her only friend is fellow actress Mazie, played well by Kayla Foster, who lifts up a thinly written supporting character. Mazie’s unreliability leaves Laura alone in her transient mother’s New York City apartment, crying and eating pies. Until, that is, an upstairs neighbor reveals himself.

Many actors find early success in the horror genre. Jennifer Aniston battled an evil, pun-loving Irish creature in "Leprechaun" years before she landed "Friends," for example. Charlize Theron's first role came in "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest." Even "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" boasted not one, but two future Oscar winners in its cast, Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger.
That said, not everyone manages to go on to achieve that same level of success. For every Michelle Williams ("Halloween H20: 20 Years Later") and Leonardo DiCaprio ("Critters 3"), there are countless horror stars whose careers don't reach the same level of renown. It can be especially interesting to look back at teen horror films, which often feature ensemble casts, to see who made it and who didn't. The actors on this list all have respectable careers, and most are still working in Hollywood; they simply never...

Prince Edward, the new Duke of Edinburgh, has opened a sound stage at Sky Studios Elstree. Last Thursday, he toured the site, meeting local charity partners and young talent, before unveiling a plaque on Stage 5 to commemorate the significant moment for the UK’s film and TV sector as it marks the largest brand-new studio facility to open in the UK for decades. Sky Studios Elstree will house 13 sound stages and Sky has said it will generate an additional £3B ($3.6B) of production investment in the UK creative sector during its first five years. The brick-and-mortar cinema, located in Fayetteville, is aiming to open its doors in 2024. It’s the chain’s first venue in Arkansas and 39th location in the country.
“Our mission at Alamo Drafthouse is to preserve, celebrate, and innovate the cinema experience,” says Alamo Drafthouse CEO Shelli Taylor. “Drive-in theaters deeply influenced the Alamo Drafthouse preshow, programming, and design from the very beginning, but we have never managed to incorporate a permanent drive-in into any of our theaters. The 2023 Sundance Film Festival ruled the scene this week, as A-list stars and aspiring newcomers all trekked to the mountains of Utah to stake their claim to being a part of independent cinema’s biggest showcase. That left Hollywood a bit on the quiet side, but two of the world’s biggest names (Harrison and Oprah) introduced their new TV shows with big bashes in Tinseltown.

Every year, around 20 of the world’s most influential public broadcasters get together to discuss the issues of the day such as the challenge from global streaming platforms, rights and the very purpose of their existence. The Public Broadcasters International conference is part-debate, part-agenda setting and part-pep talk in truth.
Last week, the Global Task Force — which comprises the BBC, France Télévisions, Kbs, CBC/Radio Canada, the ABC, Zdf, Rnz and Svt — headed to Tokyo for the latest confab. Once there, CBC/Radio-Canada CEO and President and Global Task Force Chair Catherine Tait delivered an impassioned rallying cry to her Psb colleagues.
Her focus was on building a “united global voice” for public service media, with the speech ending: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others. Alone — faced with the reach and heft of the global players — we risk losing our audiences.

Beginning with the publication of Whitley Streiber's book "Communion: A True Story" in 1987, alien abduction lore began to spread in earnest through the minds of the public. Streiber's book, and the growing popularity of alien imagery, were part of a cultural obsession with extraterrestrial kidnappings which broke open in earnest with the debut of "The X-Files" in 1993. Embedded in the wave of pop alien lore were tales of Men in Black, sinister government agents who wore black suits, ties, and hats, and who would arrive at the doorsteps of alien abductees, hypnotically intoning that they needed to keep their abduction a secret.
By 1997, when Barry Sonnenfeld's hit film "Men in Black" was released in theaters, such previously staid and hushed lore was transformed into broad comedy. "Men in Black" was about, essentially, Earth's immigration office, assembled to document space alien immigrants visiting or moving to our planet. Agents K...

Australia’s ABC network has bid farewell to one of its most popular presenters with Leigh Sales signing off after 12 years at the helm of its flagship news programme 7.30.
A former Washington correspondent and host of Lateline, Sales has been working 12-hour days in that time and told Guardian Australia she was looking forward to having a six-month break while she considered her next move.
7.30 broadcasts nightly on ABC and ABC News at 7:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. While happy to step off the spinning news wheel after so long, Sales is understood to be looking at other options within the BBC with no wish to move to a commercial rival.
Her job on 7.30 has seen her interview everyone from the late cricketing great Shane Warne to Paul McCartney the Dalai Lama.
ABC executives turned out to wish her farewell on an evening that coincided with celebrations for the ABC’s 90th birthday.

The two standouts in the makeup and hair races for imagination and glam are definitely “American Horror Story: Hotel” (limited series) and “The Wiz Live!” (special).
“Ahsh” was like Halloween every day with a gallery of ghouls ranging from Lady Gaga’s fashionista vampire, the Countess, to Alex Ward’s creepy Addiction Demon with his drill bit dildo, to Denis O’Hare’s scene-stealing transgender bartender, Liz Taylor.
Meanwhile, “The Wiz” upped the live musical for TV by blending the Broadway show and movie into a new urban experience.
Lady Gaga’s 111-year-old Countess was the centerpiece for both makeup designer Eryn Kruger Mekash and hairstylist Monte Haught. Gaga had the opportunity to show off 65 glam looks throughout the 20th century. The actress’ personal makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, collaborated with Mekash on the designs, and Mekash’s husband, Mike, did all of the blood-related prosthetics.

For makeup designer Eryn Kruger Mekash, every day was like Halloween on “American Horror Story: Hotel,” with a gallery of ghouls ranging from Lady Gaga’s fashionista vampire, the Countess, to Alex Ward’s creepy Addiction Demon with his a drill bit dildo, to Denis O’Hare’s scene-stealing transgender bartender, Liz Taylor.
Plus, there was an assortment of victims— most of them junkies— either sewn together or to the mattress of a bed, requiring challenging prosthetics.
“We had a lot of blood gags this season— more sliced throats than we usually do,” Mekash said. “So getting all those rigged and keeping the challenges of actual production up was a lot of work. They shot two or three episodes a day with three units, which meant a lot of prosthetic organization.”
The 111-year-old Countess runs the mysterious Hotel Cortez in Hollywood, and Gaga had the opportunity to show off 65 glam looks throughout the 20th century. The actress’ personal makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, collaborated with Mekash on the designs, and Mekash’s husband, Mike, did all of the blood-related prosthetics.
“She was turned into a vampire in the late ’20s, so we established all of the looks with Rudolph Valentino and his wife, Natacha Rambova [the costume and set designer],” Mekash recalled. “We saw ’30s makeup and the ’70s, which was her big heyday with disco, and then there was a time in the ’80s with Angela Bassetts’ character [Ramona Royale]. Then we had the modern-day stuff, which was incredibly glamorous.”
Speaking of Bassett’s Royale, her look ran the gamut from Diana Ross in “Mahogany” to various Blaxploitation actresses.
But, of course, Gaga’s Countess wasn’t the only vampire. There was also the young brother and sister. “I wanted to keep the vampire children subtle with pink, shiny makeup with dark circles to make it seem like there was extra blood in their bodies,” added Mekash.
The biggest challenge was The Addiction Demon, which took four-and-a-half hours to apply each day with a team of three artists. Created by Dave Anderson of Afx, he was wrapped in layers of sheets and covered in transparent jelly.
“Initially, it was all foam with prosthetics underneath, and there were layers and layers of silicone and also silicone liquid that could be made into sheets,” Mekash explained. “There was a chest piece and arm pieces and a facial mask that was glued down. Alex was covered from tip to toe— it was almost total sensory deprivation.”
For Liz Taylor, O’Hare endured a total body shave and showed off gold, red, black and blue sets of nails throughout the season.
“His look was patterned after Taylor in ‘Cleopatra’ and the eye makeup was inspired by an old bartender that [creator] Ryan Murphy met a long time ago,” Mekash said. “It was the first time that Denis ever wore such makeup.”

Here in the UK, when it comes to zombie and infection films, we are mostly treated to comedic entries such as Shaun of the Dead, Doghouse and Cockneys vs Zombies. Don’t get me wrong, the films mentioned have their own merits, but am I the only one who is sick of films of the like going in that direction? Of course, films like 28 Days Later and Doomsday brought something new to the table and replaced cheap gags with genuine tension and atmosphere. It’s been a long time since I have seen a great example of the genre like that here in good old, bloody Blighty. When I first caught wind of the latest offering of its kind...

As a child of the 1980s, I was practically raised on Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I saw my first one, Dream Master, at age eight, when my friend’s parents weren’t home. I was hooked. Nancy Thompson was the epitome of the strong, smart teenager, a character which was not portrayed often enough in films (and still isn’t), so it was no surprise that I looked up to Nancy and the actress who portrayed her, Heather Langenkamp. What did surprise me was hearing how she never felt like she was “famous!”
It was my honor to chat with Heather about the epic, four-hour documentary Never Sleep Again, which explores every single entry into the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. In addition to starring in the documentary and doing the voice over, Heather was an executive producer on the project. We spoke about gathering players from the Nightmare universe to participate,...

As wonderful as it would be to say “Best Original Screenplay” is also where The Cabin In The Woods has been passed over (it has, but let’s be realistic), there’s something glaring in the fact that the brilliant Drew Goddard-directed horror film received no nod for its Makeup/FX work. This 2013 iteration, honoring the best of 2012 film finds a mere three pictures nominated for Makeup (Hitchcock, The Hobbit, Les MISÉRABLES). As you well know, following the summoning of the Buckners, the zombie redneck torture family, The Cabin In The Woods positively explodes with stunning creature work in its second half, and a great deal of it is practical; makeup, puppetry and suits. What’s more, having spoken with supervisor and designer David LeRoy Anderson in an extensive chat, the intensive process which saw components in both California and Vancouver come together, which saw strategizing and creating teams...

As wonderful as it would be to say “Best Original Screenplay” is also where The Cabin In The Woods has been passed over (it has, but let’s be realistic), there’s something glaring in the fact that the brilliant Drew Goddard-directed horror film received no nod for its Makeup/FX work. Well, it doesn’t look like the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of the Mass Effect trilogy is coming to our screens any time soon. The production companies have been very quiet lately about the project, even more so about their development of Mass Effect 4. Yet for those of you who can’t wait for your next trip into the Mass Effect Universe, we may have found the next best thing - Archangel.
Preliminary predictions from the teaser trailer suggest that the film would be from the perspective of a mysterious Blue Suns Turian who was featured heavily. Yet I have it confirmed from the fan-film’s creator himself, Acavyos, that the film will indeed be focused on Garrus Vakarian and what’s more, there is even the possibility that Brandon Keener himself (the original voice actor for Garrus) may be getting involved, but this remains unconfirmed. Garrus is the young disillusioned...

As the Academy Award Nominees were announced, Best Animated Feature delightfully saw the inclusion of both Frankenweenie and Chris Butler Sam Fell's Paranorman, two loving, handmade children's tales of the macabre. Burton, speaking about the nomination, said, "Frankenweenie is a very personal film for me. The idea of telling a feature length version was in the back of my mind for many years. Stop Motion was the perfect medium for this project, and one I've always loved for its expressiveness and dimensionality. I've worked with so many incredible artists: animators, cast members, set builders, and puppet makers, all who have helped bring this film to life one frame at a time. I'm so honored that the Academy has recognized this film as one of its nominees."
Also on the Fango front was #319's cover story, Quentin Tarantino's brilliant and rousing spaghetti southern Django Unchained, which pulled in a Best Picture nomination,...

The Oscars are just over two months away, and the awards season is in full swing as we head towards the end of the year.
We’ve had the shortlists in a handful of categories already – Best Animated Feature, Best Visual Effects, Best Documentary, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song – and now the Academy have announced the shortlist for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Competing for the final list of nominees will be:
HitchcockThe Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyLes MisérablesLincolnLooperMen in Black 3Snow White and the Huntsman
Back in 1997, Men in Black took home the same award for Rick Baker and David LeRoy Anderson, and Richard Taylor and Peter King did the same six years later on The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
All other contenders are original films, with immaculate makeup and hairstyling. And it’s brilliant to see that Rian Johnson’s Looper is...

Heather Langenkamp is a remarkable woman. She is best known for playing Nancy Thompson, the lead in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Her portrayal of a teenager being attacked in her dreams, then for real by a dead, severely burned, child murderer was nothing short of groundbreaking for that era. At a time when the vast majority of scream queens in horror films of that time period were either playing the helpless victim or the eye candy, Heather’s “Nancy” was a strong, no-nonsense fighter who wouldn’t roll over and die. She took on the plight of teenagers in America, helping to portray them as strong and self-reliant, and showing they need to be heard and understood.

Here's a fun concept trailer for a zombie film called Delta Zulu. It was created by a little production company called Warehouse 1904, and here's the synopsis:
Humanity has survived what seemed to be the apocalypse, but a threat still remains. Delta Zulu follows Clark, a freelance reporter who will be amongst the few civilians ever allowed into a Red Zone, a lawless quarantined area that still breathes war. Clark has been embedded with a team of mercenary contractors from White Shield International, one of the thousands of Private Military Companies that travel into The Zone on a daily basis to fulfill contracts for the government, large corporations, and private individuals. Clark attempts to find a story amongst a group of forgotten soldiers in a forgotten war and gets more than he bargains for.
The movie looks good, and they've been working on it for a few years. I think you might enjoy it,...

While we'd hardly call anything having to do with Star Trek horror, that doesn't mean we won't take a minute to let you know that one of our favorite genre actors will be boldly going where no man has gone before!
In a recent interview with Dread Central's Alex Divincenzo for HorrorNews.net, A Nightmare on Elm Street scream queen Heather Langenkamp revealed that she has a role in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness. Langenkamp worked on the film's special effects alongside her husband, David LeRoy Anderson's, Afx Studio, and she also landed herself a small part.
Good on ya, Heather! You may wanna stay away from any aliens with finger knives, though. You just never know!
