Doc NYC is running from Nov. 12-19
With 2015 nearly complete, and awards season in full swing, one would have to imagine that festival season has all but ended, with just a handful of Christmas Day releases waiting in the proverbial wings, fans champing at the bit to lay their eyes upon films from names like Quentin Tarantino and David O. Russell. However, if you’re a fan of documentary cinema, the year’s biggest festival is about to get underway.
In its sixth year, Doc NYC has become one of the biggest and arguably the most important non-fiction film festival, with its selections more often than not finding their fair share of awards season gold. Getting selected as part of their “short list” of 15 gives one great odds of finding a similar spot in the Oscar race, with each of the last two years giving us nine overlapping titles among...

Abt has been included on Variety Magazine's "Top 10 Directors to Watch," and she has produced and directed documentaries for PBS, Own, MTV, Showtime and the Sundance Channel. Here's a nice way to finish out our week and send you off into the weekend -- with a short exclusive clip from the Sundance graduate Toe to Toe, from director Emily Abt. It's a film about an unlikely pair of girls at an upscale prep school, both of whom show promise on the lacrosse field. Both of whom have problems off the field.

Emily Abt's Toe to Toe is a raw look at a complex set of problems -- race and class -- told in stirring and straight-forward fashion. At once a tale of teen girls jockeying over friendship, prestige, boys and their own identities, Toe to Toe features two exceptionally layered performances at its center, as well as ideas that don't necessarily sort themselves out in neat and easily summarized fashion. Abt's film focuses on two seniors at a Washington, D.C.-area prep school, who meet on the first day of tryouts of the school's lacrosse team. Both Tosha (Sonequa Martin) and Jessie (Louisa Krause) are new transfers -- Tosha from a Baltimore Catholic school, Jessie from a series of private schools from which she's been, well, forced to withdraw because of her wild behavior. Jessie is a child of privilege, but also the product of...

Strand Releasing has sent us an exclusive clip for Emily Abt’s film, Toe To Toe. An Official Selection of The Sundance Film Festival 2009, the film follows two girls’ friendship “at a politically correct prep school in Washington DC.” One is very disciplined and the other has been around the block more than once…if you get my drift. Their friendship takes a dive when they both go for the same boy, hottie deejay Rashid.

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.
Despite a critical drubbing, the core audience of young British teenage girls seemed to be satisfied by...

The B-flix project for Bloomingdales was a dream come true for our Young Indies initiative. Young filmmakers are no different than artists who lived during the Renaissance... they need patrons to be able to work their craft and allow their talent to be seen. Bloomingdale's allowed these five young directors, Amy Redford, Antonio Campos, Emily Abt, Barry Jenkins and Andrew Hunt, to create in the most nurturing environment one could imagine. The resulting films are reflective of that support, and if more larger brands and corporations could do this, young artists could flourish and soar. The harsh reality of today's independent film market is that emerging director/writers often see their features get lost in cyberspace without any traditional means of support or advertising to boost awareness for their artistic endeavors. Fortunately, there are still those who actually show their interest and support of burgeoning voices, ...

Tribeca Film celebrates the spirit of independent film in its many forms, and we are the first to shout 'hurrah!' whenever commercial entities choose to support filmmakers in the pursuit of their art. With this autumn's Bflix contest, Bloomingdale's and Young Indies have teamed up do just that. In commissioning five short films as part of its fall fashion campaign, Bloomingdale's has subverted its traditional ad strategy; though each unique snippet of artistic vision has a subtle nod to the department store, none even remotely resembles a billboard or fashion ad. A board game comes alive through animation (via Andrew Hunt); an interracial, outer-borough relationship develops (via Barry Jenkins); best friends present a recession survival guide (via Emily Abt); the lingerie department evokes nostalgia (via Antonio Campos); and the ritual of tea reaches across generations (via Amy Redford and Hall Powell): each film celebrates the spirit of our diverse city,...

To say that I am impressed with writer/director Emily Abt is an understatement. I've been a fan of hers since I first saw her documentary All of Us about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in African American women which was released in NY last fall and broadcast on Showtime on World AIDS Day on December 1st. Here are some questions she answered about the film. We became email buddies and while we live about 15 minutes away by walking we never met until last month when she appeared on a panel on women directors at the Women, Action Media conference in Cambridge, Ma. Emily's star is on the rise. Her first narrative feature Toe to Toe made it into Sundance, she was named one of Variety's 10 Directors to Watch in 2009 and she got great agents. She even has...
