The 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards It's hard to believe I've been doing my own brand of "awards" for seven years now. Perhaps because film awards seem to have grown increasingly irrelevant, but when you watch as many movies as I do per year it is nice to sit back and remember the finer moments of the past year, especially when we're stuck in the doldrums of the early year releases, dealing with the likes of Jupiter Ascending, Taken 3, Blackhat and Seventh Son. So, as we are now only a few weeks away from the 87th Annual Academy Awards, it's time to hand out the 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards, looking back on a year that turned out to be much better than it initially appeared it may be. A hard question I'm trying to answer is just what kind of year in movies was 2014c Like previous years, blockbusters came and went.

It’s been a great year for film music. I say that as someone who had to endure the laughably dated qualities of Alberto Iglesias’ Exodus: Gods and Kings and had to swallow the pill that is Howard Shore‘s latter days Middle-earth music.
But it has been a great year. Clint Mansell gave us haunting, complex soundscapes in Noah, the Alexandre Desplat Hive Mind unleashed another five feature-length scores on the planet, and we even got a peak at John Williams‘ forthcoming music in that Star Wars trailer.
So what was the best of the bunch? For simplicity’s sake, I’ve limited this list to movies with U.S. theatrical runs in 2014. When possible, I’ve also linked to our reviews and select cues on Spotify, although you’ll note the occasional YouTube or SoundCloud embed as well. Let’s do this:

We here at Sound On Sight believe horror transcends explicit gore, jump scares or supernatural content, which is why you’ll soon notice our list ranges from independent art films to psychological thrillers to parodies, satire and more. Surprisingly, vampires lead the pack this year, along with found footage flicks, but there are a few comedies, one remake and even some strange love stories as well.
Every other year, I’ve published the list of best horror films based solely on my picks, but this year, Sound On Sight editor Justine Smith and Sos contributor Felix Vasquez Jr. also participated. Since we couldn’t agree with what is the best horror film of 2014, we decided to publish the list in alphabetical order. That said, here are our individual picks:

Dwayne Johnson’s brawn was no match for Scarlett Johansson’s brain at the box office on Friday, as Johansson’s new action film Lucy took the top spot. With an estimated $17.1 million on Friday, Lucy may bring an unexpected boost to this year’s weak July box office and is now on track to pass its estimated $35 million opening, further cementing Johansson’s star power.

Dwayne Johnson takes on the role of a club-wielding demigod in Brett Ratner’s Hercules. What’s not to like? Here’s Ryan’s review...
In Hercules, Dwayne Johnson wears a lion’s head as a hat. That probably tells you a lot about the tone of director Brett Ratner’s larger-than-life sword-and-sandals adventure. Based on Steve Moore’s comic book of the same name, Hercules re-imagines the hero of classical legend as a flesh-and-blood mercenary struggling to live up to the weight of his own myth.
Surrounded by a misfit group of fellow warriors-for-hire, Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules is the ultimate working class hero, even if he is meant to be the son of Zeus: he leads from the front, and wades into action while the noblemen he works for stand around in their purple cloaks, chatting and eating freshly-peeled grapes.

No one can strike a muscly pose -- or unleash a mighty yell -- quite like The Rock. Dwayne Johnson is "Hercules," and the film's first trailer shows the superstar in fine form. It looks like the film -- the second Hercules movie of 2014 -- focuses on the half-god/half-man as he completes his 12 labors, which include fighting such giant mythological creatures as the Hydra, a huge lion, an even huger boar, and the three-headed hellhound Cerberus. Johnson only gets one line in the trailer, but it's all you need to know. Watch the trailer here: The Paramount Pictures/MGM film is based on the comic book by Steve Moore Directed by Brett Ratner ("X-Men: The Last Stand," "Tower Heist"), "Hercules" also stars Ian McShane, John Hurt, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes Will Johnson next join modern mythology as a DC Comics superhero? "Hercules" opens July 25.

And in the photo below, you can see that this is one gigantic set, and it looks like this location was just found in the middle of a desert as opposed to being built by a crew. Dwayne Johnson has been quite the busy bee lately. Just in the last year, he’s starred in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (with another possibly on the way), Snitch, Empire State, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Pain & Gain, and Fast & Furious 6 (with another definitely on the way). However, he shows no signs of slowing down as production has already begun on his next project, an adaptation of Steve Moore’s graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars.
Today, via First Showing and Johnson’s own Twitter account, we have a few snapshots taken on the set of the currently-shooting film, which include a look at Johnson as the titular character. Granted, they’re not much, but they do give us a small idea as to what the film is going to look like (and perhaps how gruesome it will be given the bloody weapon shown).

Sure, Midnight Run came out in 1988, but why not try to turn it into a franchise 20-odd years later?
Screenwriter Tim Dowling (Just Go with It, Role Models) was hired two years ago to write a sequel script that would allow Robert De Niro to reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. Now the sequel may have a director in Brett Ratner (Tower Heist, the Rush Hour trilogy). Deadline reports that Ratner is in talks to direct the sequel for Universal, which has also hired screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Four Brothers) to rewrite Dowling's script.
De Niro is still attached to the project, but it's unlikely Charles Grodin — who played the embezzling mob accountant (Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas) Walsh escorted to L.A. in the first movie — will step out of retirement to return.
This isn't the first attempt to create a Midnight Run franchise.

Former wrestler Dwayne Johnson signs up to play the Greek hero in Brett Ratner's forthcoming comic adaptation
Action star Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is to follow in Arnold Schwarzenegger's footsteps by playing Hercules in Brett Ratner's forthcoming film about the mythological Greek hero, reports Variety.
The former wrestler will head to New Zealand in October to begin work on the film, which is based on Steve Moore's 2008 graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars. The comic is set in barbarian Thrace, and plays down many of the character's mythological traits to present a more human figure.
Hercules has been presented numerous times on the big screen, notably in Disney's 1997 animation and 1969's Hercules in New York, which starred a young, heavily dubbed, Schwarzenegger, when he was billed as Arnold Strong. Ratner's most recent film, Tower Heist, his first feature in four years, was a minor critical and commercial success.

Director Brett Ratner ("Tower Heist") will adapt Radical Publishing's "Hercules" comic book series "The Thracian Wars" and "The Knives Of Kush" (written by Steve Moore, illustrated by Cris Bolsin, Jim Steranko), into a live action MGM feature :
"...fourteen-hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth that was neither man nor god. 'Hercules', powerful son of the god king 'Zeus', received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods, finding his only solace in battle.

With the disappointing box office performance of Tower Heist and a gay slur that led to him stepping down as producer of the Academy Awards, 2011 ended on a pretty low note for Brett Ratner. 'Rush Hour' and 'X-Men: The Last Stand' director Brett Ratner is in talks with MGM to direct 'Hercules: The Thracian Wars,' based on a comic book by Steve Moore about the extraordinarily strong Greek hero.
Last year, reports surfaced that the director was putting together a 'Hercules' project at Millennium and Nu Image films. Ratner dismissed the rumors, insisting his next film would be 'Tower Heist,' an action comedy with an all-star cast that includes Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Zachary Levi, Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni and Gabourey Sidibe.
With 'Tower Heist' completed and set to hit theaters on Nov. 4, Ratner can again focus on 'Hercules.' This film is reportedly a different one than he was originally developing, however. Ratner's new 'Hercules' comes from a script by Ryan Condal with Spyglass Entertainment financing.

Almost exactly a year ago, Brett Ratner was attached [1] to direct a Millennium/Nu Image film based on the legend of Heracles/Hercules. The film was in development for years, but after Brett Ratner was attached to direct that he went on to make Tower Heist, and we haven't heard much about Hercules at all. Now the Ratner/Hercules pairing returns, but in different form. this time housed at MGM and going under the name Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Vulture [2] says that Ratner is attached to adapt the Radical Publishing coming that goes by that same name, from a film script by Ryan Condal. Spyglass Entertainment optioned the property and was developing it with a distribution deal with Universal, but now that Spyglass is the de facto force behind MGM, we can evidently expect the lion logo to run in front of the film. Assuming it gets made, that is...

Director of such films as 'X-Men: The Last Stand,' 'Rush Hour 3' and the upcoming, 'Tower Heist,' Brett Ratner is in talks to direct a 'Hercules' film based on the comic book series from Radical Publishing, 'Hercules: The Thracian Wars.' Oddly enough, Ratner was said to be pondering involvement in an entirely unrelated 'Hercules' project last year, however, his crew insisted that he was never interested and was eying 'Tower Heist,' his film that is now in post-production. From Amazon, here is the description of the first volume of 'Hercules: The Thracian Wars:' "Fourteen-hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules, powerful son of the god king Zeus, received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods,...

Brett Ratner Circling A New Hercules Project Set Up At MGM
Last July it was announced that Brett Ratner was looking to direct a new film about the Greek legend of Hercules for producer Avi Lerner. But instead the Rush Hour director chose to make Tower Heist instead with Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck and Matthew Broderick, a comedy heist movie with Noah Baumbach's name on script. Yes I know how odd that sounds. However, Vulture reports that Ratner is now circling a completely new Hercules project called Hercules: The Thracian Wars. The film is set up at MGM and is based on Steve Moore's comic book of the same name, with Ryan Condal behind the script.

Brett Ratner has stepped away from the director’s chair over the past few years to focus on producing, but signs point to him going back to his main…profession. Let’s be nice and call it that.
Later this year, we’ll be seeing Tower Heist from him, and now Vulture reports that the director has begun discussions with MGM about directing their Hercules project, titled Hercules: The Thracian Wars.
Based off of the comic series of the same name by Steve Moore, it’s been written by Ryan Condal, the screenwriter for Alex Proyas‘ film version of Paradise Lost. The comic presents a re-telling of the classic hero’s story, taking things in what seems to be a slightly darker direction. Oddly enough, Ratner was rumored to direct an Avi Lerner–produced film based on the character, titled Hercules. Whether or not there’s any connection between that...

Last year Brett Ratner was rumored to be involved with a Hercules project under producer Avi Lerner. That was shot down by the director himself who said that he would make a movie called Tower Heist instead. Well now Vulture report that Ratner is back in the Hercules hunt, this time an adap of the Radical Publishing title for MGM.. Ratner is flirting with another Hercules project and is in negotiations to direct Hercules: The Thracian Wars, based on Radical Publishing’s comic book of the same name penned by Steve Moore. The script, we're told, comes from Ryan Condal, who most recently wrote the script to Alex Proyas's adapation of Milton's Paradise Lost at Legendary Pictures. Did I just go almost an entire article without insulting Brett Ratner? Well, maybe I'm maturing. I'll leave that to you guys. Feel free to address the fact that the fat fuck...

Brett Ratner is currently in talks to direct a new Hercules film for MGM. Fans of swords and sandals films have a lot to be excited about with Immortals coming out this summer. We also have Conan the Barbarian, but I am not sold on Jason Mamoa. Last July we reported that Ratner was interested in a directing Hercules film with Avi Lerner producing. That project was dropped by Ratner who went on to focus his efforts on Tower Heist.
According to Vulture, Ratner is circling another Hercules project and is in negotiations to direct Hercules: The Thracian Wars, based on Radical Comics book of the same name penned by Steve Moore. Ryan Condal wrote the script for the new project. He also wrote the script for Alex Proyas's adapation of Milton's Paradise Lost at Legendary Pictures.
I am excited to see Tower Heist, it has a great cast.

Last July we heard that director Brett Ratner was looking to direct a new film from producer Avi Lerner that would bring the epic action hero Hercules back to the big screen. But the filmmaker went in another direction and decided to make Tower Heist with Ben Stiller. However, Vulture hears thar Ratner is now circling a completely different Hercules project in the form of Hercules: The Thracian Wars, a film set up at the recovering MGM Pictures, which is based on Steve Moore's comic book of the same name. Ryan Condal, who recently penned Alex Proyas' gestating Paradise Lost adaptation, is behind the screenplay. The synopsis from Moore's comic book at Radical Publishing (the company that also has an adaptation of their Legends comic in the works) sounds pretty epic: Nearly 3,200 years ago, a tormented soul walked the Earth as neither man nor god: Hercules, powerful son...

Lovers of Greek mythology will surely rejoice at this new bit of info that Brett Ratner is now attached to direct a Hercules film for MGM. No, sadly it's not a reboot of Arnold's Hercules In New York, rather it's an adaptation of Hercules: The Thracian Wars, a comic by Steve Moore at Radical Publishing. A year ago, Ratner was in talks for a different Hercules project from producer Avi Lerner, but scrapped it to do the upcoming Tower Heist instead. But he must have a fixation with the hero,...

"Watchmen" co-creator Alan Moore lit up Twitter accounts in the comics industry this week with comments he made in a Bleeding Cool interview about the rights to the book, the creative state of the medium and other topics. Skottie Young, Rob Liefeld and a few others spoke their piece in response, and there hasn't been a whole lot of sympathy for Moore broadly.
Other men failed to grab sympathy on Twitter as well yesterday, including Tom Brady and Brett Favre. Jason Aaron and Ben McCool were keeping tabs on them, while Jimmy Palmiotti made a "Jonah Hex" pitch to the world and Gail Simone explained what it will take to get her to go see the Spider-Man musical.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for September 10, 2010.
@jasonaaron Tom Brady was apparently uninjured in his car crash today. So wait a minute, you mean his hair looks like that on purpose?...

Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds (François Duhamel / The Weinstein Co.) (top); Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (Jonathan Olley / Summit Entertainment) (bottom) The Online Film Critics Society has announced its list of nominees for 2009. Avatar may be a huge blockbuster-in-the-making, but Ofcs members apparently weren’t that impressed. James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure epic earned three nominations: best director, best cinematography (Mauro Fiore), and best editing (Steve R. Moore, John Refoua and Stephen Rivkin). Actually, that’s not bad at all, but … The Hurt Locker, with about $12 million in grosses at the domestic box office, received seven nominations, including best picture, best director (Kathryn Bigelow, Cameron’s former wife), best actor (Jeremy Renner), best supporting actor (Anthony Mackie), [...]...
