Japanese distributor picks up Neil Horner’s crime thriller from Jinga Films.
Chance iN has acquired Ab Negative for Japan from Jinga Films.
Neil Horner’s crime thriller stars Vincent Regan, Seb Castang, Robert Cavanagh and Stephen Marcus, and follows two hit men who become the subject of a sadistic game of revenge.
Jinga’s Julian Richards commented: “Ab Negative combines classic British gangster tropes with an intricate plot more typical of American crime thrillers. It may look like another Lock Stock but it has more in common with Reservoir Dogs and The Usual Suspects.”
Ab Negative has also been picked up by Invincible Pictures for North America, who are planning a theatrical release in April 2015.

Found footage horror films are usually a tough trick to pull off well. Not only do they require realistic performances and events so that audiences are (at least partly) convinced that what they’re seeing is real enough for the length of the movie, but the filmmakers have to also balance that with telling a compelling, terrifying and – crucially – entertaining story. Some are more successful than others, with The Blair Witch Project and the [Rec] series being more obvious examples, but the found footage train has seemed to be running out of steam lately with many of the films made in the style regurgitating tropes that were only developed in the last twenty years and offering fuzzy, ill-executed plots that often only resolve when the protagonists buy the farm.

Mark checks out a new mashup of Doctor Who with Shakespeare...
Over its 50 years, Doctor Who has made some pretty wild pseudo-historical leaps in its representation of artists. The Fourth Doctor wrote “This Is A Fake” on the Mona Lisa in Uv pen. Donna Noble came up with the name of Miss Marple. Stevie Wonder sang under London Bridge in 1814.
The new BBC Books tie-in The Shakespeare Notebooks follows in much the same tradition of warping history around the Doctor, with its whole audacious premise being that most of the Bard’s works were Doctor Who fan fiction.
It’s a fun place to start, with an introduction that contextualises the book as a collection of notes and scraps, comprising early drafts and notes written by Will himself. These notes happen to have been transcribed by seasoned Who authors James Goss, Jonathan Morris, Julian Richards, Justin Richards and Matthew Sweet.

Following its release in North America last year, director Julian Richards' debut horror feature, Darklands, is finally now available on DVD in the UK as well courtesy of Metrodome Distribution. Check out its impressive new cover art.
From the Press Release:
Starring Craig Fairbrass (Cliffhanger), Jon Finch (Frenzy), and Rowena King (Wild Saragossa Sea), Darklands is frequently compared to Robin Hardy’s 1970’s cult classic The Wicker Man, but the writer/director also acknowledges a debt to Roman Polanski’s Rosemary's Baby.
Darklands, which won the Melies D’Argent for Best European Fantasy Film in 1997, launched the directing career of Julian Richards, who went on to helm Silent Cry, The Last Horror Movie, Summer Scars, and Shiver, whilst producer Paul Brooks produced Shadow of the Vampire, White Noise, and Haunting in Connecticut.

With Shiver being released to DVD earlier this month, we had director Julian Richards take part in our latest Q&A feature. Continue reading to learn about his work with Danielle Harris and John Jarratt, filming this project in just 18 days, and much more:

Truly understanding the inspiration behind the actions of a deranged serial killer can be challenge for many people who are unable to relate to their motivations. But versatile Australian actor John Jarratt, who made a name for himself in the horror genre with the help of one his career defining roles, Mick Taylor, in ‘Wolf Creek,’ is proving his talent once again the new horror thriller, ‘Shiver.’ Based on the 1992 book of the same name by Brian Harper, the film, which was directed by Julian Richards and is now available on DVD and VOD, is another great character study by the actor into what possesses a person to torment [ Read More ]

Shiver is a brutal and unsettling film that puts the viewer through an emotionally rough experience while bombarding them with images that won’t easily fade. This is something that is not easily done and takes some skill.
Enter director Julian Richards whose film, The Last Horror Movie, has scared me for years.
His latest effort is an uncompromising look at loneliness, torment, and murder. Shock safely sat down with him for a one on one about bringing the book to life, casting the characters real life counterparts, and causing the audience to Shiver...

Indie horror is always a strange beast, as productions can either shell out significant dough for big-name talent, or they can invest in practical effects work and crazy, bloody action – but not both (typically). It’s a shame budgetary constraints plague projects, but it also speaks volumes when a director can overcome such hurdles and create a surprising genre hit hidden amidst a slew of similar films. Shiver is unfortunately one of the films that secured some serious genre star power in Danielle Harris, John Jarratt, and Casper Van Dien, but doesn’t really stack up in other places. Danielle Harris is a Scream Queen legend these days, and John Jarrett has been making a name by playing psychopaths, but a weakly structured story didn’t let these stars truly break out. There wasn’t a shiver, shutter, or squirm to be had during Julian Richards’ latest – don’t let the name fool you.

What does it take to empower someone? So many people sort of get lost along the way and spend their time riding the tide of life with no control of their direction. The world is full of victims that can’t find the shore. I was reminded of this while watching Shiver, the new film by Julian Richards. In his film, The Last Horror Movie, he took us so deep into the mind of a killer that it made us uncomfortable. This time we see the mind of the victim and in this case, it is no more comforting.
Shiver begins with a murder at a local dinner called Cadillac Jacks. The murder isn’t particularly graphic but the level of cruelty is intense. It’s the look on the victim’s face that stays with you. This is how we are introduced to The Gryphon, the seriously disturbed killer played John Jarratt.
