The films in the running for the 2023 Best Film Editing Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Tar,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (37/10), “Elvis” (9/2), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Tar” (9/2).
Five of the six individual cutters competing for the gold this year are first-time nominees, making for the category’s highest newcomer rate since 2018. In that case, Lee Smith emerged victorious on his third bid for “Dunkirk.” The current group of rookies consists of Eddie Hamilton (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Paul Rogers (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Monika Willi (“Tar”), and “Elvis” duo Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa.

The generous read on “Jurassic World Dominion” is that it’s a metaphor unto itself; the ongoing moral of the film series is that mixing the wrong strains of DNA leads to disaster, and that lesson is writ large in the awkward and clumsy attempt to graft the stars of the original “Jurassic Park” onto the “Jurassic World” movies, a combo platter that only serves to make the latter-day protagonists even less interesting by comparison.
The other generous read, although it’s damning with faint praise, is to call this the best “Jurassic” movie since the original in 1993, but that doesn’t mean this one’s not, much like its predecessors, a hot mess. It’s just a hot mess with some effectively scary bits, a cool car chase and Laura Dern.
“Dominion” spends so much time jumping back and forth between the “Park” cast and the “World” plot that...

The films in the running for the 2021 Best Film Editing Oscar are: Yorgos Lamprinos (“The Father”), Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”), Frédéric Thoraval (“Promising Young Woman”), Mikkel E.G. Nielsen (“Sound of Metal”) and Alan Baumgarten (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Our current odds indicate that “Sound of Metal” (69/20) will take the prize, followed in order by “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (71/20), “Nomadland” (9/2), “The Father” (9/2), and “Promising Young Woman” (9/2)
Of the five individuals in this year’s lineup, only Baumgarten has been nominated before. He, Jay Cassidy, and Crispin Struthers were collectively recognized for “American Hustle” in 2014 but lost to Alfonso Cuarón and Mark Sanger (“Gravity”).
Any one of the newcomers could become the fifth cutter in eight years to prevail on their first outing. Sanger was the first, followed by Margaret Sixel, John Ottman, and Andrew Buckland.

Stars: David Harbour, Sasha Lane, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Mark Stanley, Brian Gleeson, Penelope Mitchell, Mario de la Rosa, Atanas Srebrev, Dawn Sherrer | Written by Andrew Cosby | Directed by Neil Marshall
Hellboy, formerly known as Hellboy: The Blood Queen, is directed by Game of Thrones alumni and Dog Soldiers director Neil Marshall. It stands as a complete reboot of the franchise after Guillermo del Toro’s cult classic duology that failed to light the box office with disappointing returns. Gone is Ron Perlman as the titular character and replacing the iconic actor is Stranger Things star David Harbour, so at least it has that going for it, right?
This reboot of Hellboy is lifeless and soulless. The acting, from newcomer to the franchise, Sasha Lane is dreadful; meanwhile star David Harbour fails to bring any form of charisma or charm for a character that should be the epitome of sarcasm.

Ryan Reynolds has a new movie coming out, and in the teaser, he’s holding his balls. His Poke’ balls, that is. Reynolds is essentially playing himself, but in Pikachu format, in the first new Poke’ movie in quite a while. The reboot that begged not to be made. Granted, the trailers have been visually stunning, and if the lines are written well, Reynolds’ patented smart-alec delivery could still bring this pot to a boil.
In case you haven’t seen the other trailers, or don’t know about poke’mon, or Pikachu, or haven’t had a TV for the last 30 years, Poke’mon, or pocket monsters, are anime’ creatures that you can capture via a red and white Poke’ ball, and then train them to battle Other poke’mon, and Pikachu has been about the only thing that never changes, only saying “peeka-choo” about a thousand different ways,...

Alfonso Cuarón won the Best Cinematography Oscar on Sunday night for “Roma,” a film he also wrote and directed. The black and white Netflix film is semi-autobiographical, based on Cuarón’s childhood memories growing up in Mexico City in the 1970s and the life of his family’s indigenous live-in maid played by Yalitza Aparicio.
Cuarón had won two Oscars prior to tonight’s Academy Awards — Best Director and Best Film Editing (shared with Mark Sanger) for his 2013 film “Gravity.” While Cuarón is hardly the first to do double duty as director and cinematographer on a film, he is the first to win the Best Cinematography Oscar for a film he also directed.

There are 87 titles vying for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award this year, in what continues to be a robust lineup of talent, with rich tales to tell from faraway lands. With a number of previous winners and nominees returning for another go-round, and some movies with a strong shot at nominations in other races, this has shaped up to be one of the richest rosters of Oscar contenders in recent memory. At this early stage, there appear to be some clear frontrunners, but as always, there are discoveries yet to be made, and the Foreign Language Committee faces the seriously daunting task of carving out a shortlist of nine films before the official nominations.
This year, however, new Committee heads Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann, who replace the long-serving Mark Johnson, have sought to make it easier on members to screen the films. In a bid for greater participation,...

Will Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”) finally join his filmmaking friends Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu in the pantheon of Oscar winners this year? If our odds are to be believed, he’s a strong front-runner to snag Best Picture, Best Director, and maybe even Best Original Screenplay for his romantic fantasy about a mute janitor (Sally Hawkins) in love with a fish man. And just think, it was a little more than a decade ago, in 2007, that the Three Amigos of Cinema, as they like to be known, were competing alongside each other for their 2006 films “Babel” (Inarritu), “Children of Men” (Cuaron) and “Pan’s Labyrinth” (del Toro). Two of them were first-time Oscar nominees that year. Now, by March 4, they could all be Oscar winners.

The 2010s has been a decade of Picture/Director splits at the Oscars, occurring in four of the last five years. While Best Picture has gone to more understated films in recent years, the Best Director race has really become the category for rewarding visually stunning technical achievements, such as “La La Land,” “Life of Pi” and “The Revenant.” As such, the winners of Best Director this decade are some of the finest craftsmen in the business. But which is your absolute favorite of the 2010s?
Look back on each Best Director winner this decade and be sure to vote in our poll below. (See 2018 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
Tom Hooper, “The King’s Speech” (2010) — The decade began with Tom Hooper winning for his Best Picture winner “The King’s Speech,” which, unlike most of the winners this decade, is focused more on performances and rather than marvelous visuals.

Four different directors whose films are nominated for best picture could all win Oscars at Sunday’s ceremony.
Birdman, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and Boyhood, directed by Richard Linklater, are frontrunners in the best picture race. Both directors are nominated as co-producers on their respective films and both are also nominated for best director. If Inarritu wins for best picture and Linklater wins for best director (or vice versa), it would be the 24th time in Oscar history where best picture and best director have split.
Wes Anderson, director of The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Damien Chazelle, director of Whiplash, are nominated for original screenplay and adapted screenplay, respectively. Anderson co-produced The Grand Budapest Hotel.
If Anderson and Chazelle win for their screenplays (and Linklater and Inarritu win), it would be the second year in a row where three or more directors won at the same awards ceremony.

The 87th Academy Awards are barely two weeks away, and on that night, one of five films will win the Oscar for Best Film Editing. Which will it be: “Whiplash,” “Boyhood,” “American Sniper,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” or “The Imitation Game”? Perhaps a more interesting question is, do you think any of them deserve a spot on the list of the 75 Best Edited Films of All Time, as selected by the Motion Picture Editors Guild? That’s right, in the May-June issue of “Editors Guild Magazine,” guild members weighed in on the 75 best-edited films ever. It’s important to note that titles were chosen based on the strength of both their picture and sound editing. And granted, the list is over two and a half years old at this point (the votes were collected in 2012), so there’s a chance it might look a little different if it had come out more recently.

Reese Witherspoon and Jean-Marc Vallée making Wild
Jean-Marc Vallée’s eighth feature film Wild is just about to begin its theatrical release in North America. The film stars Reese Witherspoon, who plays Cheryl Strayed as she goes on an incredible, though unprepared, hike across the Pacific Crest Trail to morn the death of her mother. This new release provides a great opportunity to reflect on the director’s career and survey the literature surrounding him.
Even though I’m sympathetic to Barry Hertz’s article in Maclean’s, "Jean-Marc Vallée: Film’s redemption man" (Sept. 15, 2014), for acknowledging the director’s talent and growing international reputation, it still doesn’t do Vallée justice as it concludes with vague generalizations that, instead of enlightening, overlook his actual merits. Hertz overemphasizes Vallée’s work with actors and argues that he ‘lacks’ a unique style of directing, criticizes him for his modesty, and...

The 40th Annual Saturn Awards were held this past Thursday, June 26th, and a what great show it was from (as Johnny Carson used to say) "beautiful downtown Burbank"! Here's the full list of winners and more.
Actually, we were high above the city at the famous Castaway restaurant and banquet hall. The Saturn Awards has been held here for the past few years, and it really is a fabulous venue with the best views of the San Fernando Valley anywhere.
Among the winners are Dread Central favorites "The Walking Dead," "Hannibal," The Conjuring, and Vera Farmiga's no holds barred performance as Norma Bates in "Bates Motel." The eye candy and updates from the carpet come from director Neil Marshall; the Curse of Chucky crew - Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, and Fiona Dourif; Insidious 3's Lin Shaye; and more.
The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

At this point, you’ve either seen “Gravity” already or you’re just plain not interested. The movie made $716 million worldwide and it won seven Academy Awards just over two months ago. Director Alfonso Cuarón talked about the making of the movie on so many different occasions now that the film’s production history is probably common knowledge for those who consider themselves to be big fans of the film. But if there’s one group who can’t seem to stop talking about “Gravity,” it’s the Academy. They held an event at the DGA Theater this past week called “Deconstructing Gravity” where they conducted a Q&A with editor Mark Sanger, animation supervisor Max Solomon, and visual effects supervisor Tim Webber. Also present for the event was astronaut Cady Coleman who gave a speech commending the makers behind “Gravity” for their exceptional work. During the Q&A part of the event,...

Even if you think you know how the Oscar-winning space odyssey "Gravity" was made, you don't. That is, unless you're Alfonso Cuaron or another member of the cast and crew. There aren't enough special features, docs, interviews, or behind the scenes information available for anyone outside the creators to fully grasp the monumental efforts that went into making last year's critical and commercial smash appear as simple as it did. Seven Oscars really weren't enough for "Gravity." The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences held a special event Monday night in Hollywood to honor the film's stunning technical achievements with editor Mark Sanger, visual effects supervisor Tim Webber -- both of whom won Oscars in February -- and animation supervisor Max Solomon. Hosted by Academy Governor Bill Kroyer, "Deconstructing Gravity" took an in-depth look at the production methods employed to make the space odyssey come to life. Here are the highlights of the incredibly.

The morning after the Oscars is always a strange feeling. We've been covering this process in earnest for months, and now it's over. And for the first time ever, I'm pleased to say that I scored a perfect 10 in predicting the winners in the crafts categories! (I went 21/24 overall, missing Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and…Best Picture.) To be fair, however, I'm hardly the only person to have gone 10/10 in this respect. In that sense, we had a night without surprises, which is not to say we didn't have stories. The big story in the crafts categories is, of course, "Gravity's" dominance, as it won six of the 10 below-the-line fields, with the obvious (and highly deserved) win in Best Visual Effects being a foreshadowing of things to come in Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. Visual effects supervisor Tim Webber,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:
1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor
Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

12 Years A Slave took home Best Picture, but it was Gravity that won the most golden statues with seven Oscar wins at the 86th Academy Awards.
Host Ellen DeGeneres had fun with the star-studded audience, ordering pizza and making Brad Pitt give out paper plates to lucky ladies such as Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who were all very hungry. DeGeneres also made fun of Jennifer Lawrence’s great fall at last year’s Oscars in her opening monologue and likening the entire awards show to The Hunger Games.
The awards went off swiftly, and not without a hitch or two, but technical difficulties aside, DeGeneres delivered a sweet, funny and uncontroversial show. Her best host moment came when she took a selfie mid-show with Streep that turned into a selfie with anyone in the first three rows who was quick enough to run and beat each other into the frame.

It was a big night for Gravity’s artisans, who collected most of the Oscars in the crafts categories after a season during which the film effectively became the poster child for collaborative filmmaking. Before accepting the Oscar for best director, Gravity’s helmer Alfonso Cuaron picked up his first Academy Award in film editing, which he shared with co-editor Mark Sanger. Cuaron's longtime friend, director of photography Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, won his first Oscar in cinematography. He had five prior nominations for The Tree of Life, Children of Men, The New World, Sleepy Hollow and A Little Princess. Photos: Oscars 2014:
