Following its premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival last year, “Femme” is finally set for theatrical release in the United States on March 22 in New York and March 29 in Los Angeles. The British thriller from Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping is adapted from their 2021 BAFTA-nominated short and stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay. Utopia has acquired stateside distribution rights.
“Femme” follows Jules (Stewart-Jarrett), who is targeted in a horrific homophobic attack, destroying his life and career. Some time after that event he encounters Preston (MacKay), one of his attackers, in a gay sauna. He wants revenge.
With a critics consensus that reads, “Sexually charged and riddled with tension, Femme redresses the noir genre and may leave audiences biting their nails to the nub,” the movie holds fresh at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Read our full review round-up below.

In an appearance at the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater, actress Elizabeth Berkley shared her personal insights into the much-maligned 1995 film Showgirls.
Berkley, who portrayed the Las Vegas dancer Nomi Malone, revealed that her family’s reaction to the film differed significantly from the general public’s perception at the time.
“My mommy asked my agent at the time — I won’t mention his name — do you think that she could win an Oscar for this role?” she recalled.
Berkley playfully expressed gratitude to the Academy and jokingly acknowledged her mother’s aspirations. However, she highlighted the film’s transformation from a critical disappointment to a beloved cult classic.
Berkley emphasized the film’s significance. “I’m so grateful that the film has found its way not only in your hearts but especially the LGBTQ community,” she said.

One of the last movies we’d ever link to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is Showgirls. The Razzies, sure, but the Oscars? But the much-derided film is finally getting some due, with a special 35mm screening at the Academy Museum this week. Yes, it sold out.
Elizabeth Berkley – who played aspiring dancer Nomi in the 1995 movie – made a speech at the Showgirls screening, cheekily telling the audience, “So tonight I’d like to thank the Academy…Museum.” She went on to note the importance of the story that its initial audience missed, expressing her gratitude to those that have continued to support the movie nearly 30 years on. “[Showgirls] really pushed the boundaries at that time that now have been embraced — not misunderstood but truly embraced. And I’m so grateful that the film has found its way not only in your hearts but especially the LGBTQ community…...

Once a punchline, now a classic, Paul Verhoeven’s lusty Las Vegas spin on “All About Eve” was destroyed by critics at its release in 1995. But how many movies from that same period can boast a 1,200-seat sell-out at the Academy Museum’s Geffen Theater all these years later?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s star (and that year’s Razzie-winner) Elizabeth Berkley received no less than three standing ovations during her introduction on Wednesday.
She told the crowd that the property was so hot at the time that she asked her agent if it could mean an Academy Award nomination. “Every girl in Hollywood had fought for this role,” she said.
While recognizing now that was a bit of wishful thinking she did salute the audience that “got” the movie from day one.

A sold-out crowd of 1,200 Showgirls lovers gave the film’s star Elizabeth Berkley three standing ovations during her introduction of the much-maligned, then adored 1995 camp classic at a screening at the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater on Wednesday.
Berkley, 49, looked radiant as she addressed the audience in glittery eyeshadow and a tailored tuxedo. She noted in her remarks that she once asked her agent after getting cast in Showgirls if there was a chance she might be nominated for an Oscar for the part. “Every girl in Hollywood had fought for this role,” she said. “So it was not a strange thing to ask.”
“So tonight I’d like to thank the Academy …. Museum,” Berkley said, to cheers from the audience.

For years, the movie Showgirls faced near-universal derision, yet its star, Elizabeth Berkley, defended it. Now that the film has nearly 30 years of hindsight in the rear-view mirror, it’s become a cult classic, and Berkley has delighted in the idea of telling people she was right all along. It’s definitely not revisionist history for Berkley — before the movie even hit theaters, she was talking to us about how much she loved making it. Berkley, who had done quite a bit of dancing before making the movie, told us she fully embraced the idea of turning her dance moves into striptease moves for the film. Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar was a teen heartthrob on the NBC sitcom Saved by the Bell. While it’s been more than a few years since Gosselaar’s day on the show, the character still follows him around today. In recent years, Gosselaar has spoken out about some of the regrets he still harbors regarding some of the show’s more questionable scenes.
Despite his reservations, Gosselaar should show himself a little grace, as should his fans, given that he was just 15 years old when the first episode of Saved by the Bell aired. Here’s a look at the ’90s teen sitcom and Gosselaar’s love-hate relationship with some of the show’s storylines.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar appeared on the “Pod Meets World” podcast and spoke about how tough it can be to revisit outdated episodes of “Saved by the Bell,” on which he starred as Zack Morris. The series aired on NBC for four seasons and 86 episodes from 1989 to 1992. In the show’s second episode, “The Lisa Card,” Zack charges boys in school to kiss Lisa (Lark Voorhies) for $1 so she can get money to pay her dad back after she exceeds his credit card limit.
“There was one where I was basically whoring out Lisa Turtle,” Gosselaar said. “I charged people to kiss her without her consent. That was a tough one.”
In another episode, Zack pretends to be Native American and wears a “a full headdress.”

When Babylon was announced as Damien Chazelle’s next project after First Man and near-Best Picture winner La La Land, many expected it to be a major contender on the awards circuit. With a cast of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie and seemingly serving as a love letter to the history of cinema, what could stop it from sweeping the Academy Awards? As it turns out, a lot, as Babylon would only get three tech nods, with the film flopping at the box office and facing criticism for being self-indulgent, over-the-top and perhaps containing two or three too many bodily fluids. It’s very much a love it or hate it sort of movie, but will it one day be deemed a classic that went misunderstood during its release? According to author Stephen King, it very well could be.

“The Idol” — HBO’s new series starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as a Svengali-like guru who takes a pop star (Lily Rose-Depp) under his wing — premieres on June 4 after a full year of making headlines for its reportedly “chaotic” production, “toxic” set and, according to some, “sexual torture porn” content.
Here’s a timeline of all “The Idol” controversies that have beset the series, from the replacing of original director Amy Seimetz to reports from traumatized crew members to reception by critics, who, to date, have given it a dismal 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

HBO has long been considered the leader in prestige television programming, and, over the last five months, the 51-year-old cable network has fully reinforced this belief with the critically acclaimed first season of "The Last of Us" and the perfectly pitched conclusions of "Succession" and "Barry." But while we're still buzzing over the finales of those last two shows, you can't help but look ahead and wonder how the King of Peak TV rides this wave of hosannas to the next must-watch triumphs.
The jury is out as to whether Sam Levinson's "The Idol" will draw as many eyeballs as his wildly popular teen melodrama "Euphoria," but, judging from the critical reaction thus far (and the behind-the-scenes controversy), the series promises to be a supercharged hot-take generator. The show stars Lily-Rose Depp as an out-of-control pop star whose instability and sexual desirability is wantonly exploited to launch her to diva immortality.

What The Weeknd wants, The Weeknd gets in “The Idol,” a skintastic, dark-side-of-showbiz fable that perpetuates the myth that pop stars are corporate puppets with no say in their own image-making, even as it allows hit-maker The Weeknd to call the shots.

The edgy, high-gloss HBO series, which premiered the first two of its five episodes at the Cannes Film Festival, demands a lot of star Lily-Rose Depp. She plays “rags-to-riches, trailers-to-mansions” Jocelyn, a mono-monikered Britney or Miley type who seems empowered one moment, impressionable the next.

Everyone’s favorite 90s stars were present at this year’s 90s Con in Connecticut, including Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Jason Priestly, Rose McGowan, Brian Krause, Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth.
Garth posted pictures from the con on her social media, captioning the post, “It was more like Friends Con Loved seeing some familiar and friendly faces this weekend.”

The 90210 star took selfies with costars Spelling, Priestley and Ziering, while noticeably not having one with Doherty. For other stars Garth didn’t get the chance to visit – such as Kathy Najimy, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Holly Marie Combs – she found and took pictures with banners of them.
People were quick to speculate about the absence of Doherty in person or on a banner, but Garth quickly shut all rumors down.
“Ok. everyone needs to take a deep breath…” Garth wrote in a second post about the Con.

Hollywood’s bloated egos require some manner of annual deflation, especially during Oscar season. For more than 40 years, that has been the objective of the Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies, as they’re (un)affectionately known, have celebrated the best of the worst in film since 1980. The dubious honor has been accepted by such self-deprecating luminaries as Halle Berry (Catwoman), Ben Affleck (Gigli) and Sandra Bullock (All About Steve).
But evolving sensibilities have recently cast a shadow over the operation. In January, in response to social media backlash, the group rescinded its 2023 nomination of a 12-year-old actress (Firestarter star Ryan Kiera Armstrong). Not a year earlier, a fresh win for Bruce Willis and a decades-old nomination for Shelley Duvall were taken back — the former in light of his aphasia diagnosis and the latter for revelations of on-set mistreatment by The Shining director Stanley Kubrick. The Razzies began as a way to poke fun at fame.

Showgirls stands as one of the most critically-reviled movies of all time, a 1995 erotic thriller that starred Elizabeth Berkley as Nomi Malone, a young woman in search of her big break. While made with the best of intentions, Showgirls was a box-office bomb. And over the years, new generations have continued to find fault with the controversial flick. Interestingly enough, Berkley wasn’t the original choice to play Nomi. A-lister Charlize Theron was once in the running for the lead role.

Paul Verhoeven's 1995 sex-tastic schlockfest "Showgirls" has finally earned cult status after years of reappraisal, but unfortunately, it's too little too late for some of the film's stars, especially Elizabeth Berkley, whose career never quite recovered from the film's disastrous reception. Verhoeven has been vocal over the years about Berkley's performance, repeating in multiple interviews that he felt like she shouldered far too much blame because he had asked her to be as over-the-top as possible. (Verhoeven? Over-the-top? Never.)
While Berkley's performance is way too much all the time, it makes sense that Verhoeven had asked that of her and was well aware of the effect while calling the shots. There are plenty of other big and ridiculous performances in the film, and the entire thing is an exercise in excess, but Berkley has frequently been the target of the film's harshest criticisms. The lifecycle of Paul Verhoeven's 1995 film "Showgirls" is fascinating. It was to be the widest release ever given to a film rated Nc-17, a rating that caused a great deal of chatter. Its star, Elizabeth Berkley, was best known at the time for playing the straightlaced Jessie on the kid-friendly sitcom "Saved by the Bell," so her presence in an all-nude, sex-soaked Las Vegas melodrama raised a few eyebrows. A tie-in coffee table book was authored, selling "Showgirls" as upscale, big-budget adult entertainment for a new age. Upon its release, however, the 45 million bonanza immediately drew negative reviews, with critics bristling at its dumb dialogue and male-gaze/onanism perspective. It currently holds a 23 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film eked out a mere 20 million before flopping down completely. "Showgirls" immediately became a joke.

Netflix’s new original Marilyn Monroe movie, Blonde, marks the streaming service’s first Nc-17 rated movie, due to its graphic depiction of sexual assault (as well as a point-of-view shot of a fetus in the womb). The Motion Picture Association’s most severe rating has long been known as a both a box office killer and a publicity gift, but this movie from director Andrew Dominik doesn’t have to worry about theater tickets.
Blonde will, after all, be seen primarily by people at home via Netflix, and the movie’s grim and gorgeously-shot story is shaping up to be a critical lightning rod, bringing it all sorts of added attention. But will it bring more prestige to the Nc-17 rating’s long and controversial legacy?
Below is a small collection of the most infamous—and therefore must-see—Nc-17 movies.

If you're wondering what "The Idol" is selling, that's sex. That's what they're selling. At least, that's according to Jane Adam's character in the latest teaser for the upcoming HBO series from Grammy Award-winning artist Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, "Euphoria" creator Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim.
The six-episode drama is set to follow Lily-Rose Depp as a pop singer named Jocelyn that enters a romance with an enigmatic self-help guru played by Tesfaye who turns out to be a cult leader. And though we don't know much about the plot beyond that for what's being called "the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood" or when we can finally expect the series premiere, a brand new teaser has just been released that officially unveils members of the cast for the first time.

It’s all about money, drugs and orgies in the first trailer for Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Sam Levinson’s new HBO series The Idol.
Dropping Sunday, the minute-and-a-half teaser features the first footage from the upcoming show starring Lily-Rose Depp, which is pitched in the trailer as being “from the sick and twisted minds” of its co-creators.
Topless women, popped champagne bottles and a car ride under the California sun to a blindingly white mansion open the wild teaser, which features only a few lines from its stars.
“Lick it. Spank it. Drop it,” a woman can be heard saying over scenes of Tesfaye punching the air and Depp surrounded by dancers, before words flash across the screen promising, “The sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”
“Why don’t you just be yourself,” The Weeknd’s character at one point asks Depp’s.

HBO and the Weeknd have released a teaser for “The Idol,” the network’s upcoming dramatic series starring the singer and Lily-Rose Depp.
The footage begins announcing the “sick and twisted minds” of series co-creators Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and Sam Levinson, who is also behind the network’s hit series “Euphoria.” The teaser then launches into a hyperactive montage of Hollywood mansions, colorful parties, cocaine ingestion and fast cars.
“More, more, more, orgy!” yells a voice in the trailer.
The trailer concludes with a tense interaction between Depp’s character and an unseen figure, supposedly Tesfaye’s character, that asks, “Do you trust me?”
“Not really,” Depp’s character says with a smile.
Co-created by Tesfaye, Levinson and Reza Fahim, “The Idol” is set against the backdrop of the music industry. The plot follows a self-help guru and cult leader who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.

“From the sick and twisted minds of Abel and Sam Levinson,” as the first footage begins, comes HBO’s “The Idol.” Abel, of course, being Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd.
During the New Jersey stop on his “After Hours Til Dawn” tour on Saturday night, The Weeknd debuted an exclusive first look at the upcoming limited series created by Tesfaye, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim. No more pencils, no more books. No more Saved By The Bell, either, as the rebooted sitcom’s cancellation by Peacock is now in effect.
It comes only a month after the comedy won Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards. It’s also something of a surprise, in that the first season of the show reportedly did well for the streamer. The reboot featured a new class of kids at Bayside High and the return of series originals Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, Mario Lopez and Lark Voorhies, who was a guest star in a season one episode.
So far, only Gosselaar has taken to social media to express his views on the cancellation. We’ll update as more come in.
So disappointed by this news. So many talented individuals in all departments creating something original from a reboot. Respect and admiration to everyone involved and thanks to the viewers.

Showgirls will always go down as one of the worst moves ever made. Whether it’s the random acts of Lesbianism from Nomi to a talk about tits, there’s no shortage of bad scenes from the unforgettable movie. Still, Showgirls is a cult classic, and sometimes a cult classic gets a sequel when the fanbase for the original film is big enough. Birdemic has Birdemic 2. Jaws has Jaws Revenge. Samurai Cop has Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance. And we’ve now come to one of the most unnecessary sequels on the planet, Showgirls 2: Penny’s From Heaven. Now, Elizabeth Berkley’s Nomi

It’s hard to forget the disaster known as Showgirls. This raunchy, misogynistic, sex-fest is mostly memorable for its horrendous dialogue and acting, non-sensical plot, and just the total absurdity of the entire film in general. At the center of this craziness is Nomi Malone, played by Elizabeth Berkley, who arrives in Las Vegas to become a top showgirl. The film showcases an intimate side of the seedy world of the business, with the marquee dancer and her powerful boyfriend at the center of the situation. Within the first ten minutes of Showgirls, Nomi Malone starts off badly as a character.

The lines between what Jessie Spano and Nomi Malone did in Las Vegas are blurred during Season 2 of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell revival, which pays homage to Elizabeth Berkley Lauren‘s iconic role in the cult classic Showgirls.
Released in 1995 with a rare Nc-17 rating, the erotic drama centered on a street-smart drifter (Lauren) who ventured to Sin City to become a showgirl. Though the movie was widely panned at the time and made nary a dent at the box office, it has since found a second life on basic cable, where it has played ad nauseam since the mid ’90s.

There’s rarely been a TV moment as purely joyous, strange and poignant as the final scene of “Girls5eva,” Peacock’s new comedy about a ‘90s girl group reuniting 20 years later to recapture their old magic. In trying to re-create the spark of the beloved teen TV series “Saved by the Bell,” Peacock’s revival had to find the right balance of comfort food and innovation, making a show fit for 2021 that didn’t completely leave the ’90s behind. And then there was the casting, which had proved so important for the original sitcom, launching the careers of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez. It was a tough task, but at the very least, showrunner Tracey Wigfield knew who she wanted to play the omnipresent role of Bayside High School’s most popular girl.
