I spent the first 37 years of my life on the East Coast, and even there, I knew who Sam Rubin was.
The beloved Ktla Los Angeles entertainment reporter, who died May 10 at age 64, was a Hollywood fixture for over 30 years, beloved, trusted and respected. Drawing heartfelt tributes ranging from industry veterans like Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler and rising stars like Charmaine Bingwa, I’ve never seen such an outpouring for an entertainment journalist since perhaps Roger Ebert in 2013. Sam greeted everyone with the same infectious enthusiasm and genuine curiosity, whether they were industry stalwarts or nervous newcomers. He was synonymous with Los Angeles but he was also known well outside of Southern California through his reporting for ITV and Australia’s 9 Network.

For Johnny Depp, acting was the last thing on his mind before he ended up in Wes Craven’s Nightmare on Elm Street. The feature ended up giving Depp the successful Hollywood career that he currently enjoys. But the actor was very fortunate to end up in the horror flick despite Craven’s unfavorable opinion towards him.

Audiences first saw Depp on the big screen in Craven’s 1984 classic Nightmare on Elm Street. The actor ended up being cast as the boyfriend to the film’s final girl Nancy Thompson, played by Heather Langenkamp. It was a role he acquired that even Depp would tell people was a fluke.

Franchise icon Heather Langenkamp has made it no secret over the years that she’d love to play Nancy Thompson in another A Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Langenkamp of course played the fan favorite role in the original classic as well as sequel Dream Warriors, and she later returned to the franchise for the final time as herself in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
Is it time for a legacy sequel, now that’s it been 40 years since the franchise debuted?
Speaking at a recent Q&a event hosted by Nightmare on Film Street, Heather Langenkamp made it clear that her interest in playing the role one more time hasn’t waned over the years.
“In my imagination, I have several legacy sequels happening at the same time,” Langenkamp told the crowd of Elm Street fans. “She’s a great character. How could you say no?”

Nancy Thompson remains one of the greatest final girls in horror movie history. She is also one of the most evolved, receiving a full character arc in part because the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise needed it and because her portrayer, Heather Langenkamp, is just that great in the role. But Langenkamp hasn’t portrayed Nancy in three decades (not that the franchise has exactly been boiling). So is it time to bring back Nancy Thomspon for a full Nightmare on Elm Street revival? Langenkamp sees no reason why not.
Appearing on the Nightmare on Film Street podcast, Heather Langenkamp said that if she had the opportunity to reprise Nancy Thompson, she absolutely would. “God, yes. I mean, of course. She’s a great character. How could you say no?. I just need somebody to get that off the ground. Especially considering Nightmare on Elm Street Part 7, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.

In a special 40th-anniversary episode of the Nightmare on Film Street podcast, Heather Langenkamp, who famously portrayed Nancy Thompson in the iconic A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), reveals her eagerness to return to the nightmare-scape of her legendary role.
Langenkamp reminisced about the profound connections formed on set, especially with the late Wes Craven, the mastermind behind the series. She shared a nostalgic reflection on her character’s evolution through the films:
“We get to see and follow her in a really natural way, through being a teenager here and then being a young adult in Nightmare on Elm Street Part Three [1987], and then being a woman and a mother. And it’s very rare to have a character who can span that many different experiences, not only for just a woman, but for a person going through so much experience.”

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

A fan favorite here in the horror world, Samara Weaving has made her mark on the genre with films including Mayhem, The Babysitter and Ready or Not, and she’s also appeared in two iconic horror franchises to date with roles in both “Ash vs. Evil Dead” and Scream VI.
What franchise would Samara Weaving like to appear in next? It’s a question Collider asked the actress at SXSW over the weekend. Her answer? A Nightmare on Elm Street!

Production on MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl (watch it Here) and X (watch that one at This Link), is said to have wrapped last May, around the time that production company and distributor A24 unveiled a first look image from the movie that shows franchise star Mia Goth alongside singer Halsey. (That image can be seen at the bottom of this article.) Things have been pretty quiet on the MaXXXine front since then, aside from news of a lawsuit being filed by a background actor – but now, thanks to the YouTube interview show What’s Under the Bed?, we have a bit of a status update from West, who also happened to show off a prop from the film during his interview.
At about the 26:37 point of the What’s Under the Bed? interview, West is asked about the props he has kept from the movies he has made.

Love it, hate it, or love to hate it, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has left an impression on viewers. With its acerbic (and maybe muddled) allegory about social and economic class in the UK, the movie is a big twisty swing from the writer-director of Promising Young Woman. It also features star Barry Keoghan going there. In some scenes, there constitutes prancing around a luxurious manor in his birthday suit, galloping as free and liberated as a baby elephant charging a watering hole.
In others, there consists of the literal water (and other fluids therein) pooling around the hole of a bathtub. You know the scene: After Felix (Jacob Elordi), the wealthy patron and object of obsession for Keoghan’s Oliver Quick, is spied pleasuring himself in the bath, Ollie sneaks in afterward to slurp up the remainder that didn’t go down the drain. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) is headed back into the world of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, and Flanagan has announced that production has wrapped.
Perhaps what’s more notable here is that Flanagan’s announcement thread highlights what to expect. Or rather, what not to expect: The Life of Chuck won’t be a horror movie.
That’s probably not a surprise to those familiar with the source short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. Many actors find early success in the horror genre. Jennifer Aniston battled an evil, pun-loving Irish creature in "Leprechaun" years before she landed "Friends," for example. Charlize Theron's first role came in "Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest." Even "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" boasted not one, but two future Oscar winners in its cast, Matthew McConaughey and Renée Zellweger.
That said, not everyone manages to go on to achieve that same level of success. For every Michelle Williams ("Halloween H20: 20 Years Later") and Leonardo DiCaprio ("Critters 3"), there are countless horror stars whose careers don't reach the same level of renown. It can be especially interesting to look back at teen horror films, which often feature ensemble casts, to see who made it and who didn't. The 1994 horror movie "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" was the seventh film in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series, and featured one of the cleverest conceits for a horror sequel. The vicious supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger — able to kill his victims from inside their dreams — somehow escaped the surly bounds of fiction and began stalking the actors and filmmakers who made the original "The Nightmare on Elm Street" a decade prior. Heather Langenkamp appears as herself, as does Robert Englund, John Saxon, Craven, and New Line Cinema bigwig Robert Shaye. Langenkamp did have a young child in 1994 — her late son Daniel Atticus Anderson was born in 1991 — but in the movie, Langenkamp's child was named Jacob and played by actor Miko Hughes.

Horror enthusiasts have another reason to celebrate as Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Life of Chuck‘ takes shape. Initially teasing fans with big names such as Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, and Karen Gillan, the excitement intensified with the inclusion of horror legends Heather Langenkamp and Matthew Lillard.
It’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first collaboration between Flanagan and Langenkamp. They previously teamed up for Netflix’s ‘The Midnight Club,’ which aired back in 2022. While Langenkamp’s return to Flanagan’s fold has garnered attention, the addition of Matthew Lillard, famed for roles in ‘Scream’ and ‘Thirteen Ghosts,’ further beefs up the roster.
And the surprises don’t end there. Mia Sara, remembered fondly from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Out,’ makes a significant comeback after a hiatus from the limelight. Others joining the project include David Dastmalchian, Harvey Guillén, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Antonio Raul Corbo,...

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). In the world of film, you will have icons that appear with a few manufactured into something better than they are. The Net and the Hollywood star system of the past do that today with some questionable ability and content on both sides of the camera being hailed as something special. The icons of the horror genre rise to the top like Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing. Their names are often above titles of films even reduced to the use of the surname as in Karloff and Lugosi without losing box office appeal. Entering this realm is the feature documentary of actor Robert Englund simply called Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.
I honestly was not a huge Freddy fan towards the end of the A Nightmare On Elm Street series of films because for me the stories became set pieces for effects.

Nancy Thompson is one of the great final girls in slasher history, overcoming Freddy Krueger while her friends ended up with knives through the chest and being tossed around bedroom walls. With just A Nightmare on Elm Street, portrayer Heather Langenkamp began getting call after call offering her other horror roles, but all of those were nothing more than, as she put it, a “Taco Bell burrito” – and she means that in a bad way!
Appearing on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast (via MovieWeb), Heather Langenkamp said her love for her trademark character actually helped keep her away from the spotlight, despite the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street. “Like there’s never as good a part as Nancy. It would just be hard to do that. It’d be like, you know, having this great meal with everything there, and then you go and have a Taco Bell burrito.

The "Nightmare on Elm Street" film series was a hotbed for emerging talent. Many of the directors in the franchise would go on to prolific or interesting careers. Chuck Russell, director of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" would go on to make Hollywood blockbusters like "The Mask," "Eraser," and "The Scorpion King." Renny Harlin, who directed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" would likewise enter the Hollywood mainstream with films like "Predator 2," "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," and "Cutthroat Island." Jack Sholder, Stephen Hopkins, and Rachael Talalay also emerged from the series' directors pool.
One can also find a few rising actors at the start of their careers throughout the Freddy Krueger movies. Famously, a young Johnny Depp starred in Wes Craven's 1984 original, and, for "Dream Warriors," Patricia Arquette made her cinematic debut.

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.
Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.
Other big draws included Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), pro wrestling legend Mick Foley, The Walking Dead‘s Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Chandler Riggs, Emily Kinney, and Katelyn Nacon, Danielle Harris (Halloween), Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), and a Fright Night reunion with Chris Sarandon,...

Wes Craven was inspired to write his 1984 horror hit "A Nightmare on Elm Street" after a real-life case of what was called Sudden Unexplained Death Syndrome that, according to several articles in the Los Angeles Times, was afflicting America's Hmong refugee population. People would suffer from horrifying nightmares and soon became afraid to fall asleep. When they did finally lose consciousness, they mysteriously died. The deaths remained unexplained for years. Craven extrapolated a horror movie from these cases, envisioning a nightmarish killer who occupied multiple people's dreams. If the killer killed you in your dream, you died in the waking world.
Craven named his killer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) and explained that Freddy was the ghost of a neighborhood child murderer who had been killed by a group of local parents -- exercising vigilante justice -- years earlier. Somehow, Freddy passed into the realm of the supernatural. Now he "lives" as a burned-up,...

Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment is thrilled to be releasing Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story. The film will premiere exclusively on the Icon Film Channel from 2nd October 2023, with Special Collector’s Edition Blu-ray and Tvod/Est available from 6th November 2023. From the makers of Pennywise: The Story of It and the widely-anticipated movie RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop comes an all-new documentary, celebrating the legacy and career of one our generation’s most beloved horror icons, the legendary Robert Englund. Shooting to super-stardom with his revolutionary portrayal of Freddy Krueger in the ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’ franchise – a moment without doubt as visceral to the horror genre as Chaney’s werewolf or Karloff’s ground-breaking realisation of Frankenstein’s monster – Englund has firmly earned his place in the pantheon of horror movie legends. The documentary features a host of horror icons including Robert Englund himself, as well as...

‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.
Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

Freddy Krueger has a choice to make. On one side is Lori (Monica Keena), the woman he had been antagonizing throughout the movie Freddy vs. Jason, along with her wounded boyfriend Will (Jason Ritter). On the other is Kia (Kelly Rowland), Lori’s grouchy friend.
After dithering for a moment, Freddy (Robert Englund) looks at the Kia and smiles. “How sweet,” he says to the Black woman. “Dark meat.”
Remembering seeing the movie when it was released 20 years ago, Kumail Nanjiani described the audience’s groans at that line. “People were disappointed in Freddy Krueger,” Nanjiani recalled. “We’re okay with you murdering children with your needle gloves,” he quipped. “But racism?”
Nanjiani’s bit captures the public perception of Freddy when Freddy vs Jason premiered on August 15, 2003. Even though the character officially died in 1991’s Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, the terrifying monster of Wes Craven’s 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street...

Too many of us in the horror world, it doesn’t get much bigger than Robert Englund. The man has haunted many of our dreams (and nightmares) and is an absolute legend. So you can imagine my joy when I was approach about interviewing the man, the myth and the legend. But not only that, it would be for the release of Hollywood Dreams and Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story. As a massive fan of the man (who isn’t), I found myself absolutely giddy with anticipation, as it meant I could ask him anything about his career. What followed is one of my favorite interviews, just for how present Robert is and generous with his time. We went about five minutes over and I could have talked to him significantly longer. He reveals what he considers to be his most underrated movies as well as full-on pitching a sequel...

True '80s horror kids rarely agree on anything. What's the best "Friday the 13th" rip-off? Some say "The Burning," some say "Sleepaway Camp." Who is the better slasher villain; Freddy, Jason, or Michael Myers? You'll never get them to agree on anything, except maybe one question: What is the best 'Nightmare on Elm Street' sequel?
There are stans for all of them, even the notoriously bizarre "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge" (especially that one since it has grown in popularity as a favorite among the LGBTQ+ community), but most will say the one Freddy sequel to really get it right was Part 3, "Dream Warriors" which brought back Heather Langenkamp's Nancy to face down Freddy once more, this time backed up by an army of juvenile delinquents who have had enough of being tortured in their dreams by this Christmas sweater-wearing, child-killing, nightmare demon weirdo.

Plot: Throughout his career, Englund starred in many well-known movies, but shot to super-stardom with his portrayal of supernatural serial killer Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise. This unique and intimate portrait captures the man behind the glove and features interviews with Englund and his wife Nancy, Lin Shaye, Eli Roth, Tony Todd, Heather Langenkamp and more.
Review: I remember reading Robert Englund’s Autobiography when I was in college. It was a wonderful telling of Englund’s life and career and painted the picture of a humble thespian who just wants to perform. So I perked up when hearing they were creating a full-length documentary. Especially since Englund had lived a decade of life since the book had been released. To say that Englund is a god-like figure in the horror realm would be underselling it. He’s beloved by fans everywhere in a way that few actors manage to achieve.

Bloody Disgusting is celebrating the 76th birthday of horror legend Robert Englund on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, and in fact, the party has already begun over on Screambox!
The Bloody Disgusting-powered horror streaming service just added Three classic Robert Englund films to the lineup, and that’s only the beginning of our epic celebration.
Over on Screambox, beginning today, you can now stream A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), plus Tobe Hooper movies Night Terrors (1993) and The Mangler (1995)!
Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street is of course the original horror classic that introduced audiences to Freddy Krueger, the dream demon that Robert Englund became a household name through playing across multiple films. Night Terrors, almost a full decade later, saw Englund playing the Marquis de Sade for director Tobe Hooper, while Hooper’s The Mangler brought Englund into the world of Stephen King. The Mangler is one of Englund’s personal...
