Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Not bad, but not wow
Overall, my impression of the movie was mixed.
I was truly impressed by the stunning graphics, which brought the world of Pandora to life in vivid detail. The breathtaking scenery and mesmerizing creature designs made for some truly awe-inspiring moments, particularly in the scenes where characters rode on the back of creatures through the air or underwater. These sequences felt immersive and made me feel like I was there alongside them.
However, despite the visual spectacle, I found myself frustrated by the pacing of the film. The lengthy exposition took too much time to set up the story, with over an hour devoted to establishing the characters' backgrounds and the world they inhabit. This prolonged introduction felt excessive and detracted from the overall momentum of the plot. Additionally, there were several instances of filler content, particularly in the form of predictable teenage drama, which added little to the overarching narrative.
Ultimately, while I was captivated by the movie's impressive visuals, I couldn't help but feel that the story itself fell short. If not for the stunning graphics, I would have rated the film a 4.
Dashing Through the Snow (2023)
This is THE WORST Christmas movie I ever watched
I don't even know where to begin because this movie is an utter failure from all points of view.
Initially, I was attracted by the cast, but as soon as the movie started, my disappointment kicked in. Every actor was painfully goofy and unappealing, except for the little girl and her mother.
The so-called Santa Claus was nothing short of a joke. Far from the iconic image of Santa, he's a middle-aged guy with a weird beard, dressed in outrageously ugly clothes, and behaving like a complete buffoon. He looks outrageously fake! This is an outright insult to the cherished tradition of Santa.
And don't get me started on how much this Santa blabbers, spouting a load of idiotic things to the point of irritation! He even has the audacity to claim he hails from the North Pole, but his appearance screams anything but authenticity.
I didn't like the setting either because everything looked dry, and a Christmas without snow lacks the essence of the holiday spirit.
What truly exasperated me was the shameless promotion of progressive ideas, forcefully shoved down the audience's throat. I'm not against progressivism, but having Santa talk about therapy has absolutely nothing to do with the Christmas spirit. Christmas is about joy, hope, and happiness, not a depressed Santa. Some modern ideas should stay far away from our cherished traditions, especially when it comes to the most beloved holiday of the year. Let Christmas be Christmas, for God's sake!
All in all, it stands as the most horrible Christmas movie I've ever watched. Its attempt to infuse a modern touch into Christmas was a complete disaster. This movie is a poor, cheap adaptation of the best and most beloved holiday of the year.
A Christmas Carol (2009)
It was a pleasure to watch it
"A Christmas Carol" is one of my favorite Christmas stories and every year in December, when the Christmas is approaching, I rewatch the movie or re-read the book. This year, I decided to give this version of the movie a chance, and I believe it was a great choice.
The film was very well done. Despite being an animated film, the characters and landscapes are so realistically depicted that, initially, I mistook them for real actors and places. The sound and the graphics are fantastic! It felt like I was transposed in the movie and I could see the action through the character's eyes, especially in the scenes of high speed traveling.
The only reasons I rated it a 9 instead of a 10 are that some scenes felt excessively long and somewhat nonsensical, particularly in the third part of the movie. Also, it bothered me that in some scenes, the sun was shining brightly even if it was snowing.
Anyway, overall it was a good movie which I'd enjoy watching again in the following years.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
The WORST!
This is undeniably the worst movie that I watched recently, and one of the worst that I've ever watched.
This so-called "movie" is pure non-sense. It's nothing but a bunch of scenes put one after another with seemingly no purpose. That's all!
The plot, if one could call it that, is often cut off by scenes with insignificant details which seem to be added just to confuse the audience. The movie was probably meant to be a comedy, but there was not even a scene that I found amusing. I got extremely bored watching it and it took me weeks to convince myself to give it a chance and watch it till the end. To add insult to injury, all the goofiness in the movie looks extremely silly to the point that it becomes exasperating.
In the end, I regretted that I forced myself to watch this idiocy up to the end. It was a total waste of time! I would rate it ZERO if I could.
The Skeleton Dance (1929)
Good for its time
It's a nice short animation considering that it was made almost 100 years ago. The only reason I gave it an 8 is that I didn't really understand the plot or the point of the story. Other than that, I'm impressed that such a fluent and fluid animation could be made in 1929. I wonder what an impact it had on people or kids who watched it back then. It was probably revolutionary. Watching it was like a travel back in time at the beginning of the cartoons. I watched it on Halloween because it seemed to fit the Halloween theme and I liked it. Recommend to those interested in veeeery old animations.
Halloweentown (1998)
Average
I wanted to watch a Halloween movie and I picked this one, but I think that it wasn't the best choice. This movie was average from all points of view - the acting, the costumes, the setting, and the plot.
The acting was poor and in many cases, it looked fake or forced. The costumes were poorly made and looked cheap. The setting was bad, and it looked fake and cheap too. And the plot was too cheesy and easily predictable.
There were some cute parts to it which I liked, but the negative aspects of the movie outweigh the positives. I think that it could have been a better movie if they invested more money and passion in it.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Lovely and soothing.
I'm so glad that I chose to watch this movie. I must admit that I didn't watch the old one so I don't have a term of comparison, preconceptions or expectations for it. I took it as it is and enjoyed it.
The movie was lovely, heartwarming and soothing and it could really transport me to a magical world and for a short time. It made me relax and forget about the day to day stress. If a movie can do this, it's definitely a good movie in my opinion.
I understand that some people may feel nostalgic about the old version which probably marked their childhood or younger years. But personally, I watched this version as an adult for the first time and I enjoyed it. I don't get the point why we always need to compare the old and new version. How about giving new movies a chance?
Cinderella (2015)
The best!
I absolutely love this live action adaptation of Cinderella! The choice of actors and their performances, the costumes, and the scenery, all fit in together perfectly. The movie delivers a plethora of emotional scenes that truly touched my heart.
Lily James is the perfect fit for the role of Cinderella - she's beautiful, gracious and has a pure and innocent look. Her appearance in the iconic blue dress is simply breathtaking and it's by far the most beautiful costume I've ever seen in a film. The attention to detail, from the palace to the decorations and the attire of other characters, adds to the overall charm of the movie.
In my opinion, this live-action is one of the best Disney movies I've had the pleasure of watching. It sets a high standard that may be hard for others to match.
Mulan (2020)
Personally, I loved the movie.
Personally, I loved the movie.
It's vivid, captivating, inspiring and has a nice storyline. I love the fact that despite being an action movie, there is no blood and no gross scene.
I think that the movie depicts pretty well the life of people living in ancient times in China. Women had limited rights in ancient and medieval times, not only in China but in many regions around the world. I like the fact that the movie depicts the reality of those times and illustrates how difficult it was for women to succeed back then. Without that social context, we wouldn't have this story and wouldn't be able to follow the growth and transformation of Mulan. And I also think that it's important for nowadays people to be able to make a comparison between the social contexts back then and right now, because this is the only way in which we can realize how much we have changed and evolved as society.
The Lion King (2019)
Heartwarming
It's one of the Disney movies that I really liked. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did.
The action is well-paced and the storyline is captivating. I never got bored watching it. The movie doesn't contain too many unnecessary scenes which makes it pleasant to watch. Not to mention, the visuals are outstanding, and the animals appear remarkably realistic. You could easily mistake them for real characters.
I was impressed by Simba and Nala's background stories and courage. Their character development was inspiring, and I appreciated the moments of humor that were woven into their portrayal.
It's a heartwarming movie which you can enjoy watching with your entire family.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Disappointing.
I can't believe I forced myself to watch an hour of... nothing. There was absolutely no action in the first half of the movie and it was utterly boring.
Then, in the second half, suddenly the plot speeds up so much that you feel like you're watching a horse race. Everyone is everywhere, there's chaos, and it becomes challenging to keep up with the story.
I genuinely felt that there was far too much unnecessary drama, and the conclusion came abruptly.
Overall, the movie lacked a good balance. Instead of wasting an hour on tedious and uneventful scenes, I wish it had maintained a more consistent pace and built up more suspense.
I'm very disappointed. Watching it was a complete waste of time. I can't recommend it.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Too much singing!
Ok, I get it, it's a musical, but man, there's waaay too much singing, which makes the movie kind of boring. It felt like they sang for like a good third of the movie, maybe even more, and honestly, the songs were kinda meh, dull and pointless.
Now, the cast, ugh. Dan Stevens in the main male role? Seriously? He didn't give off any royal vibes. And in my opinion, he looked better as the hairy beast than as the prince.
And let's talk about the film set - it was gloomy and kinda dull. And don't even get me started on the character makeup - it was just plain weird, ridiculous, or even hideous, I would say.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
I liked the movie but some parts could have been better.
I decided to give it a try due to all the controversial opinions I had heard about it.
What I enjoyed the most about the movie were the underwater visuals. In contrast, the scenery on land was quite disappointing and dull.
The choice of the cast was interesting, but it left me with mixed feelings.
Halle Bailey is super sweet, and she makes a beautiful mermaid. Even though her hair isn't bright red, I felt that her hair color in the movie looked more natural, which is why I liked it very much. Her appearance surprised me a bit at first, to be honest, but as the movie went on, I increasingly felt that she was a perfect fit for the role.
On the other hand, I disliked Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric). His acting was dull and seemed fake. Not to mention, he wasn't even handsome to me. And I didn't understand his background story. Was he adopted by that royal family? If so, how did he end up there? I wish Disney made his story clearer and easier to understand.
I did enjoy the movie, but there were some parts that could have been better.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Nice movie overall.
Nice movie overall.
I must say that I'm not familiar with Agatha Christie's novels. Therefore, I watched it without any preconceptions or expectations, and I enjoyed the story. Detective Poirot is really clever and he reminds me of other briliant detectives I've seen in other movies or animations.
One thing I didn't like was the fact that there were some discrepancies in some scenes. As a result, I decreased my rating by one point. For example, some characters went outside on a cold winter day without wearing a coat or warm attire. That looked very unnatural to me. Oh, and there's one more thing I didn't enjoy watching - it was Johnny Depp's acting.
Cruella (2021)
I'm glad I gave it a chance.
I didn't expect to enjoy the movie as much as I did, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. The movie left me pleasantly surprised!
The film was dynamic, captivating, and a lot of fun. Its storyline was refreshingly simple and easy to follow, making it a pleasant watch.
I appreciated the way the characters were developed, and Cruella's determination, motivation, and intelligence proved to be truly inspiring.
What I loved most about the movie, however, was the brilliant choice of soundtrack and how it was masterfully used to create atmosphere and convey the characters' emotions.
Overall, it's a fantastic movie.
