Don't Tell a Soul (2020)
No, tell a lot of people!
This is a fantastic, well paced movie. For just under 90 minutes not a single scene is wasted. Give it a watch!
The Night Clerk (2020)
A character study with solid acting
Make no mistake, The Night Clerk is not a groundbreaking film. There aren't loud explosions or jump scares or gory violence people overusing profanity to try and force the characters on you. In other words, you can put this on for just about anybody and they won't be screaming for you to turn it off. Of course, if you need all those things to be entertained you will be extremely bored watching this. The film centers around our main character and the entire plot builds around him. I won't go into any details because you can read the synopsis. I though the 2 lead actors did a great job. There were some issues with pacing in the mid to second half of the movie and pretty much all the other actors were either passable (detective) or useless (mother, husband, shift change guy). All in all though the ending was satisfying for what you started. Again, this will not win many awards. But it's a decent family friendly or date night movie that kept my wife and I entertained.
I, Tonya (2017)
Even the worst deserve better
Let's dive right into it: the acting was not good. The script did this movie no favors but there's really no excuse. If you're a good actor you shouldn't have to convince me you're a bad person by cursing every other word and if you're a good person by not cursing at all. Life is more complicated than that and, frankly, the people in this movie deserved better. In this day and age if you need to curse that much in a movie you're script either isn't very good and/or your characters are one dimensional. The language and behavior of all the characters make it really hard to care about these very real people. I would never watch this again and if I was any of the people portrayed in this movie I'd distance myself from it.
Get Out (2017)
A modern masterpiece
Great casting choices- Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield, Catherine Keener, Caleb Landry Jones just to name a few. First time director Jordan Peele delivers a powerful debut. The symbolism and pacing felt so effortless and yet so well thought out. I still tell people how good this movie is.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
A condescending, disjointed embarrassment to middle America...
If it wasn't for the big names to carry this movie it wouldn't deserve a third of the critical praise it has received. I can't even fully describe to you, dear movie goer, where this movie is flawed. First of all, these characters in real life wouldn't talk like this. The vast majority of middle America doesn't curse this much in regular every day life. There isn't a lot of ppl that live in small town USA that walk around dropping a GD and an F in casual conversation at the dinner table talking to a priest, at the dentist office, sitting on a swing talking to a cop dying of cancer. That was the first major problem I have with the story. Like seriously WTF? The characters have no authenticity to them. And in a movie where character development is key, I found myself struggling for resolve. I mean the woman's daughter was raped and murdered for goodness sake. So that's major issue if you can't find something else in this woman's life to identify with. Furthermore, I can't help but wonder if making this a fictitious town was intentional or if the director actually wanted to use the town that they filmed in but city officials vetoed that once they heard the dialogue. Honestly you're better off watching an episode of Dateline and then following that with the Departed. Those 2 things make more sense than this movie.
