Dont Judge A Book By Its Cover
10 December 2018
When you hear of the film Dangerous Minds, you instantly leap to Coolio's 1995 smash hit Gangsters Paradise. Not only was that the best selling single of the year that accompanied the film, but the film gained a cult status. High school films peaked in the 1990s but Dangerous Minds stands out from the rest, it goes in depth of the struggles faced by students caught in between school and gang life. So, from the beginning, Dangerous Minds is loosely based on the book My Posse Don't Do Homework. Michelle Phiffer stars as LouAnne Johnson, after serving nine years in the marines she fancies a new challenge in teaching. The principle has assigned LouAnne to class with students who are described "unteachable" and "rejects from hell", but in reality, these students suffer from a wide range of social and educational problems. LouAnne aims to open them up academically with teaching them karate and bribing with candy bars. The humbling aspect of this film is seeing that when kids from a disadvantaged background get shown care, they creatively open up in a number of ways. This film should make you look differently at the social stereotype these teenagers are often given.

The Boy Really Did Cry Wolf
9 December 2018
To be honest, I wasn't excited when I saw this being the next horror film in my watchlist however, I was quick to judge. Yeah, okay, the film is your standard run of the mill slasher, it has a very late 90's vibe to it and is very predictable at times, but the acting standard is decent and the underlining mystery keeps you glued. It Is not the best horror film in the world, but it delivers what you expect and is on par with other similar movies. Moving school's is always a big deal, but moving to a school in another country is a whole other intensity level. Owen has just left the United Kingdom to go to a fancy preppy school in America, the transition is not helped when a local girl is found murdered on the same day. Dodger is the typical American high school girl who's also having an affair with a teacher, she decides to play "cry wolf" with Owen and a bunch of classmates. The group spread a rumor that the killer is called wolf who stalks his victims on campus, they also describe in graphic detail how he murders each victim. It soon becomes apparent that no one believes a liar and when the lie becomes the truth, the gang need to work out how to survive their sadistic made up plan.

Cruelty Is Intended
6 December 2018
The darkly twisted approach to a romantic film is what sets Cruel Intentions apart from the rest. The old saying about sibling rivalry is pushed to the extreme in this film and the damage of teenage lives due having no morals or conscience. Set in Upper East side New York lives Sebastian, a cunning serial womanizer who has slept with the majority of the city, and his sister Kathryn, a beautiful yet evil and manipulative young woman. Getting fed up with the local women, Sebastian sets his sights on a new challenge, her name is Annabelle. The headmaster's daughter is virginal and believes openly in only sleeping with the man you love. The evil side of Kathryn comes out when she notices that Sebastian is falling for Annabelle and she makes a wager, if he fails to sleep with Annabelle she will get his prize possession, his vintage 1956 Jaguar XK140, but if Seb does sleep with Annabelle he will get the one thing he desires most, Kathryn. Every aspect of the film is beautiful, from the cinematography to the acting. No wonder it gained its following.

Carrie Is A Class Of Her Own
6 December 2018
Brian De Palmer gave us some high-quality thrillers throughout the 1970s and Carrie is the best one he has directed. A man of such quality teaming up with horror genius Stephen King is only going to create a masterpiece. So, the film centers around Carrie White, a bullied misfit with no friends, no confidence and unaware of her telekinesis. Not only does Carrie endure torment at school, but she also puts up with her psychotic mother's abuse at home. One day at school the bullies push Carrie too far and she snaps, they turn the shy teenager into a vengeful young woman hell-bent on revenge. The final 40 minutes of this film when Carrie's full powers are on display, is one of the most iconic scenes in horror history. Whilst this film brings a dark satire to the high school horror, it also touches upon serious social issues such as bullying. The power of this movie brings you so close to Carrie, you can relate to her, share sympathy and can understand why she did just snap.

More Than Just A Horror... Its a Piece Of History
4 December 2018
Loosely based on Clive Barker's novel The Forgiven, Candyman takes us somewhere we haven't been with horror for a long time. Not only do we have the gore, thrills and gothic atmosphere that sets the scene, but we are also dealing with socio-political issues and a dark period in American history. Set in Chicago, Helen is a graduate student doing a research paper on Urban Legends, when she comes across the local myth of the Candyman, who is summoned when you say his name five times in the mirror before being brutally killed. This legend looms largely on the Cabrini Green projects, a predominantly African American neighborhood battling a multitude of social issues. A white middle-class female is then confronted by the dark nature of impoverishment and gang crime ruling the area, but that will not stop her putting an end to the myth killing the locals. The candyman is the son of a slave, an artist who was the victim of a terrible injustice purely for being in love. Unlike other slasher films, this killer is not psychotic or wishes to get his sadistic kicks from murder, but he is an artist and sees death as a way to express himself from the other side. The multiple elements in this film make it more than just a horror and it can literally be appreciated by any movie fan

Cabin Fever (2002)

The Start Of Roth's Horror Climb
2 December 2018
When we look at the horror masterpieces Eli Roth has gone on to create, Cabin Fever falls quite short of his best. Whilst the storyline, acting, and SFX are good, it is the script that lets it down. The gaps in the dialogue make it hard to share a connection with the characters, which is a vital part of horror movies. So, the movie follows a group of college students who rent a cabin in the woods for a weekend of fun, sex, and alcohol. The weekend soon turns sour when a local hermit, who is carrying a strange but deadly disease, arrives begging for help and to warn them away. Of course, the students believe he is just crazy and quickly gets rid of him. Cabin Fever is Roth's directorial debut and taking that into account it would be pretty harsh to slate the film when overall it is not bad. Minus the gaps in the script, it is still very watchable and defiantly worth your time

Artsy Masterpiece

The Butterfly Effect is not only one of the ultimate edge of your seat thrillers, but it is also so mind-twistingly good that you could not even predict the outcome for the characters. Watching this when I was 11 I never appreciated how thought-provoking it was, until now at the age of 25. The Butterfly Effect goes on the chaos theory, "something as small as the flutter of butterfly wings, can ultimately cause a typhoon halfway around the world". Evan is a troubled boy who lives with his struggling single mother in a small town. The troubles have led to the boy blacking out and he is ordered to write in journals to remember events. Now a college student, Evan looks over his diaries to see what happened in his childhood before deciding he wants to free himself of all the memories. When Evan discovers he can go back in time, he tries to change certain aspects of his childhood friends (Kayleigh, Tommy, and Lenny) disturbing pasts so they lead on to have better lives. However, these minor changes will cause far bigger problems in the future.

Have Yourself A Very Merry Black Christmas
26 November 2018
In 1974, Bob Clarke's Black Xmas kick-started the teenage slasher sub-genre. The seasonal slasher went on to leave an impression on John Carpenter, who years later gave us Halloween. So, do I expect to be disappointed with a remake of such an iconic cult classic? It is hard to get excited over teenage slasher films these days, but Glen Morgan reinstalled that excitement. Billy Lenz has just been released from a mental institution and is looking to find his childhood home where he was abused by his mother. However, the house is now occupied by the sorority sisters. With the students unaware of the troubled history of the house and a deranged killer seeking revenge, it's a race against time for the college girls to survive. An aspect of this movie that makes it stand out is that it delves into Billy's backstory and it gives the film more depth. The sorority sisters each have something different to bring to the table, this makes it easier to get a bond with the characters. As the producers were responsible for films such as Final Destination, I was hoping for gory scenes and I received them. Overall, yes, it is predictable at times, but it is worth the watch and has a decent twist at the end.

Not To Be Missed
25 November 2018
"Serial killers don't stop", that's what a small town in the united states believed when a notorious serial killer, known as the cloverhitch killer, stopped killing for a decade. Ten young women brutally lost their lives and a stereotypical American family is about to have their lives changed forever. The bond between a father and son is sacred, but how would you react if your father was a possibly related to the Cloverhitch Killer that sent terror through young women a decade ago? Tyler is a son of a well-known family in the local community, they go to church frequently and Tyler is following in the footsteps of his father, Don, to become a troop leader. Upon stealing his father's truck to have a romantic date with a love interest, he stumbles across an incriminating kinky picture. Disturbed, he later checks his father's secret shed and finds even more incriminating evidence. After befriending Kassi, a local girl obsessed with the case, they team up to uncover the real truth behind the cloverhitch killer and put an end once and for all. If you are looking for an edge of the seat thriller or endless gore, this isn't the one for you. The plot is cleverly written, and the acting is strong, the film takes a while to build up but with all the twists and turns, it's worth the wait.

Caught In The Web Of A Brilliant Thriller
23 November 2018
It has been many years since the release of the American remake of The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, so I was excited about hearing there will finally be a sequel. I was intrigued by how the new cast and director will impact the film, especially as Fede Alvarez directed horror hits such as Evil Dead and Don't Breathe. I expected it to be dark and filled to the brim with thrills, which it was. Claire Foy gave a solid performance as the punk heroine Lisbeth Salander. For me, this was important as Rooney Mara played the socially awkward hacker outstandingly. The dark awkwardness that comes with her character, that icy stare, and her exceptional hacking ability were intact. We delve more into Salander's abusive childhood which makes you understand not just her attitude towards men, but also women. Whilst I was confused with why producers decided to jump to book four, the movie still worked really well. The criticism it gets is often unjustified and do not let it put you off seeing this movie.

Give It A Chance
22 November 2018
For someone that gave us some of the budget smashing Final Destination films, its disappointing that David R Ellis did not live up to the same expectations with Asylum. However, it is not a big budget film with well-known actors and for what the film offers, it does well. Yes, it is heavily influenced by Wes Craven's Nightmare On Elm Street, but the story is relatively good and the dark atmosphere gives it "that vibe". Madison has dealt with a lot of tragedy in her life, from losing her father at nine years old to her beloved brother Brandon just last year. Wanting to face her fears, she attends the same college that Brandon took his life at and shares a dorm with five other teenagers. Little do they know that the college was formerly "Burkes Asylum", a place where a mad doctor believed he could cure mentally disturbed youngsters. The students have reawakened the ghost and with no patients to treat, he sets his targets on these troubled teenagers.

Unfriended Meets Cam Girls
21 November 2018
Netflix has shown some riveting independent horrors, but when I heard Cam wasn't just a Netflix exclusive but also produced by Blumhouse, I was even more thrilled. This has to be near the top of Netflix's best films as it is not only an exceptional thriller but it also realistically highlights the possible dangers faced by those who work in the sex industry. We all know the sex industry is very competitive, even more so for webcam models which are the focus of this film. Lola lives a lavish lifestyle funded by her secret life as a webcam model, whilst her mother is unaware and still sees Alice as her shy daughter. Hovering around the fiftieth watched woman, Lola has an obsession to reach fifty, even including acts of fake suicide to boost viewers. This infatuation is just the start of Lola's meltdown into questioning her own sanity within the job as well as the paranoia that entrails. We meet the cliché stalkers and sleazy men, but the movie also highlights the lengths other women will go to knock another female down. After peaking, Lola is locked out of her account and notices a model pretending to be her, stealing her life essentially. With an unhelpful helpdesk and unable to tell her family, Lola is on her own mission to find out who has stolen her life. Constantly throughout the film, you will not just be gripped by the thrills, but also you will question every character Lola comes in contact with and believe they may have a part to play. Okay, so the ending isn't brilliant in a horror context, but it shows just how money crazed Lola is and what it can do. For those who will say "where have I seen Lola from?", Madeline Brewer starred as Tricia in the first series of Orange Is The New Black.

Dont Let THEM In
20 November 2018
"They wouldn't play with us" gives us the exact same chills "because you were home" did in The Strangers. With the rise of the delightfully gory New French Extremity movement in horror, Them is a refreshing break from the over the top gore. The film claims to be based on true events and at first, it is hard to establish where this film will go. You will be questioning whether it's a thriller, home invasion or possible slasher. The movie focuses on two main characters, there's school teacher Clementine and her partner Lucas, who have moved from France to an idyllic home in the Romanian capital. What was supposed to be a romantic night-in in their secluded home turns into a nightmare. When they witness their car being stolen, lights being turned off and the phone lines cut, they realize they are not as secluded as they believed. As the movie is only a little over an hour long, it comes as no surprise that there is little to the plot but is that the director's motive? Mindless violence by the hands of youths, could that be a statement that mindless violence portrayed by film, tv etc has an impact on some teenagers today?

Groundhog Day Meets Sorority Sisters
19 November 2018
When I saw a trailer for this film, I sighed "oh not another one". I was expecting a cliché sorority sister style slasher which is well past their sell-by date. However, I was totally wrong and pleasantly surprised. The film has been described as "Groundhog Day meets scream" and that is exactly what Blumhouse has given us. Tree Gelbum is a spoiled and beautiful sorority sister who wakes up in the dorm room of fellow student, Carter. Embarrassed, she goes about her day by avoiding her father's calls, having a secret affair with her lecturer, hanging out with the stuck up Kappa sisters and trying to ignore Carter. As nighttime hits, Tree is ready to leave for a party until shes brutally murdered by a masked attacker. Surprised, tree wakes up and relives the same day again starting in Carter's bed and now she has to find out who might be her killer. I am not sure whether this film is meant to have a humor aspect but it paid off, I say it is more a dark comedy than full-on horror but regardless its worth a watch and worth a hell of a lot more than the criticism it gets given.

Deserves NUN of the criticism
18 November 2018
After hearing that The Nun was the fifth instalment in The Conjuring Universe, I was excited to see how it would relate to either Annabelle or The Conjuring. This time around we are blessed with the "Demonic Nun" Valek, that haunted us in The Conjuring 2. The Nun is a spin-off from The Conjuring 2 but the ending of the film links heavily to the first film that kick-started this billion-dollar franchise. The film doesn't deserve the negative reviews it has been given, okay the jump scares are lame but putting those aside it fits in nicely with the franchise. Set predominantly in darkness, among graveyards, catacombs and churches give it the tense, deep dark suspense alive, especially with the lack of narrative. Set in 1952 Romania, an abbey is being haunted by a demonic presence, leading to a young nun taking her own life. Troubled Father Burke and a nun in her training, Sister Irene, are sent to Romania to investigate the situation and the pair team up with the merchant, "Frenchie", who found the body. The trio begins to notice the nuns are acting strangely within the abbey and soon realize that an evil spirit is trapped within wanting to take human form to escape. Father Burke, Sister Irene, and Frenchie put their lives and souls on the line to rid the abbey and save the nuns from the powerful dark forces. Yes, the film is missing the sprinkles of delight James Wan gives us, but overall it is a decent horror and shouldn't be missed, especially if you have seen the first four.

Annabelle Brought Back To Life
17 November 2018
In 2013, horror geeks and regular movie fans were left trembling with fear after The Conjuring was released. A sequel was released soon after and then followed by a disappointment spin-off that was Annabelle. So, what could David F Sandberg do to reinstall the fear this occult franchise gave us at the beginning? Well, he gave us back what we remembered, a solid story, questioning throughout and that grip your seat scares. The film begins in 1943, where we meet Samuel and Esther Mullings who are grieving the loss of their daughter Annabelle after a road traffic accident. Twelve years later, the couple opens their home to a nun and six children left homeless after their orphanage closed. The focus of the film is mainly around one of the children called Janice, crippled by polio she becomes obsessed by the locked room which stores the eerie porcelain Annabelle doll. Unknowingly, Janice has released vexed demon who is free to terrorize everyone in the house, but the demon has a fondness for Janice's soul. The best thing about The Conjuring franchise is that whilst each movie has its own story, they all interlink at the ending which has us going "omg I remember that". We got exactly that with Annabelle Creation, it was basically a prequel to Annabelle itself but the interlink at the ending I did not see coming and the way it all works out to bring it back to how the demonic doll got into the hands of Ed and Lorraine Warren is quite spectacular.

If The Haunting Of Hill House Did Horrors....
16 November 2018
Over the years, Netflix has given us a variety of award winning series including, Orange Is the New Black and The Crown. This time, Netflix has taken a dark turn by giving us a series that will send shivers down your spine every time you hear the phrase ?bent neck lady?. The show is based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name. Set between two time periods, in the summer of 1992 we see Hugh and Olivia Crain temporarily move into beautiful Hill House mansion with their 5 children Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke and Eleanor. The couple plan to renovate the mansion in order to make a profit so Olivia can design their own family home. What the family do not know is that this house is bound to the ground by dark paranormal activity, which strikes tragedy into the young family. Twenty six years later in the present day, we see the family try to live a normal life. However, they are all scared by the events over two decades ago and another paranormal tragedy is not too far away.

Will Leave You In A State Of High Tension
16 November 2018
After waking up from a sadistic dream, the Tomboyish Marie wakes up in the back of her best friend's car. Alex had invited her to stay at her families' reclusive farmhouse in the open French countryside to study and relax before exams take place. Unknown to them, a blood hungry killer is amongst the bushes waiting to get his perverted kicks once more. After witnessing the brutal murder of Alex's young family and the kidnap of her best friend, Marie enters a game of cat and mouse that leads you to one of the biggest twists of the New French Extremity genre. Like all new French extremity films that push the boundaries and break taboos of horror, High Tension was no different. The gore from start to finish was gut churning and may have been excessive at times, but the storyline and psychological feel to the movie made it bearable. As the film was low budget with up and coming actors I wasn't expecting it to be as riveting as it was. High Tension switched up the horror norms of the female lead being an innocent virginal female, as we have seen in Halloween and Friday The 13th. Whilst the film offered us nothing new to the world of horror, it has shown how far these transgressive films from French directors have come.

A Battle Well Done
16 November 2018
42 Students, Three Days, One Survivor, No Rules. Kinji FukasakuI')s hit underground classic makes The Hunger Games look like a children's tv show. An all-out battle of life or death is made to look so stylishly gory. Japan's current economy is on the brink of collapse, the youth are becoming unruly and Kitano, a quiet teacher is forced to quit after being assaulted at his school. A class of 9th-grade students are set out on an adventure for a field trip until they are gassed and taken to a deserted island. The frightened teenagers are then met with their old teacher, Kitano, whose life they made hell. Armed with just water, food, a map and a random weapon to survive this sadistic deathmatch until there is one winner. Failure to comply with the rules will result in the brutal death by an exploding neck collar. This movie deserves the cult status it has. The undertones of teenage drama and dark humour bring a pleasant delight to its sadistically gory theme.

Eighth Time Is Not A Charm
16 November 2018
The eighth installment of the franchise delves deep into the teenage life of one of films worst serial killers. When a young woman follows a little boy, she believes to be hurt, she is met by the sadistic Sawyer family and brutally murdered. The woman's father is a local Sherriff and vows to seek revenge by taking a young Jedidiah Sawyer to a mental institution. Ten years have passed, and the newly named Jackson has formed a close bond with one of the nurses. A riot soon starts in the wards leading many patients to escape, Jackson and the nurse being a couple. However, it is not just the law and authorities the couple are running from, it's the Sawyer family wanting their son back. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the greatest horror films of all time, but the constant recycling of the film is becoming tedious. Although the film keeps its bloodthirsty roots and shows us the killer in his teen years, it doesn't offer us anything new.

You Will Be Left Unfriended With This Sequel
16 November 2018
You've heard of the phrase don't touch what isn't yours? right? Well, Matias should have remembered that before stealing someone else's laptop that led him into the deep, dark web underworld. A 20 something Matias is crazily in love with his deaf girlfriend Amaya, even going to lengths to make an app to help them communicate better. Due to his laptop not being fit for purpose, he takes one belonging to someone called Norah C IV from the lost and found at a cyber cafe. Thrilled with his new piece of technology he skypes a bunch of his millennial friends: Dj Lexx, newly engaged couple Nari & Shannon, Youtube personality Aj and London based tech geek Damon. After threatening Facebook messages from a girl called Erica, Matias decides to take the laptop back to where he found it. However, he receives a message from someone called Charon68 asking for money for a video. Intrigued, Matias converses over a programme installed in the laptop called The River. Being watched by everyone else in the chat, Matias opens up the video files on the hard drive to discover they are videos of women being tortured. Utterly mortified by what they have seen, the group are unaware they are now involved in a sadistic underground game which includes acts of trephination (drilling a circle in comes skull) and violent death. Whilst Dark Web gives us a far-fetched sadistic picture, it, strangely enough, gives us a quiet cautionary message at the same time. Sequels to horror films are more or less often to be disappointments. Whilst this film is not brilliant it does not deserve the stick it gets. Its predecessor had a cruel, chilling and supernatural feel, but the found footage aspect and layout remained the same.

New French Extremity Strikes Again
16 November 2018
Typically, with a French horror film, we have a glimpse of new French extremity, home invasion, psychological and slasher all combined to give us the delightfully gory Inside. The film opens with a young pregnant woman called Sarah, who has lost her husband in a horrific car crash. It is now Christmas Eve, four months have passed, and the widow is awaiting the birth of her child, which miraculously survived the crash. When night falls, an unknown woman knocks on the door and asks to use Sarah's phone. Alone and frightened, Sarah calls the police who inspect the house and believe the woman has left. When they leave, Sarah locks all doors and windows, but little does she know that she has locked the psychotic female inside with her. The disturbed woman only wants one thing, the unborn child and will brutally murder anyone who gets in her way. The French horror scene has given us a purge of splatterfest films over the past decade and Inside does not fault. A blood-soaked psychopath using scissors to retrieve the unborn baby she so desperately wants will be implanted when you think of this film.

Battle Royal Hits Colombia
16 November 2018
Your first day at work is always supposed to be strenuous but having to murder your colleagues in a battle royal style game, was more than Dany Wilkins bargained for. Set in a secluded cooperate office in Bogota, Colombia, 80 Americans are about to start their day, unaware that they are about to play a sadistic game that can only have one winner. The company has placed tracking devices in each employees skull due to the high risk of kidnapping fears. Whilst colleagues are trying to avoid being killed by some of their psychotic workmates, they are trying to avoid the ticking time bombs in their heads that can explode any minutes. There is something quite delightfully barbaric about switching from a peaceful Mamas & Papas song to the execution-style murders of innocent people. Belko is basically Battle Royal but instead of Japanese teenagers on an island with exploding neck devices attached, it is American officer colleagues with bomb chips in their skulls. However, unlike Battle royal, it lacks the pointless amount of gore and other elements that made it a cult classic. The Belko Experiment is worthy of a sit through but can become easily forgettable.

Don't Hold Your Breath
16 November 2018
Over the past few decades, we have been blessed with a selection gripping, psychological and some damn right nauseating films from the horror sub-genre, home invasion. Don't Breathe is another film added to the long list, but sadly doesn't give us the same thrill as many others. However, Don't Breathe shouldn't be disregarded and at best is a good suspense thriller with a dark secret to be revealed towards the end. Three reckless teenagers make their living by robbing peopl's homes and when they realize a blind veteran has moved into a house on an abandoned street, they seize their opportunity. After realizing he has hundreds of thousands of dollars. Although the man is blind and grieving the loss of his daughter, he is by no means an easy target. With a house so bolted up, when the feral trio find an entrance, they sure as hell will struggle to find an exit. A few scares here and there, a little bit of gore and some suspense make it watchable, but it is not something I would rant home about. Films such as The Strangers and Funny Games set such a high standard for home invasion it is hard to top such quality.
