Outer Banks (2020)
Vapid & completely pointless
I'm ASTONISHED at how many people consider this even semi-decent watching - it is incredibly, incredibly low quality. Must have been a hit during COVID when people were sat at home, lonely, and just wanted to watch beautiful people do stupid & mindless activities.
The main characters are unlikeable, irritating, stupid and way too old to be playing teenagers, and the plot could have been written by someone with an IQ of -4. It is basically a bunch of model 'teenagers' driving a boat around being arseholes.
Would not recommend - go and watch almost ANYTHING else. Or read a book. Or stare at a wall watching paint dry. You'll thank me later.
The Gray Man (2022)
Abomination - nothing like the book(s)!
The Gray Man books are phenomenal, whereas this film is an absolute disgrace.
Ryan Reynolds does his best but the overall script, storyline, bad guy (Chris Evans) and supporting cast are abysmal.
Genuinely shocked at how badly they got this wrong. Take a storyline from one of the books, and go and execute it. This is a horrid mish-mash done badly. Very poor.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Incredibly Poor - what was Ewan McGregor thinking?!
It's hard to fathom why Ewan McGregor agreed to this project given how utterly appalling the script/plot is. It's like the 10 year old girl playing Leia (who is the only redeeming feature) created the whole thing herself in her lunch breaks at school.
That being said, McGregor's acting is also shockingly bad (why does he speak at half speed and in a more haltingly 'english' accent than he did previously?!), as is everyone else's. I spent most of the first 3 episodes wishing he would die...
Overall massively disappointing.
If you are expecting Bob's Fett/Mandalorian quality, you will be sorely mistaken.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Fantastically American
This is 10/10 Tom Cruise, America, fighter planes & old fashioned romance. Just what 2022 needed - would highly recommend!
Simple but effective storyline, solid acting all round, GREAT music (some 80s bangers + some newer stuff), realistic flying/action scenese - it really does tick all of the boxes of a great film!
Moonfall (2022)
Utterly ridiculous & utterly fantastic
Look, this film is awful but in a 'wow this is hilarious' kind of way.
Completely implausible but utterly fantastic - you'll be laughing your ass of throughout.
Highly recommend!
Tenet (2020)
Read a book instead
The film has some really enjoyable characters, the music is great and there are some fantastic action scenes (some bad ones too).
But the big downside is that the overall the plot is overwhelmingly stupid. Impossible to follow, unrealistic, and with poor dialogue. My advice would be to save 2.5 hours of your life and read a book instead :)
Ghahreman (2021)
Worth a watch!
Unusual storyline, great characters, well shot and some fantastic humour. Sadly the ending (or lack thereof in terms of information) was a little disappointing, which is why this film wasn't rated higher!
The Tourist (2022)
Excellent start, then gets progressively worse....
The first 2 episodes are excellent. 3 & 4 are average and then after episode 5 you wonder why you ever started the series in the first place. A real shame because it starts very well!
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Largely pointless
Expresses some deep emotions about parenthood but the storyline goes nowhere and is largely pointless.
Watch almost anything else for more enjoyment.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Surprisingly awful
The original Matrix is an absolute classic (9/10). The two sequels were good (6 or 7/10) but with pretty confusing storylines in parts.
This film is truly dreadful. Surprisingly awful in fact.
The trailor takes tiny snapshots of the film and make it look like a fantastic blockbuster, but in reality it is a nostalgia-heavy, poorly thought out and terribly acted 'remake' of sorts of the first film.
The storyline and the number of pointless easter eggs/repeats of the first film make this a largely pointless addition to the original trilogy.
Save your money or go and see Spiderman instead 🤣
Single All the Way (2021)
Make mince pies instead
Awful acting (you will wish you had gone blind and deaf), terrible storyline and a slapstick comedy approach that only a mother could love.
Save yourself considerable heartache and just go and make mince pies instead :)
No Time to Die (2021)
An interesting mix of good and bad!
Many of the reviews of this film (with people suggesting Bond has lost its soul etc) feel wildly off the mark
This installment is EPIC in parts - the scale and drama of some of the scenes is pretty incredible.
However, the overall script and dialogue is a bit confusing. Remi Malek's bad guy doesn't really make sense, and it gets a bit lost.
Not quite the swashbuckling Bond of old but a solid sign off for Daniel Craig. I'd still out Casino Royale and Skyfall ahead of this film but it is worth a watch!
However.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Good but not great
Likeable main characters and with some fantastic action scenes, this is an overall solid film! The plot/dialogue (like many marvel films) is a little thin, and is poor in some places, which lets the film down slightly in some areas. Overall a decent watch!
Nomadland (2020)
Good but not great
Frances McDormand is always highly enjoyable but this film falls short of some of her best work (such as 3 Billboards).
The cinematography and music are wonderful, but the story falls a little short.
It feels like the film wants to be a thought-provoking, wanderlust inducing epic, but it is too shallow and too slow for it to be classed as such.
Good, but not great.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Terrible story, dialogue & effects
A shocking sequel with absolutely none of the heart/magic of the first film. Diabolical story, poor dialogue and substandard effects. It's hard to blame what is a great cast, because they have all been fabulous in other films. Take this 2.5 hours of your life and do something worthwhile with it - read a book, take a bath, take the dog for a walk - literally anything but watching this abysmal film.
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020)
A must-see for everyone, everywhere
Great to see some clear direction on what we as a species need to do to survive and thrive - let's hope that governments and (future) world leaders take note!
Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984)
Incredible score and a strong storyline
The music in this film is truly magical. On top of that there is a strong storyline, some fantastic characters and plenty of love & adventure.
Extraction (2020)
Action thriller with little else
This is a good (not great) shoot em up with Chris Hemsworth. Enjoyable in parts, it is let down by a poorly executed storyline, mixed dialogue and an average ending. Bourne it is not...
1917 (2019)
Fantastic cinematic experience
Strong story, wonderful cinematic experience where it is one continuous shot, great dialogue (which is kept to a minimum), brilliant music. Loved it!
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Poor imitation of the originals
The classics were great because of the strong storylines, relatable characters and the hard fought battle between good and evil....
Unfortunately this movie (similar to the one beforehand) has very little substance, instead relying on cameos from old characters to prop up non-existent storylines. Poor action sequences and hard to build a connection with any of the characters, this is a sad imitation of the once great Star Wars franchise. Time for a rethink and a fresh direction!!
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Like a terrible episode of Black Mirror
Poor storyline, bad character development, attempts at humour will make you sad, incredibly pong given the lack of story and/or characters with no depth.
It's an attempt at a film-like episode of Black Mirror but without any of the skill and intelligence of Charlie Brooker. If you enjoy good films, don't go and see this.
My dad fell asleep in the first 25 minutes and I was jealous. Sums it up nicely.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Fantastic acting, stunning soundtrack & a level of depth rare in modern cinema!
This film is a masterpiece. So few modern films have any real depth - instead they rely on heavy-duty special effects, flimsy characters and lightweight story-lines. This film is the complete opposite.
Lady Gaga is brilliant (her character grows and grows and grows) and this is Bradley Cooper's best performance to date.
The music, lyrics, screenplay & tempo of this film are all exquisite.
Stop reading reviews and just go and see it on the big screen - you will not be disappointed!
