Knuckles: The Flames of Disaster (2024)
Boosh meets Wade and Knuckles
Loved this episode - Julian Barrett was awesome channelling his Mighty Boosh-ness to create a surreal episode. It had elements of This is Spinal Tap added with bizarre rock tunes and dancing Owls!
Yes Knuckles isn't there much but it didn't matter this was great fun. My 12 yr old just laughed the whole way through and that's where this serious is aimed at.
The mix of classic slapstick, surreal moments and reflective story worked well with a brilliant ending - and include the voice of Michael Bolton!
This series has been fun and filled a gap while we wait for Sonic 3 at the end of the year.
Any chance of a series 2 - this does finish well but I want to see more of Wade and Knuckles.
The Sandman (2020)
Simply perfect
I came to The Sandman later than most and fell under its spell straight away. The imagination of Neil Gaiman to bring this modern day epic into reality was simply terrifying, intriguing and beautiful all at the same time.
I moved with some trepidation to the podcast , a feeling which was short lived. This is stunning absolutely perfect from casting to delivery with Neil G watching over it all as narrator.
I now have this on audible and listen regularly and hear new things each time.
Pure genius packaged in bitesize chunks which act as a mini theatrical performance with a cast of high quality. If you have seen the series but not heard this you are missing out on the nuances of the storylines - thank you to all who put time into this and thank you Neil for bringing us into the world of Dream.
Elemental (2023)
This is not a bad movie
Watched this with a group of children from my school on a Christmas treat. The whole cohort sat transfixed and from that point onwards this has become a major discussion point in our classroom. It's beautifully filmed, lovingly delivered and develops the story well as you move along. Yes we have seen this before - but as there are only five or six actual stories in the world that's a 'meh' argument. This isn't a 'flop' from Pixar it's a reimagining which was beautifully done. Ignore the haters - this is a film to be experienced and enjoyed and will allow each person to take away from it what they need from their perspective... well done Pixar.
Four Kids and It (2020)
What was the point?
No idea why this was made except that it doesn't fit into modern 'life'. As children wouldn't be able to relate to the story let's update it and change the context and family dynamic.
Really poor not only writing but acting from some of the cast. Sometimes you should just leave a story alone and not change it for the sake of change.
Having read and watched the original with my son he watched this and after half an hour said 'this is rubbish can we watch the original' pretty much out of the mouths of babes!
Next time don't pull in a one dimensional author to create a remake...we all knew what it would be like when we saw who was writing it.
Inside Man (2022)
Brilliant and mental
Thank You Moffat for creating something so marmite and bonkers that the haters will hate and lovers will love. It's brilliant, crazy and poignant all at the same time. From reading others reviews this will split opinion - but hey at least his Dr Who was good not like Chibnall's rubbish!!!
Tennant is spiralling into despair while Wells controls the situation manipulating the collapsing world of Tennant and his family. Add to that the brilliant, quietly spoken genius of Tucci and his sidekick Estimond and you have a perfect storm developing.
All that needs to happen is Moffatt deliver an A1 ending and this is a classic. Love it 😊
Doctor Who: Legend of the Sea Devils (2022)
Same old same old from Chibnall
Hoped for something better but we just got all we had before. A good Dr and decent cast struggling with poor writing from someone who doesn't understand the genre he's writing for. Best thing about this episode - one more left and RTD is back! That's something to get excited about.
Morbius (2022)
Hmmmm....
My big bug bear with this is the speed we go from open titles to fully blown Morbius. It was like the back story was an annoyance which needed to be jumped over. Also, not sure about the end credit sequences - felt like an after thought. Shame really has potential. Let's hope they get a second chance.
The Ipcress File (2022)
Tom Hollander does what he does best...
Really enjoyed this first episode. Angled shots, great soundtrack and great characters - Cole and Hollander are brilliant. The groundwork for this feels like it was influenced by the remake of 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' - but that isn't a bad thing.
Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Frozen II (2019)
Quite simply better...
So Frozen was good but really hung on two songs - the story was a barely recognisable version of the Snow Queen and it just about lifted itself - but classic it isn't.
Then this came out. My son wanted to see it so we said OK and I didn't hold out much hope. I was pleasantly surprised. The songs are all great and it feels like a musical - not a film with songs.
The story works and the development of the characters is really good. This leaves the first one standing and is a rare thing in films...a better sequel.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter Four - Village of the Angels (2021)
Finally Chibnall did it...took long enough 🙄
Everything Chibnall has touched on Dr Who has turned to lead until this episode. Finally he gets it - right at the end of his tenure and finally gives the Dr a chance to be the Dr - just before Jodie leaves. If more episodes had been like this his tenure would have been more fondly received.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
All memories of the last remake are washed away...the Ghostbusters are back
Ok so anyone who liked the last film really never experienced the first one. I was there in 1984 - a year of amazing films and I have no idea how many times I saw the original maybe 20-30 times. Why am I saying this? Because this film gave me those feelings again. I loved it. The new cast were great and spot on and stick with it because it's worth it. Anyone knocking this and I've even seen people saying the last film was better....really - that's just stupid - came in expecting the first film and it was never going to be. Jason Reitman has directed this with one eye on his experiences growing up on set and the other on establishing a new journey. Brilliant job - well executed. A worthy addition to the first two (now we can bin the third one).
Annika (2021)
Loved it
Great to see Nicola Walker back - loved her in Forgotten and Spooks and even back in Chalk. Like the way it's laid out with the talk to camera and her deadpan delivery. Added to planner 😊
Dennis the Menace (1993)
Change the name of the film
OK so in the US a blond haired cute looking boy who is actually the anti-Christ maybe Dennis...but not in the UK. The problem with this film starts with the name - Dennis is dark haired, causes mayhem for all and has a dog called Gnasher. This isn't Dennis in my books and I couldn't shake that throughout the film. Another attempt at the US film market taking a name and ruining the history and context.
Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks (2021)
It was alright...still not up to the standard of previous Drs
This was better but it's still not up to the standard of previous Dr's series. I am still amazed how Chibnall can write awesome Torchwood and Dr Who episodes as well as Broadchurch (well the first series) and yet can't do anything to build on what's gone before. He isn't reinventing he's deconstructing.
Jodie does the best she can with an OK script - ther can't be a complaint against her she works her socks off with what she has - and the bring Jack back was a good move...it's just flat and OK.
Doctor Who: Rosa (2018)
She settling in but the writing isn't
I want to start by saying I have no issue at all with a female Dr Who and I think Jodie Whittaker will do a great job...however the scripts so far have let her down. This was better and the edgy element of the racism in Montgomery and across the southern states of the USA was well constructed...great casting as Rosa Parks and the nugget of meeting Martin Luther King...BUT...who decided on that awful ending?
It was so clunky and wooden with them all standing around that it took away from the whole episode - along with playing the song over the titles.
There is no need for a complete revamp of Dr Who but the new team seem to want to throw the baby, the bath water...in fact the whole bathroom out the window. Concentrate on improving the writing and developing the Drs character and not stamping your mark on something that wasn't broken.
