Come to Daddy (2019)
Good watch! Aotearoa NZ going hard!
Found this while scrolling on prime. Elijah Wood is usually consistently good so gave it a crack. Nice to see it was actually a NZ film as the beginning credits came up.
It had a nice twist in it that I wasn't expecting. The black comedy wasn't expected either. Characters had enough depth for the story to make sense. I felt quite a few emotions while watching, fear, sadness, shocked, humour - so an all round good movie.
Give it a go and don't have high expectations and I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Considering nearly every plot under the sun has been used, I thoroughly enjoyed this storyline.
Superstore (2015)
Lucky dip find!
This came up on my Netflix suggestions and I had never heard of it before.
I'm so glad I gave it a shot, every episode is consistently as good as the one before. Characters ate hilarious and unique. The support characters play small roles but you never forget them.
One flaw, Amy is always the annoying one. Gets a bit old. Other than that, perfect show!
The Sinner (2017)
Short 2 stars for the 2 bad seasons
NOTE: Writing this review after watching Season 3.
1st Season was pretty much perfection. To the point I watched it twice. Biel (Beil?) convinced me that she is an A+ actress! The storyline was so crazy but very believable. The dark parts of it still haunt me (in a good way that a TV show should) to this day.
2nd Season I have forgotten about. Must not have been that good. I just remember a forever frowning boy.
3rd Season I just finished tonight. Although I binged it in 2 days, I will most probably forget about it like I did with Season 2. Character just took the micky out of everyone - seriously, why didn't Sonya call the cops when he showed up at her house? After she knew he killed someone? Or why didn't his wife call the cops when he confessed to killing someone? Or when he showed up at Ambrose' House and had a small fight in front of the grandson? It actually got a bit annoying to be honest.
I wouldn't recommend 2 & 3 to be honest. Maybe this show could have been a one time thing with season 1?
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Sticks with you
Double Trouble and Husavick are my top played songs on Spotify. This was a perfect balance of light heartedness, humour and emotional that I feel has been lacking lately. The music is actually pretty good too.
I really enjoyed Will & Rachel together. Good friendship and chemistry. Being honest, I've watched it 3 times already.
Rough Night (2017)
Don't let the good actress fool ya!
Yes Scarlett is in it but I bet she regrets doing this movie.
Bad script. Over the top acting. So far fetched it's just a joke.
Where are the diamonds too?!
Spinning Out (2020)
So good I watched it twice
It was refreshing to watch something that touched on mental health the way it did in this show. The ice skating was pretty cool to watch, triangle love story, bratty little sister, loyal best friend and unstable Mum, but the mental health factor was always underlying throughout.
This is the reality of living with mental health issues.
I was super sad to see that it was cancelled after only one season. Especially when I watched it twice within 6 months. I don't normally do that with shows.
I got to love the characters for different reasons.
Awesome watch.
Love (2016)
Kept me binging...
I liked this show because the characters were more real than a lot of shows at the moment. There were a few funny and cringe type moments that kept me watching.
I reduced the star rating because of a few things missing. For the 3rd season to be the last, I think viewers deserved more closure.
The fact that Gus was poorly treated by film crew the entire time, maybe this is a good reflection of the industry but come on - nobody pulled them up on how horrible they were?
Then the Dustin thing was never acknowledged. Gus deserved to know. It wasn't really a good ending without that being addressed in the last few episodes.
No sight of Mickey's Mum or singling/s mention in earlier seasons? Just a hopeless Dad yet we meet Gus' entire family?
Good touch on reality of relationship dynamics but there was a lot missing.
Dolittle (2020)
It wasn't BAD bad!
I don't understand the poor rating for this movie. I'm glad I didn't search the rating before watching it.
The colours in this movie is beautiful. The storyline is definitely far fetched but so is the idea of a human speaking to animals so what do you expect?
The one liner jokes had my husband and I laughing whereas usually I'm laughing by myself so that says something too.
Good movie to watch with young kids 5-10 ish.
Those are the people who should be adding the reviews!
Ozark (2017)
Barely any boring bits
The Byrdes are always a step ahead even when you think they're screwed.
I just finished all 3 seasons and I am already hanging out for season 4.
Bateman is someone you can't help but love for how well he plays his character with how much he loves his family.
I highly recommend this if you're into binge watching or have time to kill in ISO!
Gemini Man (2019)
Make your own opinion!
Had I read the reviews I may have not even bothered and maybe it's because I'm a fan of Will Smith? But I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, so did my husband and teen son so there are a few different audiences who collectively enjoyed it.
I made it an 8 for the slack CGI in the last scene and also the poor dialogue in some parts but other than that I actually loved it.
Fractured (2019)
Lesson: Don't rely on reviews
I watched this before I read the reviews and I'm thankful otherwise I may have added it to my Netflix list then forgotten about it.
It was an amazing movie. Keeps you guessing throughout. Definitely watch.
Tell Me Who I Am (2019)
Did not expect that...
I started watching with no expectations.
The story couldn't be more twisted in the sense of the components involved - twins, accident, memory loss, years of silence, years of searching, years of hiding.
There were so many elements to this documentary it wasn't a simple story BUT it was so well made that it flowed well.
My heart goes out to the twins. What an amazing story of selfless love. I commend Marcus and hurt for his hurt. It is heartwarming to see them come together in such a dark situation that lasted most their lives.
Aladdin (2019)
9 because it's not the original
After being hugely disappointed watching the Lion King I did not have high hopes for this one BUT as the credits rolled I told my son and husband that the creators of the Lion King should get some tips on how to do a remake.
Nothing compares to the original, I'll agree on that. The thing with this one was it stayed true to the main parts of the original but had some added flavour in there to reflect the actors and who worked on the film. The contrast of colours were amazing, Will Smith had a lot to stand up to but I believe he did Robin William's role justice and I reckon Robin wouldn't be mad that Will made the role his own.
I was mad watching the trailer that Jafar didn't sound as evil and dark but the actor definitely pulled me in to just how dark he was by the end of the movie.
It was good to have more focus on the main characters and less on Raja, Apu and Carpet, although they had some special moments too.
Overall I was pretty impressed on the movie. Some should really chill out a bit that yeah we get it, nothing compares to the original!?! We can't overlook the fact a lot went into this movie and it held my attention throughout even though I knew how it was going to end.
The Lion King (2019)
Amazing graphics! Lack in emotion
I guess with the realism of animals they couldn't include extreme emotions in their faces which was a shame as it was hard to fall in love with them because of this.
I packed tissues thinking the real looking Mufasa meeting his death would cause nonstop tears but no, not a drop!
Was disappointed Scars song was almost nonexistent. The hyenas lacked the silly comedy the originals had.
Beyonce might want to stick to singing.... her own tracks. Like another viewer said, she over sung where it wasn't needed.
Mother! (2017)
Torn on my opinion
I sat down expecting a thriller/horror from the short plot I read when I googled it. I wish I read more as I sat in anticipation, then confusion until 3/4 of the movie. That's when I got the husband to read the full synopsis to me.
I had to fast forward through the baby being eaten for obvious reasons. Maybe I needed more caffeine today but I was a bit slow to pick up the God-Mother earth- Adam and Eve storyline so yes, I was very disappointed it wasn't about a couple who was visited by another random couple who then twisted s**t up to make it an epic film.
My bad.
Lesson learned that I should read a more detailed plot before choosing a movie.
So I am very torn how I feel about it as had I known the REAL characters, I may have enjoyed it more.
Still feeling very angry for Mother and randoms in her house. That is totally divorce material had it been a real situation.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Captivating the whole way through
Heard this was good but wasn't expecting much. Within the first few minutes I knew it was going to be a good one. The graphics alone were amazing! The colours kept my 2 year olds attention the entire movie and my 12 year old didn't once speak throughout the film (that's a first).
This by far tops all Spiderman movies I have watched.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Binge worthy!
This is my first ever review on here which says a lot! The trailer automatically played on Netflix and as I had just finished my last show I thought I'd give it a go. I'm usually too scared to watch horrors but as it was daylight and I can get through AHS during sun hours, I started it.
It was so good that I found myself even watching it in the dark the same night.
Enough scares to class it as a horror and I never thought I'd ever say that a horror could make me cry? But this one did. Similar story to season 1 of AHS but the depth it goes into with the characters are 100% better!
Well done Netflix! Hope more like this are on their way.
Oh and I have to add that this is a show you'll get closure from! You won't be left wondering at the end, well at least I didn't.
