Foundation (2021)
Game of Thrones in a sci-fi setting
The sci-fi themes and production quality are great. The overarching story is intriguing.
But this show just feels like Game of Thrones with a different setting and characters. The same old ultra evil, powerful villains with disturbing displays of their bad deeds, along with constant tension and drama.
We already watched many hours of this in Game of Thrones, so I would have liked to see something more original and entertaining, without the same flaws.
But if you love Game of Thrones then this could be worth watching!
A Week Away (2021)
Christian teen musical
The movie blurb doesn't say it, but this is actually a Christian teen musical movie.
You might like it if you're a Christian, but if you're not then it can be quite cringey and awkward.
Blade Runner (1982)
Worth a watch
I didn't grow up with this movie but thought I'd better give it a go seeing how well it's rated.
It was a decent movie overall, but nothing special. The pacing is a bit slower than more recent movies but was still interesting the whole way through.
The dystopian feel of the movie was a bit corny and unconvincing at times but still worked.
The ending scenes of the movie got a bit silly in my opinion, and changed the movie from having a mystery feel to feeling more like a thriller or horror, which I thought spoiled the experience and the story.
Nevertheless, I would still watch it again, especially before watching Blade Runner 2049. Just don't set your expectations too high.
Kaze tachinu (2013)
Good but sad
Worth a watch. Beautiful artistic style. I felt like it got progressively sadder until it ended, kind of like Grave of the Fireflies.
Only real complaint is the sound effects sounded like they were performed by a person, which was distracting since a lot of them weren't convincing.
Lost in Space (2018)
Misses the mark
Was interesting at first because of the sci-fi adventure theming, but sometimes didn't make sense and the drama was over the top. Had potential but not worth it.
The Incredibles (2004)
Good family movie
I was worried that this would be an annoying kids' movie. But we actually enjoyed it. We found it a good light hearted movie for any age.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Pretty average
I haven't seen many Marvel movies so thought this would be a good starting point.
The movie was only just interesting enough to watch, and I found myself yawning through a lot of it.
Was a pretty average cheesy action movie. Barely any plot. Unoriginal story.
The Space Between Us (2017)
Boring
Interesting idea. First part of the movie was kind of interesting. Got pretty boring half way through and then kept dragging on. Feels like a teen movie, so maybe I'm just watching the wrong movie.
Step Brothers (2008)
Just ok
Funny idea, had a fair few funny bits but also pretty cringey and annoying
Office Space (1999)
Disappointing
I went into this expecting a light hearted comedy about office work, but found it was quite cynical, dull and depressing. Not my type of comedy I guess.
Comme un chef (2012)
Nice movie
Light hearted, positive and funny movie. Recommended!
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Good movie, too many battles
+ Interesting plot + Engaging + Pretty
- Drags on for too long, especially in the extended edition
- Too many drawn out battles
Patriots Day (2016)
Worth seeing
Decent movie. Provided a few different perspectives on the event.
Was a bit annoying with the constant background music though. Sometimes felt out of place.
Worth watching.
Runaway Bride (1999)
Nice movie with a good theme
Decent movie, worth a watch. Some of it felt cliche but it still has some funny bits and a positive message.
Four Lions (2010)
Not my type of humour
I gave this movie a go since it is well rated and had some funny ideas. I tried to get into it but barely had a couple of laughs. By the time we got half an hour through I turned it off since it just wasn't working.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Very disappointing
When I had the opportunity to watch this movie, I jumped at the opportunity since it has an exceptional reputation. But I found the movie thoroughly disappointing and I regret even watching it.
One of the first things that stood out is the movie is extremely long and drawn out. Many scenes drag on showing boring unimportant details for ridiculous amounts of time.
I was relieved when the long and boring introduction finished and the dialogue began. Unfortunately, the dialogue was short-lived and few and far between for the rest of the movie.
I spent most of the movie straining to find an interesting, logical plot, but the plot was minimal and not engaging. Some aspects were also vague and disjointed. What little plot that was shown was drowned out in the boring filler content that comprised most of the movie.
A number of the scenes depicting space-related concepts are interesting from a scientific point of view, in the same way that watching photos and videos released by NASA might be. But this isn't what I was looking for coming into the movie; I wanted something engaging and entertaining.
Lastly, the ending of the movie was terrible. It was drawn out and over-the-top while also being extremely vague and confusing. Completely unsatisfying.
I spent the entire movie waiting for it to "start" and get interesting, but it never did. Not recommended.
In hindsight, I suspect the movie is popular because it was relevant and novel when it was released 50 years ago while also making a realistic depiction of some aspects of space.
