Zero (2018)
No connections.
On winter break, I flew to Cincinnati, Ohio to visit my family and relatives. I went to movies and saw Zero. Directed by Anand L. Rai and starred by the very popular superstars of Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. The Film portrays a short man named Bauua Singh who experiences love with two very different women. One is disable and smart, and the other one is a party girl. The movie was very disappointing in my opinion. Maybe the story was just not right. When you see who the lead male actor is, you expect something greater than just plain storyline that is emotional and not free-lived and entertained throughout. Maybe this film came out at the wrong time. A big superstar leads a movie, set to release in Christmas time. I tried to focus on the storyline, but something just did not connect. Maybe it was the cliché of every emotional love story film throughout that made the audience lose their focus easily. Surprisingly, there were only about 5 people in the theater including me. It had modern elements such as bright lighting and smooth music that relates to the plot, but some factors were still missing. I'd give this film a 4/10 because it just did not connect with me at all on a personal level.
Bãhubali 2: The Conclusion (2017)
GOLD
A film that has inspired me a lot.
Bahubali.
This modern fantasy directed by Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli or S.S. Rajamouli, is nothing but pure Gold. It is an epic with two parts, The Beginning and The Conclusion. Secrets in the kingdom of Mahishmati are discovered by Shivudu. He learns that his father Amrendra Bahubali was murdered by his uncle, Kattappa. But there are more secrets and truths to be told.
The movie overall was very entertaining, and it taught me about culture and tradition of the old times in Hindustan. When I watched the first part it made me eager to watch the second one as well. The first part ends in a climax that has the whole world buzzing for the answer. "Why did Kattappa kill Bahubali?" When the second part did came, I watched it and I was amazed and very entertained. The story that is told about Amrendra Bahubali is just fascinating. But it also all ties in strongly. All the characters have a significance in forwarding the movie. S.S. Rajamouli does a great job of working with a big cast and organizing them to direct this brilliant movie.
All the characters have fantastic method acting of their roles. In this film, everything is justified because every scene is important and has a purpose. This film is right up there as one of, if not, the best Indian ever. It competes shoulders to shoulders with Hollywood films. This creative epic is nothing more than a masterpiece.
Endgame (2011)
VERY INTERESTING!!!
October Review
On my spare time over the summer, I came upon a show that caught my eye. Endgame, a Canadian drama that focuses on a chess grandmaster Arkady Balagan. As soon as I saw the poster for it, I was excited because I was fascinated with chess at the time. I loved watching it and analyze it move by move. The series is about a former world chess champion who has witnessed the murder of his fiancée and develops a debilitating case of agoraphobia. Fear of places that cause panic, hopelessness or embarrassment. Because of this Balagan is forced to stay in the hotel and not leave. He is also running out of money and need to find a way to stay at the hotel no matter what. Balagan becomes a detective using his analytical skills. He has his 'pawns', friends as well. A chess fanatic Sam, hotel bartender, Danni, housekeeper Alcina, and his fiancée's sister, Pippa. The hotel security manager, Hugo, tries to stop Balagan every chance he gets.
The usual plot is that some sort of conflict occurs that needs a brilliant brain to analyze the situation which is Balagan, the ultimate detective. He employs his main strengths which are remembering things and creating a scene with the things and information that he has already analyzed. He must then lead forward onto another topic. Sam does his spying outside the Huxley hotel and collects information to report back to Balagan. It's really cool to get an insight into a chess player's head and how they think. All the memorizing and analyzing he does is unbelievable, thus incredible. This actually portrays a life of an intelligent man who is ill with a fear of leaving the Huxley because his fiancé was assassinated by someone. The moral for me I think that, When life throws you under the big bus and crushes you, be resilient but also find answers and build on everything as you go along; do what your good and then charge for it while still earning a profession and a title.
3 Idiots (2009)
Awesome movie
In Rajkumar Hirani's inspirational comedy film, 3 Idiots, Rancho (Aamir Khan), is a college student who does not hesitate at all to achieve success. He assists his two friends, Farhan and Raju, by feeding inspirational advice to alter their way of thinking. The film begins when the two friends get together because Chatur "Silencer" Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya) calls Farhan and claims that he has found out where Rancho is. All three of them get together and travel to Shimla to find Rancho, who has disappeared since graduation. While on the car to Shimla, a flashback story is painted which shows Farhan and Raju starting their college year in the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) in Delhi. Rancho has a conviction that hands on learning is the best and goes to class to learn, rather than achieve good grades. Farhan and Raju have their own personal dilemmas which is why they end up at ICE. The institution's director, Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani) is also a professor known as "Virus" in the ICE community. Virus's traditional philosophies on education contrast heavenly to Rancho's carefree and easygoing love for learning. Rancho and Virus's daughter, Pia (Kareena Kapoor), fall for each other but things start to fall apart when the influence of friends is embraced which leads to bad choices
When I watched this film It was in 2014, it was a cold windy Saturday morning. My first impression was, "here we go again, another boring film!" Because after reading the title, my brain instantly thought this movie was a flop. But I kept watching because it starred the talented, Aamir khan, who is one of the best actors of Bollywood. The film was hysterically funny and inspirational. The song, Give me some sunshine, is very powerful as it relates to most college students' life. The lyrics, "give me some sunshine, give me some rain...Give me another chance I wanna grow up once again...", gives me flashbacks about my childhood and want to relive those moments again where the sun was shining bright; where the clouds would spit out heavy rain which would swell the plants and create loud intimidating drops that simply calms your soul. We are all tired and need a little rain and a little sunshine in our foreheads sometimes. The climax of the film is when Rancho and his friends are caught asleep behind the back seats of the class by Virus. They were all drunk, but Rancho and Raju were awake from it and up sitting down with their blurry faces. Virus walks in and calls, Raju's name and he awkwardly replies, "present sir!" The bottle rolls on the floor and goes down to the front row where Silencer picks it up confidently and takes a sniff. Raju is called to Virus's office and is forced into an extreme scenario: He is forced to choose between Rancho or himself to be rusticated from ICE. Raju is stuck between sacrificing his poor family or his best friend. At the end, he jumps from the window and is immediately rushed to the hospital. I think this scene sums up what college experience really is: it is about the decisions you make as you mature. It is really a heart touching scene for the audience. It creates the pathos appeal as the it kicks in with the lyrics, "We won't let go of you. We won't let you go!" It is hard to translate it to English but the second sentence is inversed from the first sentence; this is done to paint an even picture in the audiences' minds because the meaning is same, but it is said in a different order.
Truely, an absolute powerful movie that teaches a significant life moral: do what you love to do, and your career will be that.
