The Sympathizer (2024)
A Vietnamese story written by an American for American audiences!
As someone born and raised in Vietnam, I noticed numerous issues with this show. For instance, they need to correct their vocabulary throughout. When referring to January 1975, they say 'Winter 1975,' but it should be 'Spring 1975' because in Vietnam, January is considered spring, not winter. Although my English is weaker than my Vietnamese, I still understand the English dialogue better than the Vietnamese because the actors don't have authentic Vietnamese accents. It's incredibly frustrating and ruins the viewing experience for me. If you liked the book, don't watch the movie. If you are Vietnamese and grew up in Vietnam, try to find and read the version translated by Lê Tùng Châu-you will love it more.
Mai (2024)
A Disappointing Misfire
After eagerly anticipating "MAI," I left the theater feeling utterly disappointed. While the premise hinted at potential, the execution fell flat, leaving me disheartened by the overall experience.
One of the film's significant pitfalls lies in its script. The dialogue feels forced and artificial, needing more authenticity to engage viewers. Despite attempting to impart moral lessons, the script fails to address the film's underlying issues, leaving unresolved conflicts awkwardly lingering.
Additionally, the film needs help finding its comedic footing. While it endeavors to elicit laughter from the audience, the humor could be better, resulting in bland and forgettable attempts at comedy. Personally, I found myself unaffected by the film's comedic endeavors, a sentiment likely shared by many viewers.
This movie should be three stars, but I give it one star to offset those fake 10-star ratings.
Mulan (2020)
Typical Chinese kung fu movie
... but not as good. Storyline is boring, fight scenes are so so, even though the movie has all the big names like Jet Li, Donnie Yen ... What a big disappointment.
