The Ringer (1928)
remembrances of the 'Squeaker '
I know memories at my age (84) can play annoying tricks on you but I definitely remember seeing Alexander Knox in a film of the above name. The story line was about somebody who 'squeaked' on his friends and was under protection by the police, the character played by Alexander Knox, was the one to seek revenge. I vaguely remember that the Squeaker was played by an actor whose surname was Lawson. A black and white film with sound track. The final words in the film came from Alexander Knox as he made his get-away in a two-seater plane with his girl-friend in the rear cockpit was---'Do you love me, Cora-Ann'. Can anybody help?
Johnny Guitar (1954)
excellent film
It showed a feature of the growing of towns in the west, where citizens made and protected their own Laws. The acting of all was really superb. I saw the film when it first came out and have never forgotten it. Ward Bond taking a supporting role was a bit of a surprise, but gave him the opportunity to act. Sterling Hayden was great. But the most memorable performance by far was that of Mercedes Macambridge. Such intense concentration, such mastery over half-hearted fellow townspeople. She dominated every scene in which she appeared, and even some when she didn't!. How many films are remembered by its music. I can think of just six and Peggy Lee and Victor Young's 'Johnny Guitar' is up there with the best. they capture the whole brooding atmosphere of the film. I am now 83 years old and so much of this film is so memorable. Mercedes Macambridge as 'Emma' is still a bench-mark against which I judge any other actor.Alan.
