The War Zone (1999)
Quite shocking indeed
Well, I watched the film because of its overall good feedback and ratings. This time I wasn't to be disappointed. A very good performance by all actors in a movie that touched upon an extremely unpleasant and controversial topic. Everything presented in a very realistic and bleak way. Some of the scenes were definitely hard to stomach. There isn't really too much to say about the story, as it is rather straight forward. There is no guessing about where this leads to from the beginning. The characters are portrayed in a harsh and unadulterated way, in sharp contrast to the US movie versions, where a realistic portrayal seems to be too shocking for the average audience.
Dangerous Waters (2023)
Really really bad
What can I say ? Sometimes I wonder how people find the resources to waste on an absolute moronic film. This has nothing to do with budget limitations. The story and the acting were horrendous and truly unbelievable. It already started on the wrong footing when the car's starter motor refused to engage and the mother was tapping the windscreen wiper motor to get it going which it miraculously did so. It's not really an issue, but it wouldn't cost a lot of effort to at least get some of the details right. But that episode is representative for the whole film. Absolutely unbelievable. Even the 1 rating is too much.
Sons of Summer (2023)
Awfull, just awfull
Now I have got to waste 600 letters on a review when the title should already says everything. I actually only bothered to watch this movie seeing that the score was 7.2 on Imdb. How it ever got there is a mystery to me. The whole thing is an amateurisch mess. The acting was incredibly bad. The characters behaved in a complete illogical way. The introduction and what was supposed to be the headline in this movie about a murder committed 30 years earlier played no role whatsoever in the story. We have a two man mafia going about like a chicken with no head. I can only advice against wasting your time on this trash. There are some nice shots of wave riding, but that shouldn't serve as an excuse to watch this trash.
Influencer (2022)
Not good
My title is not very original, but then neither is this movie. Entertaining enough to kill the time, but certainly not deserving the relatively "high" rating it got on Imdb. I watched it also because of the exotic setting. It was Thailand alright, but void of any locals. The plot is confusing and doesn't make any sense. It's never made clear why the lead character does what she does. A lot of unnecessary inconsistencies in the story. I didn't know what to expect and as such wasn't that disappointed . Primarily gave it a try because of the rating and the location. It's not the worst I have seen, but I am only willing to give it a 3.
Hellbender (2021)
One big nothingburger
Please people that gave this movie a glowing review. What was it I missed ?
It started of good enough and the story could have made it interesting, but boy was I disappointed. Just the fact that the 5.8 is quite a high rating and that the overall ratings where quite decent that made me wanting to give it a go. Well the whole thing is entertaining enough to keep you watching till the end which leaves you trying to figure out if you missed something. The acting was good, but the story gave them very little to work with. Like I said, at the end of the day not worth watching it out. Therefore my rating of three.
Crater (2023)
terrible, just terrible
Seeing a company like Disney going to the dogs make one really sad. 54 million plus $ to produce this is pathetic. The only thing that was okay was the kids acting. Everything else is just one big nothing burger. The story was quite senseless and above all the movie didn't even intend to be at least somehow technically sound so if everything else failed at least it would have some educational value. Obviously nobody was in the slightest interested to produce a more "realistic" picture of how things on the moon would actually work. None existing airlocks, space suits that would even in an ultra low budget B movie look ridiculous. But at a budget this size it leaves one speechless. If I was an investor with this company I would get rid of my investment asap.
Intrusion (2021)
Mediocre
Not bad. The story might seem a bit far fetched, but if one takes the trouble to watch some of the real crime stories then the movie versions become lame in comparison. There are some really crazy people out there doing some really sick stuff. The movie however has quite a few holes in it. Especially the ending, or should I say, lack of ending was disappointing. There was no need for leaving things open ended and open for one's own interpretation. But overall not bad. Entertaining enough to give it a try. Once will be enough though. A pity that they missed the chance to make more out of this. It certainly would have been possible without any major alterations in the script.
River (2021)
Don't. Save yourself the embarrasment
IMDB should start with -1 ratings. Some things are that bad there is no lower floor. I have hardly watched something more boring. I could use the cliche about watching paint dry or grass growing, but that would be more entertaining then this piece of trash. Actors with zero acting talent. A script a 5 year old could have done a better job. Every time I see a piece of crap I tend to believe that it will be impossible to go lower. Well I must admit I am wrong on that one. I was really trying to find something of merit but to no avail. Don't even give it a try and believe the feedback. It really really is this bad.
Cerdita (2022)
A pig of a movie
There is this saying about putting lipstick on a pig. Well that certainly can be applied to this "master" piece. Financed by the EU it says in the beginning. Well, I do agree with trying to promote European productions as a counter weight to the Hollywood rubbish we are literally inundated with. But, please don't be trying to be more papal then the pope. I gave this movie a fair chance. Whether it was the story or the acting . The lead actress must have been desperate to accept the role she had to play. The story itself had plot holes huge enough to put an elephant through. I won't be elaborating as they are obvious enough if you are willing to waste your time watching this nonsense.
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead (2003)
Another waste of time
I never had a chance to watch this movie before, so this was a first view of a movie made 20 years ago. So, the verdict ? A 3 star review by the skin of it' teeth. A very slow progressing story full with holes. There is a plot and it is developing towards the end, but with little to no sense making. Nothing is made very clear at any moment into the story. Especially the end is quite nonsensical and confusing. I suppose it's okay for a one time watch, but certainly not to be repeated. The name s of the actors involved made one to belief that there would be more to come out of this story and plot.
Nefarious (2023)
Absolutely stunning
I am lost for words. I gave this gem a well deserved 10. For every aspect. Dialogue, story, acting, coherence and so one. This has been one of the most outstanding horror movies I ever saw. When could you say that a horror movie, which actually might be the wrong definition, was eerily realistic ? This one was. No gory blood baths and ridiculous scares, but absolutely superb acting by the main character. I read a lot of the comments and most people seem to share my view. There are those however that found the Christian message to propagandistic. Well that is a stupid argument as all the movies around the subject of demonic possession involve the church doctrine on the subject. And everyone seem to include some sort of message in their movie productions lately. Mostly of the woke nature. I found the underlying message definitely intriguing and thought provoking. This is one hell of a movie and the main actor did some really impressive acting at par with Hollywood icons. Do watch it. You will not regret it.
The Lightship (1985)
Refreshing
Indeed, as my headline says, refreshing. This movie that goes back 37 years as of today is the complete antidote to the hyped up super hero action movies of today. Heroes and villains alike are no indestructible super beings. Just a solid movie with good actors and a plausible story without any unrealistic and illogical happenings. After seeing a couple of the latest "action" movies where the lead characters would put Batman and superman to shame in their ability to survive barrages of bullets and other bone breaking events, it is refreshing to see that before people actually cared about a plausible plot when making a movie that didn't make you feel like an idiot watching it.
The Stranger (2022)
Aaarrghhhh
What a terrible, terrible absolute piece of crap movie. I gave it a fair chance, but should have known better. I don't understand how somebody can concoct such a horrible "movie" and is not ashamed o unleash it upon humanity. A piece of advice to others checking IMBD ratings before watching something. If the reviews are basically divided between 1 and 10 you know that something is fishy and most probably the ones are those to go by. You watch this "masterpiece" until the end and wonder what you have been watching. No coherent story. Nothing scary if just the experience of watching this out which is shocking enough on it's own. There should be the option of giving zero minuses as there seem to be no bottom to what producers nowadays come up with, and when you think it can't get worse one is proved wrong.
Extraction 2 (2023)
Complete and utter nonsense
What can I say ? Again the American hero is here to save the world. Brainless savages get slaughtered by the dozens. All waiting to receive their death sentence by the righteous ones. I never expected this to be anything else then a action movie with minimal story or common sense. But somehow it becomes more of a comedy when countries like Georgia or Austria have heavily armed foreign mercenaries act on their territory with total impunity. Using army grade weaponry to have their own private war on foreign soil. I don't mind the usual cliches to much. As long as they don't make me feel a complete moron watching this. Packed with action scenes, but totally void of any believable storyline.
Underwater (2020)
What did I miss ?
I gave this movie a second chance, thinking hat my previous 2 rating was a bit harsh after all. Well not at all. I understand that it is becoming increasingly difficult to come up with new ideas and plots in an over saturated movie landscape, but certain things have nothing to do with money nor artistic talent. We here have a science fiction movie that plays out at the deepest spot on earth. At around 11 km below the surface of the ocean. The technology to be able to build any structure there must be mind boggling. At the beginning of the movie the scene plays out in he washroom with dilapidated ceramic tiling and antiquated sinks . Hardly the environment one would expect in such a high tec facility. And this goes through the whole 95 minutes. One thing is science fiction, the other science fantasy. One doesn't have to be pedantic, but it doesn't cost anything to try being somewhat scientific where the script allows.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Very disappointing
As I put in the headline. Very disappointing for a number of reasons. First I got the impression from Imdb that it was at par with Carnival row. That was absolutely not the case. Carnival row had a story and great acting. The wheel of time has a confusing, and for me impossible to follow story. It is also desperately trying to be woker then woke. No problem with diversity, but it's to obvious that it's just there to adhere to this "new" inclusiveness rage. I gave it a three, although I was tempted to be even going lower. That would however be unfair as there is so much complete and utter rubbish out there that I no longer know where to put the bar. I am still trying to figure out if it has any merit at all. The other thing is indeed as somebody else pointed out. What is the intended audience ?
Carnival Row (2019)
Incredible and unbeatable
I always have a look at the overall ratings. With 75000 reviews and an average rating of 7.8 one knows this is a top production. I can not understand by any means that an incredible 1700 voters gave this masterpiece a one star rating. Just unbelievable. This is one of the best productions I have ever seen. The atmosphere conveyed through the Victorian steam punk setting is beyond words. The acting is superb. The fantasy characters are absolutely convincing and realistic. I am normally very weary of allocating the top rating, but in this case it should be 10***. It will be difficult to beat this fantasy tale in any respect. It is plainly superb.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Should have known better
Indeed, I should have known better. First to trust the overall rating on IMDB and secondly to give a "found footage" another try. I was going to rate this movie a 1, but there are even worse productions out there so I decided reluctantly on a two. This is not a low budget production neither which would have given it a bit more merit. I see some comments here referring to having to understand the movie to appreciate it. Well, I am sorry but I don't understand. I suppose it's like looking at one of these abstract paintings. You can see whatever you imagine or want to see. Like I said. Gave it a try and regretted having done so.
Dog Gone (2023)
pathetic
Of course all you dog and animal lovers will have watched this movie. Based o a "true" story after all . But it can go beyond the ridiculous which this production certainly did. The sugar will stick with you for a long time. Nothing wrong with a bit of sentimental story telling. But here we have the story of an obviously very privileged family that could afford dedicating themselves 24/24 to finding their family pet, no expenses spared. Nothing really wrong with the premise. But to much is to much. It comes to the stage where one feels uncomfortable with the amount of fakeness and over the top artificial emotionality..
The Menu (2022)
dissapointissimo
I do make it a point to check the feedback on IMDB before watching a movie. Both the amount of votes and the average score. If there are few feedbacks the score tends to be unreliable as it was probably people involved with the production who would give it a high score. But not when we have 64K and an average rating of 7.4. That would put it among the top productions. So I was expecting something extraordinary. Well extra ordinary it was, but for all the wrong reasons. The acting was good, but they had nothing to work with. This was no comedy, black or otherwise, no satire no nothing. I couldn't even put this movie in a category, unless there was one called avoid at all costs. I probably should have rated it a bit better because of the actors but I can't. The overall product is just to terrible. Seldom have I been so disappointed.
Resurrection (2022)
It would have been kind not to watch this movie out
I make it a point of reading the comments before, and boy was I disappointed. Yes, some comments where spot on while others have given this movie glowing reviews. This movie was captivating and the acting was really good. One can only guess as to what had happened to the lead character 22 years ago . It all collapses though when nearing the end. There was no revelation of any sort. Certainly not one that would make sense . Maybe I missed out on something, but reading some of the comments here I don't seem to be alone with this. I suppose one can fabricate their own version of events, but I found it very disappointing that the actors talent was wasted on some pretencious psycho construct.
Bait (2000)
What a load of rubbish
I only came across this movie by accident. Since it already had been around for over twenty years and I hadn't heard about it I didn't expect a great deal. But even with my expectations at a minimum it still managed to disappoint. Acting, especially by the lead character Jamie Fox extremely disappointing. Some commentators here seem to find this movie comical which puzzles me. Nothing comical, a totally unbelievable and exaggerated story with to many flaws to mention. Normally I wouldn't comment, but just give the rating I think it deserves, but since it has a 5.7 overall rating from over 13000 votes I feel the need to slightly twerk the count. On top of everything a massive budget of 57 million $ with nothing to show for.
The Mafu Cage (1978)
An absolute gem
Maybe it didn't deserve a straight 10 rating, but certainly 9 . I didn't watch this movie as the ratings weren't very good and some of the feedback was downright abysmal. How wrong they are . And although this movie dates back to 1978 which makes it nearly 45 years old by now it still was captivating by today's standard. It certainly is not a horror movie , but a very well made psychological thriller. The performance by Carol Kane as the mad sister Cissy was absolutely convincing. And for once the ending was not open for interpretation by the viewer, but completely in line with the story. I just regret not have watched it before. Highly recommended.
Gigi & Nate (2022)
Heart warming
I did some research on the net because somewhere it said the movie was inspired by true events . It, was, but of course a lot of stories are as there are so many people in similar circumstances that it is only reasonable to expect to find similarities . The person that it was loosely inspired by was Ned Sullivan who got paralyzed in car accident . Anyway the movie was very inspiring and the best actor was definitely the small Capuchin monkey. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it as it is a nice variation on the violence laden movies we are getting lately. The only thing that I found annoying had nothing to do with the movie itself, but depicting the story from the perspective of an obviously very well off family who had the means to give there son the best care money could buy .
The Woman King (2022)
Stunning movie
Very well made movie with loads of action in an exotic setting. This was certainly a very enjoyable 2 ¼ hours of pure entertainment . The movie claims to be inspired by true events , although I think that should be understood very loosely . The fact is that there was the kingdom of the Dahomey that had an army of female warriors. Anyway, this has been a welcome movie in times when the quality of productions seem to be in a downward spiral . I gave it a rating of nine although I could just as easily have given it a 10. It certainly would have been merited. Like I said, very enjoyable and action packed . Violence, but not for the sake of violence .
