Star Trek: Discovery: The Vulcan Hello (2017)
What the hell is this?
Seriously what the hell is this. Lost for words.
Ummmm ... no.
Second seating: OK I've had a think and sat down again. So I have certain expectations when I watch shows. They need to be good. I also have certain expectations from something which is labelled "Star Trek". I can't elaborate beyond that because so much is wrong I don't know where to start.
All I can say is I didn't even make it to the end of the first episode because I couldn't stand it. Could not STAND it. So, technically this is not a complete review.
Last note, I don't need SJW themes rammed into my face when I am trying to watch escapist space adventures. It interferes with my leisure time and frankly makes me want to vomit.
Thanks for everyone in Hollywood who doesn't get it and are now ruining Star Trek.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
The trailer was well packaged
This film was supposed to be about a supernatural threat, but the film is so noisy in its exhaustive depiction of "arty" commercial culture that the main plot idea failed to dominate audience attention.
At times I felt like I was watching a daytime soap which lapsed into "Goosebumps". Not scary at all.
The characters were mostly quite vacuous and I didn't care what happened to them. I was just glad when they were gone.
I don't think I could recommend this film to anyone, either horror-lovers or art-lovers.
The Orville: Krill (2017)
Great Ep
This ep has some great buddy-style adventure and fun gags as we watch Ed and Gordon flounder as spies. It also has a good dose of storytelling about the adversarial Krill race and some dramatic themes, without it being too much to take. The best one so far, in my opinion.
The Orville: A Happy Refrain (2019)
A thorn among roses
I appreciate this series overall, which is why I write this.
Weak romance idea which plays out with painful predictability. Usually writers can get away with a weak plot if the secondary plot makes up for it. But what is the secondary plot of this episode? Bortus gets a moustache... Neither were dramatic or comedic enough to classify as either drama or comedy - probably the worst demo of the show being unclear about which direction it is aiming.
