Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Tarantino is losing his touch
This movie is just a mess.
It relies so much on heavy-handed narration to carry the plot which is a jumbled mess. It's like someone wrote a list of things and people they liked in the 70s, smooshed them into a movie and wove a mediocre plotline through those things.
It avoids gravity or depth like the plague to just float from thing to thing and hope well-known actors bring enough enthusiasm from audiences.
Joker (2019)
Joaquin carries but it doesn't have a point.
Joaquin Phoenix did everything he could with this material but it just doesn't seem to have a point whether for lack of having one or cowardice to say something. It even is set back in time to avoid being too current.
Are the rich bad? Is exploitation bad? Is our viral culture bad? Is how we treat the mentally ill bad? Nothing is seriously discussed or focused on at all and even when it comes closest to these points it undermines them immediately.
Then there's the outright plagiarism from The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver.
I firmly believe that if this wasn't about the Joker most people wouldn't care one bit.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
It's a Return of the Jedi ripoff
It's a nearly exact ripoff of Return of the Jedi with more plotholes, lazy macguffins and plain bad writing.
They literally couldn't even come up with a new villain. THE VILLAIN IS LITERALLY STILL PALPATINE.
Even bringing Lando back in the beginning and the end doing the exact things he did in Return of the Jedi.
The Rey and Kylo story even ends up being a bad parody of Luke and Vader.
Yoda gets replaced with Luke and Leia. Like guides and Leia dies from thebquivalent of sending a space text.
JJ Abrams should stick to reworks. Apparently all he can do lately.
