Honkytonk Man (1982)
An underrated movie
What can I say about Honkytonk Man except it is a clear indication of Eastwood's reputation as a risk taker. A road movie, it features an interesting boy character who learns the harsh realities of life. In the short space of a couple of days, he will have experimented love (first in a brothel, then probably later with the girl they met along the road) and death (he'll have to cope with a burial). The young female "singer" they -reluctantly-take with them provides the movie with the comic relief it does need: you should hear her sing "My bonnie" in a shrill voice. The ballads Eastwood sings are moving and tuneful(I don't know if he is dubbed for them, but anyway it's made with taste and respect for the audience). The audition is the highlight of the movie, Eastwood seems to sing as if it were a matter of life and death(and it is anyway). The actor/director avoids pathos and melodrama. Once again, it was a very risky move to play such a character at a time when success story was the golden rule.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Nice continuation of the incredibly immersive Harry Potter books
He sixth installment in the incredibly popular wizard series carries on the tradition of following the books. The half-blood prince probably won't bring with it the expectations that came with the Philosopher's stone but then it is expected to be lower key as the franchise comes to a closure- there remains just one more book after this (deathly hollows). However, this film is darker in tone and should be headed for more mature territory just like the series.
Broken Arrow (1996)
(A decent enough summer blockbuster).
Broken Arrow is a big budget blockbuster film from John Woo starring John Travolta and Christian Slater who are pilots assigned to carry a nuclear weapon when Travolta decides to go rogue. Travolta excels as the bad guy(as also seen in Face Off) and the scenes are over the top in typical Woo fashion. Set pieces aside this is a rudimentary action film one can watch with a few friends.
21 Jump Street (2012)
A decent remake of an 80s show
As you would be aware by now 21 Jump Street is a remake of the television show from the 80s with the same name. This is a nice remake and it could be said that the film serves more of a nostalgic homage to the 80s than it does trying to be a standalone feature film. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are good as the mismatched duo and some side characters are quite funny. The film is more of a list of running gags and action pieces. Watch out for the cameo by Depp.
The Box (2009)
Decent effort by the Donnie Darko guy
This is a weird movie and after leaving the theater I couldn't make much sense of it. Made by the same guy who helmed Donnie Darko The Box is about a couple who receive a mysterious person one day who gives them a box and a proposition. The acting by James Mardsen and Cameron Diaz is serviceable and some sequences are pretty good. But then the plot needs to make sense. Looking around most reviews are similar in nature- a bit of a head scratcher. Still you can see it if you like these Twilight Zone kind of movies.
Air (2015)
great actors and a lot of expectation are squished
A fantastic premise; great actors and a lot of expectation are squished by this damp squib of a movie.
Maleficent (2014)
(A great gothic tale
Jolie is sublime in the role and the great set design and atmosphere add to the charms of this delightful film by Robert Straumberg. Go watch it in the theaters the way it is meant to be seen. (A great gothic tale)
