Roma (2018)
Absolutely Incredible....
I found Roma absolutely incredible. The best filmgoing experience I've had this year, maybe one of the best ever. It's so hard for me to describe what made this special to me, but I think it comes down to just how alive it was. It was a little slice of a normal, happy and sad life of Cleo, and the people around her.
There's so much to unpack in this, but what really stood out was the acting, direction, sound design and especially cinematography. Roma represents Cuarón at his best and most confident as a storyteller, and the intimacy of Roma is almost too hard to bear.
I do want to touch on the hospital scene, though. It's the tensest I've been in the cinema in a long time, and it was all done in masterfully choreographed single-angle takes that ended up lasting well beyond several minutes. When I saw the liveless little baby body, I broke down, harder than I think I've ever done at a film. The brutality of seeing the doctors cover the child in the background while Cleo was still in her birthgiving position was too much to handle.
When she finally makes peace with herself at the beach, saying that she didn't really want the child, and the family all hug her, it almost hit me even more than the hospital. The fact that she realised that she has more love from the family than she could ever need, and that she loves them just as much was the perfect wrap-up of such a beautiful character arc.
Roma is a masterpiece. I can't wait to see it again. I had to call both my parents after seeing it. It reminds you (much like Children of Men) of what a precious gift life is, and that each one matters as much as the next one
Vice (2018)
Just Perfect....
Seeing Christian Bale fat in a role is like witnessing Christian Bale being thin in a role.
Sam Rockwell as Bush is the most perfect casting imaginable. They even did a fake nose that doesn't seem like it's going to be distracting. He and Bale look so accurate that it's kind of hilarious that they decided that Rumsfeld could just be a completely unaltered Steve Carell.
Bird Box (2018)
I loved it
I have to say that the Girl toddler actress was phenomenal as for a child actor. I hate children in movies because they are annoying but I felt extremely sorry for her during the river scenes where she knew she was meant to probably sacrifice herself, it was amazing acting for such a child. Even the scene with Tom when Malorie doesn't let him finish the story. Both kids were adorable.
Welcome to Marwen (2018)
Welcome to Marwen
Is Zemeckis' new thing to turn critically acclaimed documentaries into narrative films. While The Walk (based off of Man on Wire) is a decent movie, I just never felt anything with this film. It felt like a shell of the original documentary.
If anyone is interested in seeing the good version of the film, the film is based off the documentary Marwencol, which is excellent.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
The whole movie was delightful
The whole movie was delightful but Mary's expression when Georgie asked how much she weighed was just hilarious
I smiled constantly. It evokes the perfect feel which is difficult to do with such a long span between movies.
I am glad The great Julie Andrews did not make a cameo. Mary Poppins needs to own every scene with her gravitas and a Julie Andrews cameo would have interrupted that.
Aquaman (2018)
Overall, a really solid family friendly...
Positives
The core of the movie is heavily inspired from the works of Jeff Parker with the hints of Geoff Johns. I'm a big fan of Jeff Parker's work so it's a big positive in my book.
Fantastic visuals and many of the scenes looks like real life painting to me, especially the diving scene with The Trench. Lots of color pallette as well. I was genuinely surprised this movie didn't got an Oscar nomination for VFX.
Octupus on drums being hype man for the fight? Asian Jim? OG Mary Poppins as Krathen? Hell yea!
Those wide angel and tracking shots were stunning. This movie in general had some great action sequences with fluid camera shots which were a delight to watch.
Score was pretty decent actually (not soundtrack), pretty reminiscent to that of Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy
Comic accurate costumes (Take that Bryan Singer)
Although Black Manta scenes were limited, he was a badass and owned every scene he was in.
The 3rd act was simply incredible. One of best 3rd act in comic book movie probably.
Negatives
Simply one of the worst music choices. Ugh, Pitbull doing Africa by Toto.
DCEU really need to fix their poor dialogues and writing. Some of the lines were really cheesy and they tried to cram too many storylines and the plot was predictable.
If I had a nickle for every time a conversation got interrupted by an explosion....
Orm performance could have been way better without the over the top dialogues.
Overall, a really solid family friendly flick with some flaws but offers a great visual experience, action sequences. I would recommend watching this in IMAX or 4DX.
Westworld: Reunion (2018)
