Biutiful (2010)
2/10
Extremely depressing movie wrote by probably very sick people.

I had really high hopes about this movie. Inarritu and Bardem are two of my favorites names when it comes to movies. But it was a very big disappointment. All you get to see for at least two hours (I couldn't make it through to the end)is deep misery, then some more incredible misery, and more disturbing misery in top of all the other misery. After two hours I felt physically sick and I had to stop watching. What is the point of this absurd and grotesque movie? What is "biutiful" about it? All I could see was horrible. All I could not see was horrible. If there was anything "biutiful", some smart message buried inside all this sick movie I certainly couldn't get it. The words that come to my mind when I think about what I saw are the words which end Apocalypse Now: the horror...the horror!

Overrated

This movie receives too much praise. I was a bit disappointed by it. First of all what's the story with the camera shaking all the time? It almost made me sick! It seems there is not a single steady shot in this movie. If the intention was to convey some subtle impression of permanent action the target was missed, because all it managed to do was make me dizzy and hope the movie will end faster. Even the starting credits were a pain to watch because of the sudden flashes of bright light in between black screens. There are lots and lots of talking, some Hollywood inspired action with a slight Brazilian flavor, a pretty common script and a horrifying description of the way things work in Rio. I certainly hope the movie grossly exaggerates the situation. It may be the best box office Brazilian hit, but certainly it isn't the best Brazilian movie.

Carlos (2010)

The merry life of a murderer
29 January 2011
I just spent 330 min. watching this movie. I guess I have too much free time. Because it certainly didn't deserve it. Shortly, we have a big, macho "Carlos" whom you'll get to see in almost every shot of the extralong movie, who gets all the cool chicks, smokes every damn cigarette on earth, drinks tons of whiskey and dances like it's the end of the world, all while making millions and millions in the lucrative industry of killing innocent people. Blasting them to pieces, shooting them and so forth. Isn't it "revolutionary"? Noble? Full of idealism? Isn't it a heroic "fight for the oppressed"? People now make movies about his life, some write books, so as not to miss the great personality that he was! Well, he's a murderer of innocent people and, in my book, he doesn't deserve a biographic movie at all, even more so one portraying him as a complex personality worthy of analysis.
