Who Is Erin Carter? (2023)
Mindless entertainment
Good mindless entertainment with a minimally acceptable plot (it's filled with enough holes to resemble Swiss cheese) based on a hugely implausible premises. Nevertheless, good fun if you lower your expectations. The acting is decent and the production values are good. It manages to mainta8n enough suspense to make it worth watching. In general, I'd say it is the sort of fare I would expect from summer broadcast television series but it doesn't have the quality I normally look for in a streaming series. Otherwise it is an engaging treatment of a familiar trope: an other unassuming individual is thrust into a situation that reveals she has a surprising set of skills and a hidden sinister past.
Foundation (2021)
Inspired by Asimov but not a dramatization of Foundation
If you will only be satisfied by a film that adheres closely to Asimov's Foundation novels, do not watch this series. You will be disappointed and cranky. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a good science fiction series with substance that is based on Asimov's premise, then you will enjoy this series. Asimov's masterful novels inspired the television drama, but television is a vastly different genre from novels. The series attempts to capture something of the atmosphere and epic breadth of the novels, I find the drama engaging and well done, but I am determined to regard it on its terms as an homage to Asimov rather than as a faithful dramatization of the novel.
Lisey's Story (2021)
Best King Screen Adaptation
Of the several adaptations of King's work to small or big screen, this strikes me as the best. The characters, portrayed by a superb cast, are well developed and complex. The videography supports the lyrical quality of the story well. The tale sits astride the tenuous boundary separating horror and fantasy. Viewers should expect a drama far more subtle and more beautiful than the typical fare of King films. This is a poignant and mesmerizing exploration of grief, love, and trauma.
Cosmos (2019)
Thoughtful Sci fi
This isn't your flick if you're looking for an adventure movie. It explores the human side of science and its mystery. There is adventure, but it's the adventure and exhilaration of discovery as humanity sees itself mirrored in the stars. An uplifting reflection on the human spirit.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Intelligent flick
This isn't your average action packed post apocalyptic space opera. It is an intelligent film with a well constructed narrative. Much better than the usual fare.
Roswell, New Mexico (2019)
Pales by comparison
The original Roswell had a much more haunting and suspenseful atmosphere, and the chemistry among the actors was far more powerful and intriguing. The remake just doesn't rise to the standards set by the original. The new Roswell feels two-dimensional by comparison despite attempts to update it and make the characters more diverse. The remake serves primarily to make me nostalgic for the original. Nevertheless, I keep watching it in the hope that it will find its stride.
