Eragon (2006)
Movie is entertaining, if...
This movie was not as bad as the official reviews and the reviews of some fans of the book would indicate. The movie did NOT try to be Lord of the Rings and Star Wars combined, as some have said.
The movie was entertaining, if you overlook these dreadful errors by the director and the overuse of the term "farm boy", even quite good.
Nevertheless, the background music, the narration, and a few other bad choices did combine to make the movie seem "hokie" early on and gave it a sense of pseudo-grandeur that was NOT part of reading the books. It took away from the suspenseful feeling that should have been presented by the film and permeated one while reading the book.
Eragon was fairly true to the book details, if not presenting the spirit or fundamental mood of the book.
Another major problem that movie has is that it is neither a children's' movie nor an adult's movie. I recommend spending your cash on the book rather than an admission ticket. Even more-so than is often the case, the book IS better than the movie.
When Eldest is made, there is a need for a new director and new music.
...First Do No Harm (1997)
Really Bad Movie
This movie was really bad.
Meryl Streep walked through her lines. It is the only POOR performance I have ever seen her give. She was forgettable.
Other characters were worse. Everyone except the small boy was pitiful. He did the best job of anyone, including Streep.
When I rented this movie, I did not know it was made for TV. After I watched it, I could easily tell. There was essentially no character development and parts were at best "walk-throughs". What a pity to waste all the actors' and actresses' time on such folly. I would absolutely NOT watch this again, nor would I recommend it to anyone but a sworn enemy.
I have seen worse movies, but not many.
Eight Below (2006)
Good Story, But
This was a very nice story. The story line was interesting and watchable. This is a very good family flick.
The "plot" is shallow and predictable. Don't expect the unexpected except with the dogs fine the whale carcass. There is some excitement then.
The best acting performance is turned in by a member of the genus canine. So is the second best performance, etc. In fact, the all of the good performances are done by the dogs.
The setting is beautiful from start to finish.
The movie is only a 5, the humans get a 3, the dogs get a 7.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
A Da Sappointment
This movie is a significant disappointment. It moves entirely slowly, unlike the book itself. It is tied up in dialog and interactions between characters that destroy the excitement generated by reading the books and extends the movie until it is to long for the story it tells.
Tom Hanks is completely bearable in this movie and that is about all. A very disappointing performance by Hanks and Howard describe this disappointing movie.
This movie should have been rate a 9 or 10 by me, instead it gets a lousy 6. That is a generous rating.
This is a boring movie made from an exciting book.
I think that is somewhat difficult to do. What about it Ron?
