The Irishman (2019)
Pacino ruins a masterpiece
This is a terrific movie a-la Goodfellas.
Every actor does their job, except, as usual, Al Pacino. As Jimmy Hoffa, Pacino does his routine and lazy Al Pacino shtick. You can never NOT see that this is Al, reprising every role he's had since The Godfather. He gives the same exact "performance" in every role. He doesn't even make an effort to change the Al Pacino accent and vocal inflections. Scorsese must be somehow in debt to this lousy one-dimensional actor.
Billions (2016)
Some Characters are Insufferable
I love the show, but cannot stand Chuck's Father, which is awful enough, but Chuck is also a complete a-h...e as a human being.
There is nothing even remotely entertaining about these two, except to drive the story. Their importance to the narrative could be accomplished with much less face-time.
The ABC Murders (2018)
Gripping.
This production is Agatha at her best. We have no idea what is going on, not a clue, and the Director extends this excruciatingly throughout each and every second. The use of a period typewriter tapping out, slowly and in close-up, a multitude of menacing threats to Hercule is a novel method of dragging out the viewer's agony.
The acting is led by John Malkovich, with a very, very convincing French accent.
The Fall: The Gates of Light (2016)
Season 3? Really?
So, a bloodless serial killer with a penchant for sexy brunettes, winds up in the hospital after being shot, and is tended by a Guess What? A sexy, brunette nurse! And, he has amnesia about his vicious murders. No problem, a crack lawyer with a Trumpish hair-style will dive in and defend him to the death.
Meanwhile, John Lynch and Gillian Anderson continue their 3 -season duel to prove who is the most expressionless, lame actor.
Great show, but Season 3 is an insult to Netflix and it's loyal viewers!
The Fall (2013)
Was Season Three necessary?
It was all wrapped up in Season 2; A few more episodes could have neatly wrapped up the family impact, the Detective's stories, etc.
Instead, we are forced to go thru a 3rd season, where the killer has amnesia after being shot. I can't take another season of a bland Gillian Anderson attempting to keep a dead case alive.
The Fall: His Troubled Thoughts (2016)
Why a sexy brunette as nurse?
Come on man, they place a sexy brunette nurse as his caretaker in the hospital, when his penchant is sexy brunettes? Yikes!
The Florida Project (2017)
Less kids, more adults needed
Good movie, but way too much reliance on ten year olds running around plotlessly.
Goliath (2016)
Terrific show with a great cast
I binged through Season One, with total absorption. Nobody plays Everyman like Billy Bob, and William Hurt always shines as an evil foul.
Season two provided an equally enjoyable plot, with Paul Williams turning in a great turn as an expert on the LA underbelly.'
I'm Dying Up Here (2017)
Great Show
A great production, but we groan whenever Goldie has a scene. The actress is grating and trite in her portrayal. She was miscast terribly.
I'm Dying Up Here: Gone with the Wind (2018)
Terrific Series
I'm Dying Up Here is a wonderfully acted and gritty series about the incredibly hard odds facing up and coming comics, set in the seventies. Many of the characters and stories insinuate, or occasionally portray real comedians (Richard Prior.) All of the backstories, and intertwining lives of the comedians are portrayed with excitement, hope, and dread. You cheer for the characters who make it, and grieve along with those who meet a less generous fate.
My only complaint is with Melissa Leo's portrayal of Goldie, the tough-as-nails owner of LA's premier comedy club, and launching ground for successful comedians. She is constantly Zippo-lighting a cigarette between clenched teeth as she delivers non-stop stream-of-consciousness threats and advice to her needy herd of comedians. She is wholly unsuited for this role, which requires a hint of a formerly sexy and sympathetic woman. Her scenes are akin to a loud alarm bell that ruin the continuity of the story, while remaining essential to the plot.
