Barry: wow (2023)
The art of subverting expectations
If you went into the episode expecting or almost wanting a Barry rampage where he goes full Rambo and single handedly ends the story by killing Hank and Fuches and maybe dying in the process then you are the target audience of the "the mask collector" movie at the end of the episode.
I still cannot believe how Fuches is the character who I ended up liking the most after this episode. His speech about being a poser was genius writing because it showed exactly what this show is about. Hank and Cousineau lied to themselves, pretending to be someone they're not. And they paid the price. Although Cousineau did get his justice by killing Barry but the whole world sees it completely differently. Sally finally accepted her flaws and herself for what she did and she was redeemed. Fuches was redeemed as he broke the cycle with not killing Barry and saving John. I have a theory that Fuches only went to save John and not to kill Barry or Hank. Barry wished for redemption and his son to have a good life. In the end Barry was painted as a hero thus getting his redemption although underserved. His son and wife got a normal life as well.
The final movie scenes were brilliant. Shows how Hollywood biopics take out the soul of stories and just fill it with cliches. It was the perfect satire and I love how the violence was glorified in the movie despite never being shown that way in the show. A very valid and cutting criticism of Hollywood's depiction of 'heroic' violence.
Take a bow Bill Hader. What an actor, what a writer and what a director. He's created an absolute masterpiece. Anthony, Stephen, Sarah and Henry have been beyond amazing throughout the show. Specially Anthony brought to life the character of Hank so well and made it iconic. Sarah and Stephen were so so good in the finale. Sarah in the speech to John confessing her sins and Stephen in the 'poser' speech. I'm in awe of this show and forever will be. Gonna miss this show a lot. Excited to see what the cast and crew have in store for us after this in their respective careers because they all deserve to do more stuff as good as this.
Shrinking: Fortress of Solitude (2023)
Take a bow
I'm loving this Jason Segel comeback. He's an exceptional comedy actor and proves he's pretty good at dramatic acting too with this episode. Harrison Ford is super funny.
The writing is what makes this show so awesome. Brett Goldstein, you're a hero. Couldn't ever imagine Roy Kent of all people would be so good at writing melancholy scenes and the emotional beats which are so well set up and executed.
Loved the conversation of the three therapists, the coffee scene as well as the counselor scene. This episode made me laugh out loud quite a bit. Jason Segel, take a bow. Brett Goldstein, take a bow. Bill Lawrence, take a bow. Harrison Ford, take a bow.
Qala (2022)
Every frame is beautiful
Qala is a milestone for cinematography and lighting in indian cinema. The music is top notch too. The singers sound brilliant and makes you wonder why bollywood songs have been so forgettable despite the presence of such talent. Acting by Triptii and Swastika is very good but Babil looks wooden most of the times.
Screenplay is something that seems weak. Some scenes look out of place, the characters are all surfacely defined and don't make you feel much for them despite a big screentime. The direction is very good. Lot of symbolism and each frame is carefully and smartly chosen. This film is made with a passion and it shows on the screen. Wish I could've experienced this on the big screen.
Om Shanti Om (2007)
Made me fall in love with movies
This was one of the first movies I ever watched. I was 8/9 then. It made me cry, laugh, worry and celebrate at times. It still does. The feelings it evokes are so special.
The parody nature of it is quite apparent and if you're familiar with bollywood, it will make the film much more enjoyable for you. The movie made me fall in love with movies and also my favourite star ever: SRK.
Deepika has a fantastic debut. She has acted so much better in her future films but she has never looked as good. Rampal is okay. Talpade is good and his chemistry with SRK is brilliant.
Lastly I want to thank Farah Khan for making this film which had such amazing impact on me.
Sixer (2022)
Excellent background score
Tvf hits it out of the park yet again. Shivankit is brilliant as expected. His father's role is played to perfection as well. Great acting by all the secondary characters. My favourite characters were Nagu, Gargi, Rajesh.
Writing is very well done though a little cliche at times. Some good subplots are created and continued well but the resolution is missing like in the case of Rajesh and his wife and the aftermath of their argument. Or the Arshad-coach angle.
The star of the show for me is the background score. Elevates each and every scene. Kudos to the TVF team for another fantastic series. You guys deserve much much more.
Rooney (2022)
Fantastic. Grips you from the first moment and never lets go!
I very seldom write reviews on anything I watch, but after finishing this documentary, I had to. Wayne Rooney is the player that made me love football and made me love Manchester United. This documentary was a great insight into the career of the ultimate team player.
Kudos to the team for the way they approached the sensitive and controversial part of his story and didn't shy away from them. It was fascinating to see what was rooney thinking in the important moments of his career. Loved the scenes with his wife and their little boys.
The sound design is the ultimate MVP of the documentary in my opinion. The use of music and even commentary during the football scenes are so well handled. Congratulations to the director and rest of the team for this treat for all football fans.
Sanju (2018)
Sanju is more of a friendship movie and a really great one at that!
Coming directly to the point, Ranbir Kapoor delivers a nuanced portrayal of a character who is not the best at making choices but is stoll very lovable. Ranbir once again shines as an actor and after Rockstar, YJHD, tamasha and now sanju, i have full confidence that he will be having a great great career. Vicky Kaushal is the best actor in this film and he shines through and through. Paresh Rawal is so convincing and charming that you instantly root for him. Its so refreshing to see him in movies like this and not brainless comedies like welcome back. The supporting cast does its job very well and everyone in their best form.
The direction and screenplay is very gripping and keeps you excited at every point. Rajkumar Hirani can do no wrong when it comes to direction.
The story seems more like a friendship tale than a biopic and the movie benefits from this. The emotions have been wonderfully portrayed by the two most promising young actors in today's time.
The best thing about the movie was that sanjay dutt wasnt shown as a great guy who was trapped but it shows that he made some mistakes and he paid for them.
All in all, a must watch for movie-lovers like me.
Best scene: All scenes with ranbir and vicky together.
Worst scenes: The drug sequences, it seemed very cheesy!
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
YOU SHOSHO NOT MISS THIS!
Finally, it arrived.
And what a great addition to the MCU. I just got out of the movies and i am overwhelmed by the emotion.
The russo brothers had a big job cut out for them, and boy did they deliver in style. It is absurd to think about a movie with so many main characters. And the directors achieved it with sheer brilliance.
The writers managed to create a tearjerker with perfect proportion of all elements. Nothing seemed out of place in the story.
The soundtrack is as always great.
The fight scenes are very well choreographed and brilliantly filmed and edited.
The villain, Thanos is exceptional. Finally marvel delivered a great great villain. His back story and aim was well done.
Finally i would conclude by saying it's definitely the best marvel movie and also one of the best superhero movies of all time. It definitely deserves all the hype its getting.
