Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Transgender Rights II (2022)
Amazing episode, disgusting ratings
This was a well-researched, scientific and thought-provoking piece on transgender rights. Honestly, it is disgusting that this episode is the lowest rated episode of Last Week Tonight, ever. Just goes to show why we still need Pride and allies. Transphobia is alive and well. Look, I get that things you don't understand are scary. But blind hate and ignorance are not the way to go when there are real human beings that are hurt by your opinions and comments. Just spare a thought for the person that watches this, thinks 'wow, this episode perfect, I can use this piece to explain to my mom why I need gender-affirming care' and then realizing that this is John Oliver's least well received "take". Shame.
Fleabag: Episode #2.3 (2019)
Why wasn't the Finnish guy Finnish?
He was Scandinavian with a Scandinavian accent. The Finnish people look and sound completely different, if they wanted a Scandinavian guy why wasn't the whole business with like Sweden or Denmark or something? I know there aren't a huge number of established Finnish actors but they could have tried to get one or have the Scandinavian guy learn an accent, he is supposed to be an actor after all. Otherwise, great episode, but as a Finn, very frustrating.
Gentleman Jack (2019)
There can never be enough series about women who love women
The L in the LGBT+ is severely underrepresented in media, at least compared to the G and B. We have several gay men and bi women in shows and movies, never enough though because it's not proportionate to the amount of LGBT people there are. Still, even in the little space we have demanded to represented in on tv, it is mostly about relationships between two men or a woman that has men AND women as partners. I am so happy to have a well-made, interesting quality tv show with a lesbian as the main character. The only reason I didn't give full 10 stars is because it is hard to root for a Tory, someone who, already in the first episode so I don't consider this a spoiler, goes around collecting rent from poor, working people and plans to mine and/or sell coal. I know, it's historically accurate and if she wasn't rich and highborn she wouldn't have been able to be like she was, but still, it just feels wrong.
The X Files: Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster (2016)
Brilliant
This episode was absolutely brilliant. The werewolf patient the psychiatrist mentioned must be the same guys as the killer. Thinks he's a werewolf and kills people during full moon by biting their throats. The werelizard, turned by the werewolf that is actually a normal human, is brilliant and hilarious. A few days of human life and he is a suicidal alcohol. This episode was very meta and super entertaining. Great episode.
The X Files: El Mundo Gira (1997)
This episode portrays Latinos as fundamentally different
I found it extremely distracting that every single Mexican knew that he was the Chupacabra and was afraid of him. Like, surely not every single Mexican had heard the rumors about him that quickly or was from his little town? In this episode, everyone even looking Latino just knew he was the Chupacabra somehow! This would suggest some kind of fundamental physical difference between Whites and Latinos, which is really problematic. I know, it was the 90's, but watching this in the 2020's it is quite glaringly racist.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: All the Way (2001)
The old guy
My heart breaks for the old guy. The 'something special' was actually homemade Halloween dessert and he was just so glad not to be alone like probably all other days. Probably never had children of his own. A nice way to subvert expectations though, with the old guy in the beginning vs. The young guys in the end.
The Night Of: The Call of the Wild (2016)
I'm very happy with this episode
I really loved the subplot with the cat. It mirrored Mr. Stones having hope, losing it and then finding it again. In the end the cat showed that he still has faith. Also I have two cats and I was really glad that the cat didn't die <3.
It's a Sin (2021)
Amazing but heartbreaking
9/10 only because I watched it all in one night and now I am dehydrated from crying so much. I have a headache. Thought this would be a bit ligther, but it got dark so quickly. This is great if you wanna cry. If you want to watch something LGBT but need your heart intact today, try Pose or Euphoria.
You (2018)
Perfect casting
Penn Badgley playing the weird, socially incompetent boy from Brooklyn that likes literature? This is Who Dan Humphrey would have become with the same upbringing. Also LOL at Gossip Girl not being included on his IMDb page's 'Known For' top 4, like (major GG spoiler) he literally was Gossip Girl. An amazing actor, perfect for this role because he has this whole 'am I a psychotic serial killer or just an introvert? You never know' vibe down very naturally.
Also I have been obsessed with Victoria Pedretti since The Haunting of Hill House, she's amazing. Everyone else is also perfectly cast, don't think this would have worked with another cast, definitely not with a different lead.
Mulan (2020)
Beautiful, different, alright
Every frame was beautiful. It was free for me (on Disney+), I don't know if that's still regional as I'm in the EU? I think it was at least up to par with the other live action remakes. There was an extra character that had a very predictable storyline, and of course some elements were missing from the original, so yeah it wasn't a scene by scene remake. It was still a decent movie. So if you have Disney+ and are curious, I recommend watching it for free, maybe not in other cases.
WandaVision (2021)
It keeps on giving
It keeps building up, the first few a bit more boring episodes were necessary to establish the premise of the show. Every episode surprises, adding a bit more each week! The twists and turns. This is how you make a unique television series in 2021.
