The Black Phone (2021)
6.5 if giving half of a point was possible
Came down to the kids acting. This would have been a 7. The story was fun, but the child acting needed some improvements. The talent is there, just slipped in and out a lot.
427 more to go, but the story was decent. I wonder if there are earlier Easter eggs that majority of people missed. Would love more of a prequel side of things. Love that the background was left out. But of course now keeps me more interested.
What else can I say about this movie other than I had a lot of high hops for this. Due to the ensemble of the cast or maybe just a single actor, Ethan hawke. Love his work and the variety of movie he signs up to do.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
CGI Detail Amazing
The details in the CGI is phenomenal. The water was phenomenal and appeared close to real.
The story lacks depth in my opinion. Half of the movie is exposition and rushes through the quest of finding the missing dragon gems. The voice acting of Raya is difficult to work through. Lacks emotion and delivery.
The side characters provided more of an emotional connection than Raya and the last dragon. The direction to take the dragon in was unique, and was most likely done with the intention to focus marketing towards young girls.
Character development was lacking and predictable. Unfortunate that Asian centered movie was lacking a strong in presence main character.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Better Than Expected
This was better than I was anticipating. If Chadwick Boseman was in this I think it would have been the better of the 2 movies. Namor was the best part. Loved his ruthlessness and political prowess. Shurri always holds well.
The "scientist" was difficult for me. Throwing technical jargon around with zero purpose or context just so the character "sounds smart". Everyone kept calling NaYmore, drove me a bit nuts.
For me marvel movies are becoming stale. So movies I used to see opening day in theaters I now wait for streaming. Hopefully marvel can fix that going forward.
And did anyone catch the callback to the first X-men movie?
So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993)
Slam Poetry and other Easter Eggs
I can't tell if Mike Meyers is taking himself seriously or not in this film. I also never realized that the slam poetry from 21 Jump Street (2012) was very similar to the poetry scenes from this movie. They also drop The Pentaverate in this film as well.
Morbius (2022)
Underrated or Maybe I'm Biased
This movie is being underrated. Don't get me wrong there are numerous things that are out of whack...Letos acting, and dialogue. The action sequences are awesome. The CGI I thought was good. Maybe I'm biased to spider-man and it's universe. But this movie is DEF not as bad as reviews have been.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
+1 for Originnality
First gave a 7, then changed to an 8 for such an original approach to a Marvel Film.....Noticing a trend with "Large Godzilla like Monsters", not my favorite but okay....
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Modern Day Sitcom
This feels like a modern day sitcom. Imagine an action packed Full House with full effects and no laugh track...that's how I feel when I watch this...
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Like father like daughter
The young version of Leia is just as bad as young Anakin.. Would like more light saber duels. Concept is good and makes me more interested in how the Jedi defeated the sith and more about Qui-gon Jin.
Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much (2017)
Slow
The scandal isnt even mentioned until the last 10 minutes of the 1hr 30min movie. It was pretty much just Ted reliving his glory days and 15 sec of fame.
The Batman (2022)
Awesome movie...one complaint
Loved the movie. Pacing was great for 3 hour movie. Villain was awesome.... The only issue I had with this movie was how slow Batman walked out of the shadows.
Servant (2019)
TOO much development
The first season was fun and suspenseful, but there was NOT enough of a payout. The pacing of this "tv show" is too slow.
As usual too focused on setting up the "big reveal" that feels will NEVER come.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Sympathetic Villain Overused
Overall an entertaining move. It's good. The super hero formula may just be starting to lose its interest in me. I am just over movies trying to get me to feel bad for the villain.
Year One (2009)
Modern attempt at "History of the world"
Enjoyable and modern attempt to make a classic of history of the world. Or even life of Brian. Satire is unfortunately a dying art form due to lack of understanding and political correctness.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
One hit wonder
This felt like a sequel to a movie that DID NOT need a sequel, nor was one originally planned for. It wasn't horrible. Just bleh
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
What you would expect from a sequel.
Had all the same jokes but the surprise was taken away. The intros were the highlight for me for this movie.
Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)
They Tried
What "The Wiz" is to the "Wizard of Oz", this is the same for the "Vampires vs. The Bronx" is to "The Lost Boys".
Project Power (2020)
First Half: 7...Second Half: 5
Great concept...Movie was longer than it needed to be...Never felt a climax....Most likely bc it felt that every fight, win or lose, ended the moment it started....it was fun and I enjoyed it.
Hate Thy Neighbour (2016)
Walking Through Minefields
Jamali does wonders navigating through laser beams as he meets the extremist groups. His stand up and personality don't match. During his stand up he uses this "high pitched" voice. But out during the day his voice never hits that high pitch again. Saw all of one season. Wish he spoke out the same amount for each extremist group or not at all.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Kyle Ren is main character not Rey
Kyle Rens story is similar to the theory that agent smith from the matrix is actually "The One" and not Neo. This felt the same the Kylo Ren was the main character/protagonist not Rey. This movie was better. It does not fit with the prequels of this trilogy. But if you consider that Kyle Ren is the true protagonist the movie has a better charter arc and development and the movie and story flow better. This movie felt like it should have been the second movie in this series
Dracula (2020)
Should be viewed as 3 stand alone movies
Everyone the reviews has already said it. Just remove episode 3 and it's a great fresh take on Dracula.
Booksmart (2019)
Genre Confused
This movie was enjoyable. But it seemed to be confused with what it wanted to be. It came across more of a Rom-Com and not a comedy. Predictable, and lacked comedic delivery. The trailer was better than the movie. I can see why it did not generate a lot of buzz. This has nothing to do with women being funny.
One Punch Man: Wanpanman (2015)
Amazing Anime Satire
This is an amazing satire of typical Japanese anime of: "The antagonist is overpowered, beats up all of the protagonists friend and allies. Then the protagonist comes in for the final fight and after 3-4 episodes the antagonist always wins". Season two is amazing, they have successfully made a great sympathetic villain which seems to be the MOST popular arch type nowadays. Artwork is phenomenal using it to accentuate the dry humor throughout the entire show
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)
More of an Origin Story
The overall movie seemed as if it was primarily meant for 7-10 year olds with the campy acting and dialogue. Even tho it felt like it was being directed towards 90's kids. It's a fun movie, would have like to see a more experienced character and less of an origin story.
Venom (2018)
Critics have agenda
Critics and movie goers seem to be on completely different. This movie is fun and enjoyable like an old Jean Claude Van Damme. Not the best story but fun to watch. Tom Hardy is a clear stand out performance
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Sometimes Sequals aren't needed
This movie faces the same problem all sequels do, they are compared and expected to be as good or better than the original, but rarely are. The joy and magic felt forced and artificial. It's hard to compete against Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, which will keep any sequel/remake in their shadow.
