Outside the Wire (2021)
Another movie from the mind of a 12 year old...
Like the title says. Imagine being 12 and thinking about what makes a cool movie. This is that movie. Unfortunately it is only cool for a 12 year old mind...
Also why did no one check the writers on their math. The protagonists reportedly has 56.000 hours of flight experience. That is over 15 years of 10 hours per day every day. Did the protagonist start when he was 6 years old?
Altered Carbon: Phantom Lady (2020)
Altered in the worst possible way.
This is what happens when you take a season that was guided by a great book, had a wonderful cast with very capable actors and an interesting story, then take away the guiding hand of the book, take away the story and replace all but a few of the actors with subpar ones.
Season 1 was great. Season 2 is average at best.
Avenue 5 (2020)
Ugh.
The science is bad, but ok I'll give them that since it's a comedy show.
The comedy part is even worse.
Ad Astra (2019)
What was the point of this movie?
I do not think I have ever seen a movie do so little with so much. The cast and budget was obviously there, but it is severely lacking any kind of writing talent. The movie is horribly slow and uninteresting. It tries to be deep but falls flat on its face. It tries to do science but it is obvious that no one with a higher than high school education advised them on it.
I enjoyed about 1 minute of the entire two hour long movie. The rest was painfully dull.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Great but short.
Went in to this not having any real expectations (from the way Star Wars has been doing in the past years), but I have to say I was hooked from the first minute to the last. Unfortunately the episodes are very much on the short side, but on the other hand I never got the feeling that it was rushed in any part, which considering the length of the episodes and all that is going on is a feat on itself.
I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the show. If the movies had the feel of this show, they would be a huge hit with the Star Wars fans (at least the ones that are out of puberty), unfortunately this show is all we have for the time being. I want more and I want it as soon as possible.
Pandora (2019)
Excitement turns in to disgust
I always get excited when i come across a new sci fi show, since i adore a good sci fi and every new show is a chance for me to get what i so yearn for.
So i started watching the first episode and right off the bat I was hit by the horribly inappropriate and amateurish music. Did someone not tell whoever was in charge of music that they're not making a disney cartoon? But ok, while music is a very important part for immersion, I'll continue and give the show a chance.
Seconds later I'm hit with a double punch combination of bad acting and horrible writing. At this point I am all but decided that this isn't the show for me but i still gave it an extra 15 minutes just to be sure. Needless to say those 15 minues were painful and not only did the quality not improve from the initial impressions, it even went downhill.
Please don't waste a minute, let alone 15 on this. Instead rewatch one of the classic sci fi shows for the 10th+ time and enjoy yourselves.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Low expectations really payed off.
Maybe if the previous episodes did not lower my expectations to pretty much zero I would be one of the angry crowd, but after finishing this last episode I find myself strangely satisfied.
I liked how Dany went in to full tyrant mode being absolutely sure she did the right thing and doing her little warmonger speech. I like that Jon was eventually the one who ended her tyranny and not Arya.
I LOVED that the dragon burned the Iron Throne when he found Dany dead. Some people are floating the idea that it was just burning in a random direction, but they forget that dragons are very intelligent (a fact that was stated several times) and it is not too much of a stretch to think that the dragon knew the throne was a symbol that made Dany go mad because she coveted it beyond all reason. The dragon was loyal to her but it knew that what they did to the city was wrong. I feel that Jon and Drogon was kindred spirits in the end. They both loved Dany, but they both accepted that such an end was inevitable.
I enjoyed or at least could tolerate the endings for most of the named characters and while some were not perfect, none of them were horribly out of character. Ghost finally got a "good boy" pat (better late than never I guess). Bran becoming king is a bit silly, but thinking about it, i don't really have a much better alternative in mind...I just hope he does not end up staying in his room playing Bird Simulator 2000 video games for days on end. Tyrion is much better as an adviser than he would be a ruler and Jon is not king material and will be happier in the north. I liked the new council (Bronn being the master of coins was a bit ironic, but sort of in a good way). There were some attempts at humor which were a tad cringe worthy, but not too bad in general. The dragon and Arya going their separate ways in to the unknown leaves just a bit of mystery but not enough to be an annoying cliffhanger...
All in all the road to the last episode was rocky and common sense/good writing were far too frequently brutally victimized, but this last episode was...fine.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
So apparently dragons are powerful again.
We instantly lose a dragon to 3 scorpions/ballistas last episode, now apparently hundreds of them cant even put a dent in to one...suuure.
Great acting, good visuals and stunts, abhorrent writing. This would sum up this entire season.
I was still holding out to maybe be surprised by the writers but NOPE. They ruined pretty much everything to get to this point in the season only to completely mess it up yet again.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
Who can i call to adopt Ghost and show him what a loving home looks like?
Wonderful acting: 10/10
Horrible writing decisions (again): 1/10
Totally ruining Dany: 1/10
Minimizing the impact/instantly forgetting about the Night King threat: 1/10
Showing no emotion when saying farewell to Ghost (was considering making this go in to negative): 0/10
Average: 2.6 (rounding down for all the wrongs they did to Ghost)
At this point all my hype (and there was a lot of hype on my part) turned in to bitter disappointment. The whole season feels rushed and packed with abhorrent writing, which is odd because a) why do you need to rush one of the (if not the) most successful shows in TV history and b) how do you not have anyone in the writing room go "wait a minute...that makes no fkn sense" every 5 minutes.
It's still entertaining as an average TV show you randomly find when switching channels, but Game of Thrones this is not.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
I expected much more.
Don't get me wrong, the episode was entertaining and at certain points they did masterfully play with my feelings, BUT...
There are so many bad story decisions and so many bad strategic/tactical decisions, that i just can't bring myself to approve of this episode. If it were any other show i might even give it a 7 or an 8, but i know what they are capable of and as such like a teacher with a student that is underachieving despite his great potential, i am greatly disappointed.
From the throwing away of the entire Dothraki army without showing us at least some damage done on their part, to the siege engines being used for 1 or 2 shots then completely abandoned, to the ditch meant to help them retreat doing the exact opposite. And then we move to technical issues with the darkness of the episode making a good third of it almost unwatchable. And back to story again with most of the main characters seemingly having had immunity spells cast on them...Sam literally took a little nap on top of a bed of murderous undead and apparently came away mostly unscathed while about the same number of them almost killed one of the dragons. No Jon vs Night King smackdown was also a huge disappointment. I don't mind Arya striking the final blow, but we could have at least seen some more attempts to stop the NK other than a limpy chase and teleporting sneak attack. And what the fk Bran was doing the entire time playing around with his birds is beyond me.
Stargate Origins (2018)
Tried to judge it on its merits alone.
First off I am a huge Stargate fan. It was by far my favorite show when i was a kid. That being said, I know us fans are sometimes a bit too brutal when judging a series that is based on one of our all time favorites. That is why i tried to judge this by its merits alone and not compare it too much to the original.
What is there to say about Stargate Origins? It appears its creators intended it to be a joke. Surely no one making this actually took it seriously? Alas even as a parody of the original Stargate it falls flat on its face. The acting is horrible and the writing is even worse (perhaps the actors could do a better job if they had something better to work with). The fight sequence...oh my god the fight sequence...It was truly cringe worthy. The only good thing i could possibly have to say about this show is that it is so bad it could almost be considered entertaining...ALMOST. Oh and the guy from SG: Atlantis was sort of ok.
