The Singapore Grip (2020)
Starts woodenly, but develops well..
I was put off initially by the rating (5+) and also the reviews posted; however I preserved and found it fascinating. I should declare an interest, in that I live in Thailand and have spent a lot of time in Malaya where this was filmed. Having said that, it's still good television for those who like period drama, well acted. Better than much of the rubbish on TV these days...
Deadwater Fell (2020)
Deadwater From The Neck Up
David Tennant is a guaranteed draw, particularly after Broadchurch, and to see Ms Jumbo descend through the Olympian clouds of woke and virtue signaling that separate us mere mortals from The Good Fight and present a reasonable portrayal of a Scottish kindergarten teacher this side of the pond was a veritable treat, but...the plot was so ponderous, the acting so wooden - particularly Tennant, who knows better - that any decent director would've wrapped this up in a 90 minute one-off with some success. Too long, too bleak, too many unwanted scenes (the car crash? What did that achieve?) and a not so believable plot. Could do better.
Contraband (2012)
DESERVES A HIGHER RATING
For a film with such a variety of plots, nuances, twists - it deserves much more than a 6 - I give at least an eight, and not just because I'm a MW fan. This movie is one of those rarest of genres - a plot fest that drags you back every two years or so for a revisit. No particular taste is involved: it happens (for me) with American Wedding, Hangover II, Italian Job and Gone in 60. Weird, eh? But fun...
Manifest: Dead Reckoning (2018)
DID NO ONE SEE THE CRUCIAL TWIST?
Maybe I'm off piste here, but I thought I saw a good girl go bad...doesn't anyone else think the shot where the blonde academic woman who wrote the theory of this whole 'brain control' thing gets in the back of the truck with the patients and says "See you" or some such, is a bit weird? I think she's become bad/always was, and has kidnapped them... Or not, as the case may be.
