The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)
Fun, interesting, and joyful
Fun and interesting re-imagining of DC. Quite enjoyable. Don't get hung up on the fact it's not a traditional, straightforward rendering of the book.
Hillary (2020)
Well balanced and informative
Neither a love letter nor a negative diatribe. Interesting review of her life history with (for me at least) lots of new stuff, and lots more context for many of the big issues and debates that have swirled around her.
Booksmart (2019)
Surprisingly Great Movie
Lots of low ratings here, but I think many people are missing the movie ... it is very smart and very funny ... so much tongue in cheek and vulnerable coming-of-age and real life humor and conversation that so effectively reflects the feelings and thinking of the people. It takes risks ... not all of them work out, but I give it tons of respect for aiming high. (Yeah, I said high!) As I watched, I avoided questioning, analyzing and judging ... instead, I rolled with it, and the intelligence and humor flowed.
The Public (2018)
Great movie ...
Adult and thoughtful ... serious consideration of important, current issues. Well done!
Mental (2012)
Wow
A real surprise ... actually, several of them! Not for everyone, and it seems a bit longer than it needed to be, but I loved it. WOW!
The actors seemed like they were having a great time ... lots of fun.
Some of the reviews I read seemed like they're applying a "standard movie" template and framework to what turns out to be more fun, more up and down, more loopy -- and yet more thoughtful and insightful -- than their standard template can accommodate.
In fact, these reviews turn out to be the very same conformity (of thought, style, expectation, fear) that the movie very directly takes aim at.
To Hogan, Collette, and the others: Very well done!
